badgerx16 Posted 7 January, 2011 Share Posted 7 January, 2011 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12132341 Conservative MP Bernard Jenkin, chair of the committee, said: "The whole process was rushed and poorly handled and should have been thought through a lot more". Too much dogma to satisfy the Daily Heil, too little thought and application.
Verbal Posted 7 January, 2011 Share Posted 7 January, 2011 No money saved - in fact MORE will be spent. And accountability has not been improved. Brilliant! Just the kind of useless, bumbling incompetence we need right now.
Joensuu Posted 7 January, 2011 Share Posted 7 January, 2011 Think the SIA being scrapped is a perfect example. The SIA is a self-funding quango, so scapping it won't save the government a penny. Without the SIA we won't have a licencing body for doormen or security guards. I understand politicians wanting to cut quangos to save money - but cutting one which is useful, and doesn't save them any money is crazy. I wish politics would stop pandering to the gutter press. Saintandy666 Posted 7 January, 2011 Share Posted 7 January, 2011 I did wonder in all honesty. They rushed through this all extremely quickly with a hell of a lot of rhetoric about how all quangos are awful and evil and waste money. They should have actually considered this a bit more. dune Posted 7 January, 2011 Share Posted 7 January, 2011 I wish politics would stop pandering to the gutter press. I agree. 13 years of pandering to the Guardian brought this country to it's knees. The govt. need to start listening to what the British people want and start pandering to the rational views of the Daily Express and the Daily Mail. trousers Posted 7 January, 2011 Share Posted 7 January, 2011 (edited) Shouldn't we be praising the fact that we now have much more open politics whereby the coalition have set up review panels and committees for various policy decisions headed by people from across the political spectrum and don't try and put a spin on the verdict? (yes, I know this particular committee was established by the coalition per se but there have been plenty of government commisioned policy review panels headed by politicians from all parties) Unless people are yearning for the days where the Blair/Mandleson/Campbell sanctum would micro-control policy creation and reviews. Jenkin's committee has one view, the government has another. Wow, there's a revelation. Edited 7 January, 2011 by trousers

Jenkin's committee has one view, the government has another. Wow, there's a revelation. It's not about 'views' though, is it? When the Head of the Civil Service is challenged to say how much as been saved by the bonfire, and he doesn't know, even after going away to think about it and ask all the other civil servants, then it's beyond 'different views'. It's a disaster - as the leading coalition govt MP was the first to say. You can't have it both ways - demand the bonfire on money-saving grounds and then not be concerned that no money can be found to have been saved. trousers Posted 7 January, 2011 Share Posted 7 January, 2011 Just because the execution was "botched" doesn't make it a bad idea per se. If consolidating / streamlining / rationalising various quangos saves a few bob or billions of pounds then it's worthwhile I'd have thought. If the exercise ends up costing more than it saves I'd be the first one to declare it as a waste of time. I tend to make such judgements after the event rather than pre-empt the outcome though. Call me old fashioned. :-)
Thedelldays Posted 7 January, 2011 Share Posted 7 January, 2011 one question I have always wanted to know the answer to.. which would have been the better way of paying into the community services (seeing as we seem to have to) Poll tax or council tax..? Poll tax. Sadly another good idea that fell victim to bad publicity and/or clumsy execution.

I cant remember..how did the council tax come about..and why was there not mass riots for that..?
aintforever Posted 7 January, 2011 Share Posted 7 January, 2011 I'm glad Quangos have been raped, some may have been cost effective but I think in the whole money will be saved. Plus the fact that they have been cut and will continue to be, will stop them taking the P.

The council tax was more punitive to 'middle england' who are better at apathy that rioting.
rocknrollman no2 Posted 7 January, 2011 Share Posted 7 January, 2011 This government is good at saying one thing, then ignoring it and doing the exact opposite. It doesnt surprise me that they have made a mess of trying to reduce the quangos and now, although they promised to do something about the bankers bonuses, those same bankers have said they are still going to pay out big bucks to themselfs again this year. This government only look after their own.
