Anyone got the link for when Cortese said Chamberlain wouldn't be leaving in January? Not doubting what was said, but I'm interested in hearing his exact quotes on the matter. Maybe he was going to stay when he made the statement, but OX has had a change of heart since then? At the end of the day if a player really wants to go, it's difficult to stand in their way.

Also just because the papers made a few factual errors in their story, doesn't mean it's completely made up. With a number of different places running with the story there's obviously something in it. Also it's not normal for a manager to come out and speak publicly about a player unless a deal is fairly close.

They are quite key facts though to be getting wrong! Saying a player is at a teams training ground when he is actually with his current team on a coach preparing for a match really makes you doubt the credibility of the whole rumour. Wenger makes no mention of any deal being even remotely close, the journalist justs puts to him an unsubstantiated claim that Chamberlain wants to go to Arsenal and Wenger pretty much says thats interesting we'll look into that as I like the player. That by no means Chamberlain is off soon.

It looks to me as if he's going. All over the papers, that journo on twitter and football agent 46 on twitter as well + others

Personally i dont think its necessarily a bad thing.

Lets be honest hes never going to stay with us for the long hall even if he doesnt go in this window, getting 10M if true is a huge amount imo for a league one player whos only just broken into the first team and could be a great move for us in league one and the championship IF a reasonable amount of that money is re-invested in players.

Posted
Not that fussed if he goes. 10 million is a hell of a lot of money and should see us buy promotion.

But if Saints were going to spend money in this window anyway the money from Chamberlain is irrelevant and he may as well stay.

If selling Chamberlin means we can spend an extra million or two on top quality players then it is worth it. I really don't think Chamberlin is as good as the hype. If we weren't known because of Theo and Bale it wouldn't have generated half as much hype as it has.

The longer it drags on the less chance of spending any revenue anyway - if we have anyone in mind we should do it now before (assuming the worst) Oxo goes. Any enquiries we make after that event would be met with silly figure quotes.

If he goes it means we are still a selling club and still training talent for the benefit of others and that's not good business. That's why I think NC will do everything possible to keep him

FWIW I was with a high profile Gooner fan on Saturday evening.

His take on it all was quite simple.

"IF, we've decided we want him, we WILL get him."

Wrong, so very wrong. It will mean he wants to go, as simple as that. Would you want a player to stay 3 years, who is unhappy. I'm in the MLG camp, I think he will be here at the end of this transfer window, but given the amount of 'I don't care/lets get rid of him' posts, I'd say that loyalty is not a two way street, and our fans do not deserve the right to see him develop into a top class player!

Posted

If it's all done and dusted, with acceptance from both managers, why are there no quotes from the player? Surely that's the simplest part? After all, there have been enough stories run. Why are they all rehashing each other's text? Is it really that hard to get some much-needed substance to go alongside the speculation?

This jouno thinks its all done - either genuinely from the family or has got it wrong. He puts it to Wenger that Ox-C wants to go to Arsenal and Arsene states thats good but not done a deal with club.

Still a lot up in the air.

Unless there is a clause in his contract I can still see Saints not entering discussions this window. How knows he was going to Stoke a couple of weeks ago!

The Echo & Nige

Nigel Adkins says he knows nothing of reports that Alex Chamberlain has agreed to join Arsenal.

Reports today stated that the 17-year-old winger had told the Gunners he would join them and all that was left to be sorted was the deal with Saints.

However, after the 2-0 defeat at Tranmere in which Chamberlain played, Adkins insisted he was not aware of any such deal being struck.

He said: “It’s news to me.

“It’s speculation – does that effect how we performed today because there has been intense speculation?

“There is transfer rumour mongering that goes on.

“Alex Chamberlain has played for us today, it’s as simple as that.”

Adkins also confirmed

It's as simple as that then.

From Sky transfer centre:

"Arsene Wenger has confirmed Arsenal's intention to sign Southampton wonderkid Alex Chamberlain while his dad Mark believes The Gunners are the ideal choice."

"Early on it seems the big news is surrounding Southampton starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Arsenal look set to conclude a £10million deal with Arsene Wenger confirming talks. His father Mark Chamberlain has also talked to Sky Sports News, stayed tuned as we will bring you that interview shortly."

I expect the deal-breaker is the loan-back agreement which Arsenal don't appear to want. I'm sure his Dad realises Alex is better off here for another season at least, but it wouldn't hurt if he could be signed on a premier league contract while doing it!

Just listened to the interview with his dad on SSN. Alot of nothing saying that arsenal would be a good club to develop him but was clear no bids or talks had even held place. Just media trying to talk up a move. Still think he will go though, no smoke without fire and all that.

Which is exactly why you should pay no attention to any of it.

If no talks have taken place, then his dad (and agent) is totally out of order giving this interview to Sky.

If he wants to go tell Arsenal £10million up front, or f*ck off. Man City would pay it.

Well if true this dilutes the concept of Saints keeping hold of the best youngsters coming out of the Academy to make up a Saints team of the future. Until the FA/FIFA assist the protection of clubs by mandating that home grown players MUST stay at their home club until they are at least 21, there will always be a terrible imbalance in football. I also think that clubs like Arsenal coming in and disrupting young players who are on long-term contracts should be made to pay ALL the money up-front. It would not only assist to quell the stupid fees commanded, but also make them think twice about plundering rather than building the infrastructure to find and develop their own talent. A real shame.

(My italics) So doesn't all this constitute illegal 'tapping up' of our player by Arsenal?

