Faz Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 Ok, own up. Who did it. Hate mail urges villagers to drive out Billy Bragg
swannymere Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 BNP apparently, probably one of Dune's mates.
Jonnyboy Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/celebrity/billy-bragg-has-absolutely-gigantic-house-201101063402/
Deppo Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 Sounds like something our resident right-wing crackpot would do.
hamster Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 check out many of billy's youtube inserts and you will read digs and diatribe aimed at him. quite sad really that they seek him out like this, why are they not attacking the capitalists? he is in fact imho a great advert for socialism....he has never forgotten his roots and regularly does benefit gigs in the same communities that he worked with in their darkest hours. still a regular at the tolpuddle gigs. love the bragg-meister.
rocknrollman no2 Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 Not one of my favourite singers, but as "hamster" mentioned, hes good at Tolpuddle(i go every year) and he always seems to be doing something for charitable causes. He also did a great song supporting the miners strike. I think the people having a dig at him must be very bigoted indeed.
Sour Mash Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 check out many of billy's youtube inserts and you will read digs and diatribe aimed at him. quite sad really that they seek him out like this, why are they not attacking the capitalists? he is in fact imho a great advert for socialism....he has never forgotten his roots and regularly does benefit gigs in the same communities that he worked with in their darkest hours. still a regular at the tolpuddle gigs. love the bragg-meister. Bit strange for someone so keen to promote anti-racism, he chooses to live in one of the whitest areas of the country. Take it he doesn't like Barking anymore?
hamster Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 /\ do you think he chose to live there because it is predominantly white? i doubt that very much. you do realise that his other half is mixed rave don't you?
Sour Mash Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 /\ do you think he chose to live there because it is predominantly white? i doubt that very much. you do realise that his other half is mixed rave don't you? I know, just playing devil's advocate more than anything, but his arguments against the BNP would carry a lot more weight if he was still living in amongst those communities where "race" was an issue.
anothersaintinsouthsea Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 Bit strange for someone so keen to promote anti-racism, he chooses to live in one of the whitest areas of the country. Take it he doesn't like Barking anymore? Think you're on to something, after all Dorset is very much like Barking except Dorset is more white.
hamster Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 imo bnp supporters are anti anyone who isn't pro bnp. in a nurshell
rallyboy Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 Billy's a top bloke, and a great songwriter, I don't blindly follow all of his ideas, disagree occasionally with his odd campaign but generally he's cool, and with him you get honest opinion. And thankfully the residents of Barking did serious damage to the BNP. Cue right wing extremist dinosaurs with no knowledge of his back catalogue or his history to start ranting.....call yourself a socialist yet you wear shoes etc
hamster Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 on the basis of him being a hypocrite that would make the blokes who set up that cadbury's village hypocrites too surely. not sure that they lived there though so maybe a moot point.
Deppo Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 Bit strange for someone so keen to promote anti-racism, he chooses to live in one of the whitest areas of the country. Take it he doesn't like Barking anymore? It's not Barking he doesn't like, it's all the foreigners! The hypocrite!
pap Posted 6 January, 2011 Posted 6 January, 2011 I'm impressed with the way the village reacted. Britons take their privacy seriously, so sending a letter like that was never going to work.
Patrick Bateman Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 Ok, own up. Who did it. Hate mail urges villagers to drive out Billy Bragg Well if he just shut up and stopped politically stirring, he presumably wouldn't get rubbish thrown back at him. I mean; " In 2001 he set up a website to encourage tactical voting to oust Tory MPs in South and West Dorset. More recently he has taken a stand against bankers' bonuses by refusing to pay taxes in protest. " What a tool.
miserableoldgit Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 I think that you will find that Billy Bragg was involved in setting up this, which probably upset the BNP :- http://www.folkagainstfascism.com/index.php Read the "About" page.
OldNick Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 Frankly I can't stand him or his music. Singing about socialist ideals seems to be a moneyspinner
dune Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 I'm actually friends with a lady who stood for Labour in my constituencies election in 2005 (i think it was 2005 - may have been the previous election) as she is in my local pubs quiz team - bit of a fat unkempt sort of lady and her husband wears rainbow coloured knitted jumpers (and drinks half pints) but nice people none the less. When she came to the door naturally I welcomed her in, but made it quite clear I wouldn't be voting for her or her misguided Socialist party. At the time I was disgusted by the anti hunt laws and made it perfectly clear that her party would never be wanted in the countryside, especially at this time.
Johnny Bognor Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 Frankly I can't stand him or his music. Singing about socialist ideals seems to be a moneyspinner Indeed, socialism can be quite lucrative for some.
dune Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 Bit strange for someone so keen to promote anti-racism, he chooses to live in one of the whitest areas of the country. Take it he doesn't like Barking anymore? He's a typical of the hobby Socialist type (Bridge too far i'd put in this category what with her being the daughter of Conservative activists). They are wealthy enough to be able to take the hit from an incompetent partys mismanagement of the economy, wheras if you're real working class namby pamy Socialist ideals aren't as important as jobs and prosperity for those of us who are prepared to do a days work.

