Liverpool’s director of football strategy Damien Comolli watched the 17-year-old score against Oldham last night in the Saints' 6-0 drubbing at Boundary Park - but was joined in the stands by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Well of course they all want him - he's brilliant for his age. No quotes "suprise, surprise". Cheap and lazy journalism. Fergie at Oldham had nothing od course to do with the game in 2 1/2 weeks time and the fact we were playing 5 minutes from his house!! The difference between now and Bale and Walcott is simply two things.....money and club potential. We have masses of both so although we are not playing at the highest level right now we can compete far more evenly financially! I would mind if he went but it wouldnt worry me because unlike previously Im sure we would only let AOC or anyone else go if they really wanted too and not for the money. And more importantly the money would go straight back into the team anyway. Luckily we really are starting to show the football world what potential and what NC wants us to achieve is a seriously serious work in progress. Times have changed for us....

Smiley Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Dalglish joins race for "new Walcott" By David Maddock Liverpool will rival Arsenal for £10million Southampton wonderkid Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The exciting 17-year-old has been dubbed the new Theo Walcott, another former Saint, and is already being tipped as an England star of the future. Arsenal - along with Everton and Fulham - have had the teenager on their radar for months, even though Saints boss Nigel Adkins has insisted he’s not for sale. Now Liverpool have joined the race, with their new owners ready to stump up the cash in an attempt to make their backing for caretaker manager Kenny Dalglish clear. Reds director of football strategy Damien Comolli has identified the brilliant young forward as the perfect target under his club’s new philosophy of finding raw talent and moulding it. However, they will have to stump up a huge fee to beat Arsenal to Oxlade-Chamberlain, the son of former Stoke, Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth and England winger Mark Chamberlain. The winger - who scored in last night's victory over Oldham - has been at Southampton since the age of seven, and after snatching seven goals in just 17 starts, he is rated by club staff as possessing greater potential than Walcott had at the same age. Walcott moved from Southampton to Arsenal on his 17th birthday, after just 21 senior appearances. Mirror
CB Saint Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 He will be gone by the summer. I don't want him to but when the big clubs come knocking enmasse then the temptation will be too great too resist. After all he has probably dreamt of playing for Man U / Arsenal etc in Champions League as a kid, who wouldn't follow their dreams when the opportunity presented itself - it may never happen again. As for benchwarming, sure he won't feature immediately, but it hasn't hurt Walcott's career at all, has it. Love him to stay, but resigned to him leaving.
beatlesaint Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 it hasn't hurt Walcott's career at all, has it.. Really ? Still not a first name on the team sheet at Arsenal is he ? Not sure he has progressed as well as he might had he stayed, or gone out on loan, for a season or two.
suewhistle Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/12/alex-oxlade-chamberlain-liverpool-transfer-bid In today's Guardian...
Saint_Rick Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Why sell for £10 million. Surely AOC is a better prospect than Walcott, even perhaps Bale. £15 million minimum
Thedelldays Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Really ? Still not a first name on the team sheet at Arsenal is he ? Not sure he has progressed as well as he might had he stayed, or gone out on loan, for a season or two. Lol He is one of arsenals main players V Persie is not even the first name and he played in the world cup final Fabregas and nasri.. Two really exceptional players are really the only two offensive players that seem to get picked no matter what..
Saint_Ash Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_6658739,00.html Man U are in for him now according to SSN, just because he went and watched the game!
Liquidshokk Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 why havent we just put it out there that he's not for sale?? surely a player has to be on offer to be sold? What makes all these prem clubs think they can just come in and name a price and we will let him go?? I really hope Cortese doesnt see £ signs and take the money....

Mirror I know it's all bluster and speculation anyway, but the bit in bold makes me a little bit cross. I wouldn't really put him in this bracket, raw talent and moulding?? Surely someone like Kenwyne Jones more fits that category - i.e. discovered when older and turned in to a decent footballer? Ah well, pretty sure he'll be here next season, well, hope so anyway - fed up with losing decent young players so early in recent years, however, I guess it's an indication of where we are now in the footballing ladder. Like it or not, we're still 3rd div currently.
trousers Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Cortese kept his word regarding Lallana. I see no reason why he shouldn't do the same with Chamberlain.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/southampton/9269293.stm Cortese added "he could not see any players leaving in January", including midfielders Adam Lallana, who has been linked with Birmingham, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is being trailed by Arsenal. "I can't see a possibility we would sell Adam in January," said Cortese, "and Alex is not going to go anywhere - we're talking about a very young player in the first year of a professional contract. "We'll have to cope with the rumours and we have to help the kid cope with the rumours. He's very well looked after and I don't think he'd wish to be anywhere else than here. "We're very proud to see the progress he's made in such a short period [but] there's still a lot for him to learn, and he's aware of that. We've got a great prospect for the future, but not the transfer market.
Saint Charlie Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 I think Cortese has done enough to be trusted.
Saints foreva Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 If a club offers £10m we're not going to reject it.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 To be honest I'm not too worried either way. He's a great player and very valuable to the team at this level, so I'd love it if we could keep him and he could progress up the leagues with us. However should he want to leave we know NC will get the best possible price for him and I'm confident that the money -unlike under previous regimes- will be invested back into the club, through both new players and development of the facilities.

