Am I alone in finding it hugely disappointing that a once great competition is now regarded by so many as a distraction to be avoided?

It seems ludicrous that so many clubs are playing weakened teams in the hope of losing. In fact, it makes me wonder how many ties will be played between teams both trying fairly hard not to win?

Ormerod's Interview:

 

Blackpool striker Brett Ormerod has spoken of his joy at returning to one of his former clubs when the Seasiders face Southampton in the FA Cup third round tomorrow.

 

Ormerod spent five years on the South Coast, scoring 11 times in 98 league appearances as the Saints reached the FA Cup final and enjoyed their highest Premier League finish in 2003.

 

"It's been a long time since I left, about five years now and I've only played against them once since for Preston about three weeks after I left which felt a bit strange at the time.

"I had a good time there and had a good time at Southampton, it's a fantastic stadium St Marys and they've got good passionate supporters and stands for a good game.

 

"It was a special time to be at the club, getting to the FA Cup final and finishing 8th which was the club's best ever Premier League finish and qualifying for Europe as well," said Ormerod.

 

The 34-year old has made cameo appearances in the Tangerines last two league fixtures and is hoping for an opportunity to impress and stake a claim for a first team spot.

 

"I like playing football and when you're not it is frustrating, but to be fair it's hard to get in the team when the lads have been playing so well, you've just got to keep yourself sharp in training so you can impress when you do get the chance.

 

"It just shows, there's Alex Baptiste and Keith Southern as well who walked into the team last year and now are finding it that bit harder to get their place back after injuries. As players you get frustrated but you just keep on your toes and keep sharp.

 

"It's nice to get on the last couple of games but it's totally different to starting a game, I've been working hard but there's nothing like playing football games, "added Ormerod.

 

And the Pool legend praised former-Seasider Rickie Lambert with the striker set to lead the line against his former club on Saturday afternoon.

 

"Rickie Lambert started out here when he was a kid, I remember him and he's worked his way up the hard way at Macclesfield and Bristol Rovers.

 

"He's always been a fantastic player and he's showing just how good he is now and it's a great club for him to be at, the manager has gone in there and done wonders, they're second in the table and they've got a good run going.

 

"Hopefully they'll get back to where they belong because it's a big club and I really hope they get promoted this year," said Ormerod.

Of course, Sky's vested interest in The Premier League and to a lesser extent the Football League has a lot to answer for.

 

They don't have the rights to FA Cup ties so play it down, and a huge number of sad plastic fans happily take their lead and assume the Cup is an irrelevancy. And with the Sky money being so important, especially at PL level, clubs can't be blamed for reinforcing that view with their team selections.

 

Incidentally, very similar reasons lie behind the demise of international football in England.

I think its irrelevent if Puncheon is cup tied or not. His value will not diminish. The question is whether he can do a job for us and if by playing another player can be rested then yes he should play. Who pays his wages?

 

I did state that I wanted the same team who played at Daggers to play at Oldham. Richardson was a sub.

 

Gobern is better in the middle, but we need Chaplow with Schneiderlin in the middle.

But according to a lot of people on here, risk of injury (to any player, regardless of whether they are a transfer target) is one worth taking to play a full strength side in the FA Cup.... ;-)

I have thought long and hard on this and I have now changed my mind since the beginning the week.

Tomorrow is about tomorrow. Players need to play not rest.

One game at a time and tomorrow is the next game - and the plan has to be a win.

A bonus would be no injuries, no bookings (or sending offs) and a clean sheet!

Think about Oldham on Sunday! Never mind putting back the Charlton at home game if we win...Charlton mind still be in the Cup! (or will they?)

players pick up injuries in training etc as well, stop panicing and enjoy the cup run.

remember Dave Beasant dropped salad cream on his foot.

Funny old thread. What would the players do if they were not playing Blackpool? They would probably have a behind closed doors practice game where the risk of burnout / injury is marginally but not significantly lower. If I were a first team regular, I would be feeling pretty good about myself right now and would be royally disappointed if I could not gauge my progress against some PL players. I expect Blackpool to win but I'm hoping that we can put up a good show and it should be close. Last week I watched Fulham play WBA and concluded that we could have taken either side with a bit of luck and a fair wind.

 

A good team thrives on winning games whatever the competition. When you are winning you just want to keep playing so I suspect the whole squad can't wait to get out on the pitch tomorrow.

 

I can see the argument around the fixture backlog but hey, if we are going to play Champions League in a few years - we'd better get used to it!!

Haven't won in 4. Last win was about 6 weeks ago. Couldn't even hold on to a 3 goal lead at home to Exeter with 15 minutes left - the same Exeter we took apart with ease. So yes, I'd say average is about right.

 

They might beat us, but then that's football.

