To the moron abusing 'not proper' Saints fans @ Winchester train station yesterday...

In the vague hope that your 1 brain cell enables you to use a computer, I just wanted to remind you that our club does actually have supporters who live in other parts of the county, country and around the world - not just the city of Southampton!

...and well done for shouting and swearing just when the doors were closing!!

*Rant over*

;)

Could any one of the select group of posters on here who revel in judging the validity of fellow contributors support in terms of whether they live in the city and how often they go to games.

On a similar note, I do find it odd how fans of clubs like SFC, always tell non Manc Man United fans etc they should "support their local teams". However, distant fans (the ones that aren't from the city of the team they support) of smaller clubs get the biggest credit for their "amazing support".

Made me laugh a few years ago joining in singing 'we support our local team' when we were playing Arsenal at Highbury - ten minutes walk from my flat. I only lived in Southampton for the first 18 months of my life and the majority of my adult life has been spent in various parts of North London, predominantly in Arsenal country.

I guess this means I'm a glory hunting non-proper Saints fan, ignoring the minor local team on my doorstep in favour of the giants of the South coast ;)

Supported Saints for 36 years but left city 23 years ago to join up. Have lived all over the country and now live in Wilts but was there saturday !! Maybe I should support my nearest club then which is er........Swindon !!!

Saints have a very loyal northern following. I don't go to as many games as I used to, but when I did go week in week out you'd always see different faces at Northern games who really got behind the team/were more up for getting ****ed and having a laugh far more than those fans who had the opportunities to easily attend home games/local aways. The camerarderie at Northern games has always been better imo.

Like this thread. Internet bonding. Guided missile will be having kittens though.

I was born in Winchester, but moved away after a couple of years. No Southampton based family or anything. Moved around the country as a kid. Settled in Derby at age 11 by which time I felt obliged to support Saints as the closest pro team to my birthplace. I loved footy so much that I even had a season ticket at the baseball ground for a year, but in this time always supported saints.

As I got older I made it to plenty of matches and was privileged to watch our rapid descent, before moving to korea. The absolute lowpoint was when my heart was ripped out at pride park in the playoffs when I was in the saints end watching all my mates celebrate their undeserving penno victory in the playoffs.

Always proud to support saints, and anyone who gives our own fans grief is surely mental?

Started supporting saints in 1984 after we beat Liverpool on the tele. Being just a young whipper snappy I thought it was the world cup final until my dad pointed out that Southampton was a port on the south coast of England! Followed the great team ever since but sadly never lived in Southampton. In a strange twist on the story I now live in Liverpool!!!

Posted

Was born in South London/Surrey and have lived here ever since. Had it drilled into me by my Dad from a young age so I had little choice really. This is my first season since I was 4 without a season ticket, but I still do every home game and 90% of aways. Living here is actually much easier for away games too.

Yeah, what was his philosophy on this again?

Expat Saints "Fans"...

...seem to come in two flavours on this site.

1.Last of the Summer Wine

Usually post in glowing terms about days gone by, trying hard to recapture the glory days, back in the mother country. About as entertaining to read as the TV show of the same name, and also about as relevant, to the fans streaming into St. Marys nowadays. Keep it up guys, I think you know who you are, but don't blame me if I think of Compo, when I read your posts. Let's face it, nostalgia is not what it used to be.

2.Last of the Scummer Whine

Usually post in negative terms about anything related to the club, city or the country. In the early stages of going native, so not reached that grumpy charm that Compo has. More the expression that the club, city or country they left behind didn't quite fit their ideals, those that served them so badly when they lived here. Zero entertainment value in their posts at the moment and the only relevance to the fan of today is the possiblity that more impressionable section of our fanbase may detect a slight lowering of their moral, when reading them. I think of Lord Haw Haw when reading the uninformed dirge they post. He was hanged for treason, but I think the penalty for them, when Saints are back in the premiership will be the sight of their gradual decline into a sad exile, never quite belonging to their new country and unable to return to God's country to see their team play...

HTH...

Winchester based fans will get a mention from me, when I've finished my new "Dirty Northern B@ stards" thread...