angelman Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 If a club offers £10m we're not going to reject it. As Saint-Rik says, why not go for £15m? If (and I know papers and their speculation can be somewhat different from reality) all these clubs are preparing a £10m bid, then it must be worth our while letting the big boys outbid each other.

Alain Perrin Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 My opinion is that as far as Cortese is concerned, the club will only sell if a) the money is silly or b) the player really wants to go. £10million is a lot of money, but is it silly? I'd argue no unless all up front + sell on + loanback, then maybe. If it is (b) then we really have no option and need to get best price. I just hope that Alex realises he can be a legend at Southampton and the big contracts will be even bigger then. What we do in life echoes in eternity etc. (and greatness doesn't include sitting on the bench at Arsenal or Liverpool when you could restoring Saints to the Premiership).
Ken Tone Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/paulfletcher/2011/01/dale_jennings_-_the_football_l.html#280174 So based on that, never mind not selling Chambo, why haven't we made an offer for Dale Jennings?!
Greenridge Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Considering Cortese's statement regarding AOC I think the most likely outcome, if there is any movement at all, would be a buy and loanback arrangement. £10M is a lot, even for us in our relatively financially stable position.
Chez Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Having watched the game on Sunday I honestly think that Alex would go straight into that Liverpool side. If Johnson is out, they have absolutely nothing down their right hand side attacking wise. Kuyt works hard enough, but has no pace or trick and supplies nothing to Torres. If Dalgleish thinks the same then they would not just be buying a prospect for £10m, which is a huge investment, they would be buying for now - making the £10m less scary. Hope I'm wrong.
Cricketphilly Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Figures like 10 mill are bandied about, but how much do we actually end up with. Agents fee, VAT at 20% (applicable?) Signing on fee, etc Anyone actually know?