 

They also beat Brentford 3-1 away. Lost 1 at home all season. Two points behind us if they win the 2 games in hand. Does that make us average too? I hope we beat them but why the complacency is beyond me

Holloway in a foul mood? Maybe if he could have kept his trap shut on fielding his second team then the FA would not have been on his back with threats of fines and censure - this is the competition that really matters to the FA so you don't get away with telling 'em to FO.

 

However it also possible that Holloway has tried to sucker us on team selection and will indeed field his best eleven but why would we fall for that hoary old gambit (Adders?) when we don't even know who their first team is anyway - "Who R any of U?" comes to mind as the song of the day.

 

I hope we don't play silly buggers with our team selection as well, let's get the maxi boys out there Adders and run 'em off the park.

I still back Oldham to win this league, they are by far the best side we've seen at SMS this season, let's just hope we can stay second.

Incorrect. They are playing Swindon in the LEAGUE - a rearranged fixture that was cancelled in December. If we hadn't got to the 3rd round tomorrow we'd be playing Oldham in the league as originally scheduled.

Town's League 1 fixture against Oldham Athletic has been re-arranged for Saturday 8th January.

The match, which was postponed last weekend, has been moved to that particular date as both clubs are out of the FA Cup - the third round of which is set to be played that weekend.

mostly, but why do you want to play the same team as we played at Dagenham? I am specifically talking about Richardson here, who I regard as our first choice, ergo we would play him on Tuesday in what some regard as the more important game. Not being hostile here, just interested to know why Richardson is singled out seeing as he was the only first choice player that didn't start at Dagenham.

 

I guess by the same token I haev to ask why you don't want to rest Chaplow for Tuesday? Gobern has to play at some point otherwise he may as well be loaned out for the season.

stats on injuries in training -v- injuries in matches welcomed. Its not just injuries FFS. Its playing 2/3 games per week for three weeks running. Not ideal

didn't cross my mind that Olham would be playing tomorrow. Good news as there whole first team will hopefully be tires/injured/suspended.

 

They lost to Accringtom Stanley by the way for those involved in the side discussion about how `average' (not my words) Oldham are.

After Oldham we have another league match on Saturday, so its another week of 2 matches (or 3 in 8 days, again). I want to give the Oldham match a good go, not wait until "after Oldham".

well for a start, Lambert, Lallana and Puncheon were all injured before we had kicked a ball in a competitve game this season.

i want us to give both games 100%

 

why settle for less. The players can do it. Oldham have the same as us so have no real advantage for this fixture, which i agree will be very tough. I wouldnt be at all surprised if we lose, but thats not because of the cup, thats more to do with the fact i've seen us play appallingly badly away a few times already this season (none of which came after cup games)

 

just remember past cup runs for the fun that can be had.

see detailed threads on previous manager pre-season training regime. dont think all these happened in one trainining session FWIW

 

I give up. we should play the best team that we can on Sat, the same team that has played 3 games since 28th (and travelled up to Charlton on 26th) because Oldham away on Tues will be average, and then once they are back from Lancashire we should roll out the same 11 for Notts County and then we can look forward to the 4th round and two games a week for a while, and no other teams will catch us up. sorry for the pessimism.

i knew you'd see the light in the end. good lad.

 

Don't forget we can bring on 3 subs in each game, and make the odd change, like we did at Dagenham where the pitch was better suited to some players (eg Jaidi, Hammond), there are a few poitions where we have 2 players of similar standard, so making changes isn't neccessarily weakening the team.

Also forgot Frazer Richardson so make that 4 injuries in training or is preseason training not actually training? We should play a team to win, we should play a team to win every game, winning is a habit and good cups runs are good fun and build momentum and confidence. I am sure you'll be wanting a ticket if we draw Man Utd, Chelsea or Pompey if we get through to the next round. Although some people might just be happy to be losers.

and as for Bucks Saints other comment, we have got to be the unluckiest team in the country, first our (now premier league) manager tried to ruin our season by "training the players too hard" (hahahaha), and now it is under threat by WINNING CUP MATCHES.

 

God we have got to be due a change in fortune soon.

the 12 or so cup games last season..we only won 2 league games that followed cup games..

and on a couple of occasions, the cup games stopped winning runs..

we dropped 16+ points in the games immediately after cup games last season...

saints lose games, just have we have done this season, reason being sometimes we are just not very good or up to the fight. chances are we would have lost them anyway.

In my opnion the cup games were the highlight of the season and am VERY THANKFUL that we had them.

probably not but one would think that reserves in the average Prem side ought to be a match for an L1 side, so

the question is ..do they have strength in depth or are we better than the average L1 side.

 

Answers: a bit of each ...and they won't be a walkover !

Totally agree, winning breeds confidence. Last January we were in 2 cup competitions and our form from then until the end of the season was the best in the league. They deserve a thrashing for disrespecting a historic cup competition