I didn't post on a Saints website. I played soccer and cricket in the US and the only time I was able to watch Saints was at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, with 75,000 other fans, a suprising number of whom were wearing Saints shirts.

The opportunity to watch Saints when I had retired from playing was a key element in moving back. Seeing more of my family/Southampton/England were a close second.

I will now refrain from providing too many more personal details on a web site. Alpine made that mistake and the thought of him in a XXXL replica shirt, typing his bitter posts, destroyed the image I had of him.

Anyone who doesn't have a SO postcode isn't a proper Saints fan to be fair.

So you have to rescind your birthright if you move away?

I could never support any team other than Saints...it's been tested a few times particularly when I went out with a stunning Ipswich supporter (she was sooooo cute) but it's not a choice actually - it's in the blood.:)

I understand GM but thanks for giving us that snippet

is there really narrow minded saints fans intimating you can not be a saints fan unless you have an SO post code

How sad. Does that now mean Im not entitled to be a saints fan anymore and there was me thinking I was a true Saint My story was in the exeter programme. "Home thoughts from abroad"

1981 i think..some preseason thingy.

Thanks didn't remember that 75,000 for a pre season game ! Bit different to these days.

Been to Giants to see the Boss a few times, shame they pulled it down

Born South Wales and brought up on Rugby Union-moved to New Forest in 1961 aged 10 and have been going to Dell/St Mary's ever since. Saints the only Football club I have ever supported but always support Wales when they play England!

Maybe it wasn't quite 75,000!

Celtic competed in the Trans-Atlantic Cup in the summer of 1981 after being invited to America for the round-robin tournament at the very last minute.

The Bhoys invite came after Shaktar Donetsk, then playing in the Soviet league set up, pulled out of the competition in protest that the host club New York Cosmos were planning to field South African Steve Wegerle.

However whether Shaktar’s decision was motivated by an admirable stance against apartheid or as a consequence of the United State’s boycott of that year’s Moscow Olympics is uncertain.

Whatever the reason Celtic, tempted by a £50,000 appearance fee, made a last minute dash to New York and arrived in the city just 24 hours before their first game – against Cosmos at the Giants Stadium on Sunday July 12th.

A crowd of 29,000 saw the Hoops struggle in the 90 degree as the home side made the most of their familiarity of the astro-turf pitch to win 2-0.

Celtic then flew across the US to take on the Seattle Sounders on July 14th before a crowd of 21,000. Playing at the Kingdome, once more on an artificial pitch, Charlie Nicholas opened the scoring for the Bhoys with a sublime volley but the home side soon settled into their game and came back to win 2-1

Celtic returned to New York for their final match, an Anglo-Scots affair against Kevin Keegan’s Southampton on July 19th. An impressive 25,000 crowd turned out to see the double header with the Cosmos and Sounders clashing after the opening match.

Goals from Davie Provan and a last gasp Charlie Nicholas tap-in sandwiched a Moran effort for the Saints as the Hoops finished off the competition with a 2-1 victory. The Seattle Sounders would claim the trophy following a 3-3 draw with New York.

SUMMARY:

11/07/1981 Seattle Sounders 3-1 Southampton [in Seattle]

12/07/1981 New York Cosmos 2-0 Glasgow Celtic

17/07/1981 New York Cosmos 3-3 Seattle Sounders [att: 40,000]

Didn't we also play Seattle at The Dell, late 70's?

They had the shoot-out lines on the pitch and if memory serves me right the ex Leeds Keeper

Also for some reason seem to think Terry Paine had a run out

Vancouver White Caps. Jimmy Greaves played for us (and scored) David Harvey in goal I think Alan Ball played 45 mins for each side as he had played for them during the summer

Well, it was pre-season and as "one who has been proved correct" keeps insisting, we are always awful at that time of the year.

Early 80's - be surprised if any of the squad can remember even flying to the US

Nobody around me in the Kingsland lives in Southampton, but we either used to, had family who used to, or adopted the Saints through marriage (my husband). Many from the Bournemouth area. Actually, might upset a few on here, but back when football was cheap, it was common to watch the Cherries one week and the Saints the next. There wasn't any rivalry; Bournemouth were just the second team.