The problem from Liverpools perspective is that they are not wholly awash with cash, and the pressure is on to invest in already proven players to a) galvanise the moribund mood in the club and b) to supplement the relatively sparse quality they have. I'm really not sure if they can afford use £10 million or whatever on a youngster in his first year - And then take time to "mould him" ! They need big names NOW !
JackanorySFC Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Why sell for £10 million. Surely AOC is a better prospect than Walcott, even perhaps Bale. £15 million minimum He's not as good a prospect as Walcott was - oh what short memories we have! Theo was England U21's youngest ever player and goalscorer by AOC's age, (he had also set the same record at England U18 and 19 level - breaking Rooney's records). He came in the top 3 of BBC young Sports personality of the year due to being our youngest ever reserve player (a few weeks after his 15th birthday) and our youngest ever 1st team player when he scored again Leeds at Elland Road. He also scored in our next 2 games, at home against Stoke and someone else who I can't remember. Every big Club in Europe was aware of Theo from 14 years old (the age he signed his 1st Nike contract). AOC is superb, don't get me wrong - but a bit of perpective eh?
Matthew Le God Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 He came in the top 3 of BBC young Sports personality of the year a bit of perpective eh? That is an award voted for by people that wouldn't have seen Walcott play. A bit of perspective?
Saint Charlie Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Maxi Rodriguez plays on the right, but hasn't been playing there for Liverpool. He is awful. Shocking in fact.
JackanorySFC Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 That is an award voted for by people that wouldn't have seen Walcott play. A bit of perspective? So at the time you didn't think he deserved to win it? How could they not have seen him play, he'd played over 20 games for us by then in the Championship and torn strips out of pretty much every full back he played against? Do you think they just ignored every game and goal and voted for him for a laugh?
david in sweden Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 i have just spoken to a mate of Mark Chamberlains - he does nt think he will go and he parents know he is better off at SFC but said that some of money being offered to AOC is ridiculous so you never know ...and for once we don't have to think about the money, either. £10 million sounds a lot, which of course it is, but in retrospect with a deal like, 5 mill up front and the rest later we only end up getting screwed..IMHO .10 mill. isn't enough for a future England player, which he may well become, and is chicken feed to clubs who readily pay 15-20 mill.for foreign imports who rarely make the grade in the Prem. To the "big clubs " I say, put your money where your mouth is, otherwise put up ..or shut up. If we (as NC says) will become a Prem.club again. it's about time we started thinking like one... as long as Alex and his parents are OK with the situation, he should stay. More performances like these recent will only go to increase his potential as a Saints player , or an even bigger money sell in the future.
Window Cleaner Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 I see Ox already has his Arsenal boots then
saintwarwick Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 So at the time you didn't think he deserved to win it? How could they not have seen him play, he'd played over 20 games for us by then in the Championship and torn strips out of pretty much every full back he played against? Do you think they just ignored every game and goal and voted for him for a laugh? People got to hear and know about Walcott whilst we were still in the premiership so would of been on more peoples radar, AOC has only known division 3 football and not many people will have seen or heard about him but it says a lot about the calibre of AOC when the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal are after or watching him. Whilst it's hard to compare two players AOC is as good as Theo was all those years ago and AOC's scoring rate is higher than Theo's was.
saintjay77 Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 I don't actually think it matters what is offered. It comes down to cortese and what his vision for the club is. If he see's us in a barcalona type model then the key to our success will be to develop world class players and keep them at the club. I'm not comparing oxo with messi but where would barcalona be had they sold messi the first time someone sniffed about with a wedge of cash? The plan is to create players that make our club great. Not create players for other clubs to win trophies with. Cortese needs to convince these players that this is achievable and great things will happen for the players by sticking with us. If he can do that then the £10 million offers can do one. I'm starting to think there is enough about cortese and co to believe that despite some setbacks, we will reach the levels cortese and Markus had previously discussed. The likes of oxo and lallana will want to get to the big time like any other player. If they think the fastest route is with us then they will stick about.
Saint Charlie Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 (edited) The key to this for me is to make sure that whatever deal gets done it is a very, very good one for us. We didn't make the most of the Walcott and Bale deals so should learn, and I am sure if (when) we do sell AOC then Cortese will drive a good deal for us. £10m up front, 5m in installments, 25% sell on, first refusal on loan players from that team for the next two seasons and AOC on loan next season. Otherwise no deal, we are in the strong position, we don't need the money and he has 2 years left on his contract. If anyone says he isn't worth that much then why are Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea etc all watching him. Not many FL players attract that amount of attention. If they won't do a good deal then we can gladly keep him. Edited 12 January, 2011 by Saint Charlie

I'm not comparing oxo with messi but where would barcalona be had they sold messi the first time someone sniffed about with a wedge of cash? I think this works in the case of Messi - because Barcelona are one of the biggest clubs in the world and generally arent a feeder club to anyone. Just like Man Utd arent (although Ronaldo shows everyone has their price)
MadDogMatt Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 What price future potential? I remember when some thought £3m was a good price for Shearer! Its all been said above but AOC being happy to stay and Nicola turning down all bids is a massive statement of intent. I was told shortly after Markus passed away from someone very ITK that we are still a very lucky club, we will never know the size of the funding legacy and the family could go cold on Saints but the impression I got was the funding is their for a return to the premier league and the the aspiration was the champions league. This is a test of that resolve for the club but also the player, if his head gets turned he will go and I suspect Saints wont stand in the way.

aintforever Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 I wouldn't accept less than £10mill, the potential there is obvious.
saintjay77 Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 I think this works in the case of Messi - because Barcelona are one of the biggest clubs in the world and generally arent a feeder club to anyone. Just like Man Utd arent (although Ronaldo shows everyone has their price) True which is why I wasnt trying to compare Oxo to Messi. But the idea is there all the same. If Oxo had been found by Barcalona and developed in a setup that is further ahead of our setup then he would still get to the top level producing top form at the same rate as we are aiming for. Barca are at a stage where they are at the top and they can bring through new tallent over 2 or 3 seasons while they sit high up the food chain. We want to bring the tallent through over 2 or 3 seasons while we climb the football food chain in the same period. As long as we are moving up that food chain then we have a possability of competing against the big clubs to keep the tallented youngsters. If at any point we look like we are a club on hold however, the lure of the big clubs will make our decissions for us IMO. As much as the club want to do things in its own way, I agree with you in that every player has a price on his head. But the position we are in I dont think big clubs are willing to go to that figure for some of our brightest tallents. I doubt Cortese will take much notice of £10 million for Oxo as if we get promoted then £10 mill next season will look more like a good deal for the buying club.