When do you ever work? you spend your life on here 24/7 trolling and spunking over your keyboard dreaming about Rhodesia, The Empire, Victorian workhouses, slavery, White power, Thatcher, killing foxes...... Billy Bragg is a decent bloke unlike you a sad bitter twisted disturbed racist ****.

AndyNorthernSaints Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 If Billy is so decent and principled why has he abandoned urban life to live in the countryside? Read his book dunce. You might not enjoy the anti fascist bits in it though.
swannymere Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 If Billy is so decent and principled why has he abandoned urban life to live in the countryside? Who decided that being a good socialist meant living in the city? What about the Tolpuddle Martyrs? Falling short again dune, keep up old chap.
Special K Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 Considering he's had **** all chart success (and he sounds like a chorus of farts in a truckers diner at breakfast), he's earned himself a few bob judging by the gaff he lives in. Must charge a fortune for appearances at Socialist Worker rallies i s'pose. Either that or he's following Dune's share advice tips.
dune Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 Either that or he's following Dune's share advice tips. Some you win, some you lose, but i'm no quitter and in the long run i'll do very well.

Deppo Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 That nutter that sent the letters was definitely dune.
Verbal Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 That nutter that sent the letters was definitely dune. As dune's alternative log-in, I can confirm that.
dune Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 That nutter that sent the letters was definitely dune. That's not true, but we all know you posted as Wiltshire Saint.
Faz Posted 7 January, 2011 Author Posted 7 January, 2011 That nutter that sent the letters was definitely dune. I don't think Attila the Dune would stoop to that.
dune Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 I don't think Attila the Dune would stoop to that. It might surprise some of you to know I refused to sign my villages gypsies out petition.
Verbal Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 It might surprise some of you to know I refused to sign my villages gypsies out petition. Were you the only one in the village?
dune Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 Were you the only one in the village? I wouldn't know, but I have spoken to them and found them to be very nice people.

Where exactly does it say socialists must be poor? You response is typical of the often seen political ignorance of the right when it comes to trying to combat the 'red threat' - spread misinformation and bullsh!t. BB is one of the few who still has some integrity, happy to pay higher tax as a high earner as he appreciates the benefits of his circumstances. Campaigns actively against racism and seems to have a decent humanitarian approach to life. I dont agree with all his campaigns and I dont even agree with all of his politics, but I cant fault his honesty or integrity and that should be admired... seems to me that many on the right struggle with the old fashioned concept of respecting those values, even when they dont agree with all the opinions.
Deppo Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 That's not true Of course it was you. Who else would it be?
sotonjoe Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 When trying to claim that Billy's house is a sign of his own financial success it may be worth bearing in mind that his wife is a successful interior designer. I assume the property is as much a sign of her success as his and lots of info about it can be found on her website http://www.devalerodesign.com/
bridge too far Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 Dune - I generally have you on ignore but sometimes I have to read your silly diatribes because others quote you. FYI - whilst they voted Conservative, my parents were never 'activists'. My great aunt had been a Tory Councillor however. My father was a bricklayer who built up a very successful business but, in spite of that, I went to a state school and we only ever used the NHS. You'll be pleased to hear, no doubt, that my brother is almost as right-wing as you. So don't start making up stuff about me and my family - OK?

bridge too far Posted 7 January, 2011 Posted 7 January, 2011 (edited) Yes - my family - my great aunt, who was a tory councillor (and her husband and children who were active in her campaigns). Not my parents. Oh and when I was about 8 or 9, I did a lot of leafleting for her. Then I had the benefit of a good education and saw the light! Edited 7 January, 2011 by bridge too far

I assume the property is as much a sign of her success as his and lots of info about it can be found on her website http://www.devalerodesign.com/ Very socialist.
hamster Posted 8 January, 2011 Posted 8 January, 2011 Do people (some) really not understand what socialist ideals are? I guess that being a non-socialist makes one veer toward the inherent failings of their opposing 'ideal', however every 'ism has inherent flaws thus arguments gravitating towards those aspects that suit the critics agenda will stifle debate, ergo pointless and self-prophecising (sp) and we all hate each other. It's only through debating that we can find the common ground for the common good; polarised politics is bad, very bad.
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 Very subjective. I'm sure he hasn't murdered anyone, but then Dune probably hasn't either. Guess you are as thick as stanley/dunce. You looking at my pint Mr Internet hardman....