I think many stillc would support both. I think the Cherries are the ones who think about rivalry

I was born in Southampton, but Dad’s job took him away when I was young and we never moved back. All my kids support Saints and yet none of them were born in the City or have ever lived in it. They just follow my team (they have had it rammed down their throats since youngsters). After the away game at Swindon this season my little lad who is 11 said “I wish you had never been born in Southampton”. My Dad used to watch Saints one week and Boscombe the next and gradually started to travel back to Southampton less and less, whereas I kept it up and never considered watching Boscombe regular.

I go to the game with a crowd of guys from Poole and I’m the only one who was born in Southampton. However, I am the one who goes to the least amount of away games out of all of us. A part of me does wonder why they never supported Boscombe, I guess when they were younger they just followed the bigger and better localish club. At the end of the day, we are all supporters, whether you were born and bred in the City, born and moved away or just follow the club with no obvious ties to it. It’s not for others to judge who is a real supporter (unless you’re talking about the ones who have abandoned us since the Premiership days).

A group of us used to do that in the days when Cherries had McDougall and Bowyer

Born in London, moved down to Chandlersford at 18 months then to Winchester when 6.

Taken to an Easter Monday game at the Dell - bristol Rovers I think - when I was about 9 or 10. That was it.

Then we went and won the cup, oh the joy of ramming that down my mates who supported wither Manure or Liverpool.

Left Winchester at 18 to go to poly in London. Come to a few games a year with my 10 year old son who is now an indoctrinated SAINT.

One day I will be a true supporter and have a season ticket.

Born in Winchester but lived in Chandlers Ford until I was about 9 years old. I was then moved up north to a small town near Crewe in Cheshire (where I still live)

I still go to about 5 or 6 home games every season and most of the northern away games plus a few in London when I can. I even drag along some of my Middlesbrough, Norwich, Swansea, Leeds, Man Utd and Stoke supporting mates from school to a few away games so i can reduce the train prices using my railcard. No way do you need an SO postcode to support saints! As Train prices are rising (and I'm nearly 16 so they will soon double :( ), would anyone be interested in hiring coaches/mini buses for Northern Saints around the Manchester area?

Before any of you say, I'm on my brother's account who used to live in Japan, hence 'Tokyo-Saint'

Posted
You don't need to do that as the anagram Misguided Lies is a perfect anagram

I was born in Southampton, but have spent the best part of 20 years living in PO postcodes. If anything, that makes more more of a fan considering the amount of **** I've had to put with from the Blue few (especially in the last 5 years). For those who live in an SO postcode, it's easy for you.

Skate c*nt.

born and bred in Sholing up until 20 then moved to Lovedean ....for love (ok shoot me, she was a Pompey lass). Great in the early 90's sticking it to Pompey college friends. Then to Farnham (boring as) and onto London in 97. In Melbourne since December.

A Saint through and through and don't anyone dispute it.

I live in the hell hole that is Andover, surronded by plastic Mancs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs fans.

Been watching Saints since i was 6.

Only missed 5 games in the last 2 seasons.

Posted

Well I certainly qualify as a Glory Hunter. :D

Sadly never have set foot in Southampton or indeed the UK. ( yet - oh boy will you hear me the day I finally get to go to a game )

Fell in love with the Saints after finally discovering this strange game called football ( or Soccer as we sadly refer to it here in Aus ) Spent many a midnight to 2am session listening to the Saints ( And crying... but lets not go there :p ) Bought a membership each season for the last few , although a bit strange It's one way I can help the club.

Thankfully our football coverage over here has got a million times better of late - sadly it coincided with the Saints plummeting thru the leagues.

Many thanks to all the locals who have helped answer my Saints questions through out the years.

Was brought up in Surrey and moved to Alresford at age of 16. Not really interested in football but persuaded to go to a match in 1964 by some friends on the same course at Southampton Tech. Drew 2-2 with Leyton Orient . I was hooked from then on. Still a season ticket holder although I live in Shropshire now. Not missed a home game this season. My two sons and two of my granddaughters are now season ticket holders.
