Sour Mash Posted 6 January, 2011 Share Posted 6 January, 2011 That is absolutely pathetic in my opinion and shows how short sighted some managers are. He clearly didn't notice bottom of the table pompey in the final last year. or championship clubs Barnsley, Cardiff and West Brom in the semi finals 2008. I remember Wycombe and Chesterfield in the semi finals in recent times. What Holloway should be saying is they have zero chance of winning the premier league, but have a real chance of going through a few rounds of the FA Cup and who knows could get to Wembley in the semi finals. Exactly. Oh what great glory to struggle along as a mid/lowwer prem team for another year or so! Also, how sh!t would it now be if we field our full strength team and go on to lose. In 30 years time nobody will remember that Hollowhead kept Blackpool in the top flight for 2 seasons or that DJ Campbell scored an equaliser at home to Liverpool. Lord Duckhunter Posted 6 January, 2011 Share Posted 6 January, 2011 I take it that those of you who aren't interested in the cup or would rather we weren't involved, wont be wanting tickets if we reach the Semi Final or get a decent draw next round? At least there wont be a mad rush for tickets as there was for the JPT. Those old fashioned ones amongst us,who want us to win it or make history as the first 3rd flight finalists, will get tickets no problem.

Would people have swapped that wonderful day for promotion that season? Except that we were not promoted that season (1975/6). We were not promoted the following season either (1976/7). We were promoted in 1978 (1977/8 I believe Laurie is quoted to have said that we would never have achieved promotion with the squad that won the cup. We were promoted with only five players of the cup-winning squad (Turner, Peach, Holmes, Blyth and Osgood). Even Channon had left for Man City. It was generally a tougher squad that promoted us, strengthened with the likes of Chris Nichol, Ted MacDougall, Allen Ball and Phil Boyer. So I hope a good cup run will not be an omen for delaying promotion by two years again. Stick to potshooting ducks, mlud.

I'm fully aware of the timescales and players we had. The point I was trying to make was that before the 3rd round Villa game, nobody could have foreseen a cup win, not even Lawrie himself.Had Lawrie taken the modern approach and dimissed the cup as a fixture congestion, then the greatest day in our sporting lives would never have happened.I would take another 3 years in this league, if it meant looking back as an 80 year old at memories of the only 3rd flight side to ever win the thing.Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I prefer the appraoch of past years, "lets win every game we play and paly a full side". For a club with such a historic cup history, I find Hollowhead's approach sad. Edited 6 January, 2011 by Lord Duckhunter

I think it would have done us a favour had we drawn a team that would respectfully knock us out at this stage. Getting knocked out by Arsenal or Man City wouldnt have dented too many ego's or knocked too much confidence and we could have carried on concentrating on the league. As it is Blackpool at home on paper seems fairly winnable with all things considered. The team wont want to lose a winnable game as that could have a knock on effect for a few other games coming up, but adding another tough game to the already full calendar by winning might not do us too many favours either. Without actually wanting to see us lose it might be good to control the game and get beaten last min by a dodgy penalty would see a good day out and a good attitude to take into tuesday maybe. Look at the two Cup finals we've been to in recent history. 2003, finished 8th. We haven't been higher up in Englsih football in about 25 years. Then there's last season, when we were the second best team in the League, even in spite of that awful start. Our history is littered with counter arguments for this theory. 03/04 we managed to get ourselves into 4th at Christmas. Then, a couple of games later, we got knocked out to Newcastle in the 3rd round of the cup and fell down to 12th by the end of the season. Two years ago we lost at home to Man Utd in the third round. Made no difference to our eventual league possition and we still ended up relegated. I could go on...

Blackpool might put out another 10 man changed team and i think any likely team we'll put out could match that.