It would seem that he is going to Arsenal then !

In which case lets take the £10 million and in addition to signing Mackail-Smith, why not put a bid in for Dale Jennings too..

FFS, again I ask, WHO apart from the media has confirmed this? AW may be interested, but I sure we are interested in Ramsey, but we haven't made an approach!

It was obvious that AOC was off straight after the first interview from Adkins, where he failed to state that Alex was going to be staying.

So what if Cortese stated he wouldn't be sold in December? Cortese has no effective power to keep any want away player at the club. To do so would be completely counter-productive. The player would get narky, his performances would drop and his negativity would infect the other players. This is why Man Utd couldn't keep hold of Ronaldo, why Sunderland couldn't keep Bent and why dozens and dozens of clubs are forced to sell players their managers would prefer to retain.

Why is any of this a surprise to you?

IMO, if he wants to go so soon after signing a long contract then the club should stick him back in his age group for the remainder of his contract. 17 years old playing in the 1st team of a promotion chasing league 1 team is not half bad. It was good enough for him when he signed the contract so it should be good enough for him now.

Clubs spend fortunes on players and at the end of the day the player dictates to the club what he wants to do and its the club that often loses out.

I think if I were in charge of the club I might go with a compromise with the player. Find out how much he could be on with the big club and offer to renegotiate his contract at the end of the season. If we get promoted his contract gets re-written with the wages he would have been earning at a higher level. If we dont get promoted then he is free to talk to other clubs.

His development wont be hampered and either way he will secure his furture with cash at the end of the season.

Wenger should keep his trap shut in the press too. He complains that Barcelona do business in the press when they want fabregas but it seems he thinks its OK to do the same with Chambo.

Posted

Was going to highlight the same.

How can Wenger be "stepping up the pressure" when there have been "no talks yet between the clubs"....?

(unless the sending of a contract offer by taxi consititues "stepping up the pressure"...?)

Starting to sound like a carefully orchestrated series of moves between family and Arsenal to put pressure on Saints to sell (although handsup I havent seen Skysports interview).

Posted
If he forces a move then don't loan him back, just move on. I wouldn't want him in the team. Yes promotion is vital, but I'm truly fed up of the way football operates now. He's 17 ffs. Yet he can't wait 5 minutes to learn the game and actually prove something at the club that's developed him? It's just all about instant success, big money and the premiership. He knows he won't play much, if at all, there. It makes it impossible for clubs like us to progress. The money is no use, you can't sign 5m or 10m players in League 1 anyway. If quality is/was available, we'll sign it anyway if we can regardless of this money.

Still, the speculation hasn't helped us so maybe it'll be good to have him gone. Just hope we put everything into keeping Lallana long term because I'm fed up of new players every 5 minutes.

Hope Adkins drops Chamberlain for the Man Utd game, just to annoy the media only there to see Arsenal's new academy product.

Thats the thing though, if he goes and we dont take him back on loan, he could well be playing against our academy team in the youth cup or somthing. Bit of a step down in progress for a bit of extra wonga.

So far he seems to have ignored the speculation and got on with doing his job so hats off to him for that. My opinion would change if he refuses to play to get a move though.

I still think the more press there is the more Cortese will be happy to tell them to do one. If a club wants our players then they need to do business in private or they can shift off. Same goes the other way, if we want a player then that player can keep quiet until a deal has been done. There have a been a few players that have spoken up about supposed interest from us. Quick as a flash, naff all happened! Its in private or not at all seems to be NC's way and long may it continue.

Posted

Whatever, just get on with it and have done with all the distraction. Obvious from the outset of all this that he wanted to go to a "big club" .If it all comes to pass it's nobody's fault just that he (or his advisors) wanted to move upwards as soon as possible and get mega-bucks.

A selling club? Hardly. It means footballers still want money and big clubs, even if they're 17. Man Utd didn't want to sell Ronaldo, he wanted to go, he left. They aren't a selling club. All clubs lose players they'd rather keep.

It was rumoured that he had get out clauses in his contract and these just had to be triggered. I really don't see why there is so much insistence on Cortese's part in all this.If the player has 'if XX come calling for xx million you can't stop me" clauses then the chairman has no choice. These clauses are more and more common, especially for hot prospects signing with 3rd division clubs, no matter what their future ambition may be.

Things don't need to be said, that would be a problem because he wouldn't get his cut of any transfer fee. A player must never be seen to be seeking a transfer openly. That is considered as an official request and he loses his 5% cut.

And the beeb aren't saying he's sold, they're just got a quote from Wenger saying he's trying to sign him.

Good points, but i think we need to reamin realistic about the abilty tto hold onto the developing players - we are still in L1 and until we are in a position to offer Prem football, and not just 'survival and lower table mediocrity' we will find that players, agents and family will tend to encourage the best kids to be off. Its frustrating and annoying, but if the revenue funds further devlopment both of the first team and academy, it will help us realise the ambition of re establishing us in the prem and then as talent comes through providing an environment in which these players can achieve success - the greedy ones will always be off to clubs that offer stupid money, but hopefully the culture and financial situation will allow us to hold onto a core of homegrown that will drive the success.

We have to be realistic, as its no different from us poaching the like sof Leon Best or Magoldrick from lower league clubs when we were a prem club - although they were not of the caliber of Bale, Walcott, or Chamberlain, the principle is the same.

These clubs paying everything up front is key though - if they go it must be on our terms and we should not be bullied into accepting a lesser deal.
