We have already made substantial bids for players

Substantial bids means the likes of Austin,Le Fondre,Danns,Stock and Woolford could be being bid for?

I think we will try and bring in another striker, winger and possibly another centre back and central midfielder aswell as Guly permanentely

Agree on those names you've mentioned. A winger is a definite. Woolford his his 8th goal of the campaign today... Marc Pugh might be another one to add to the list.

Attacking midfielder, perhaps? Maybe a striker, but he'd have to be some player to beat either Lambert/Guly/Barnard to the first XI.

Alpine if you had witnessed the last Three performances, especially the Demolition of Huddersfield, you would not be so Pessimistic.

People wonder why Alpine doesn't post on here much after victories - it's probably because he knows full well that threads are going to be full of smug insults aimed at him. Perhaps if people didn't attack him so vehemently, he wouldn't get so defensive and be more open to changing his opinions. No need for it, so please stop.

Why is no one talking about a goalkeeper? We need someone who can dominate the box and come for crosses. That is a real defensive weakness for us at present.

Davis is a good club captain and a very respected link between the players and the management. He has helped sort out many issues behind the scene but out on the field he is a weak link. Great shot stopper but being a keeper, even in Div 1, is more than that.

I have said it for a while, and said at the start of the HCDAJFU thread that i reckon we would see a new goalkeeper in the near future.

Sam Baldock and Martyn Woolford are two players we've apparently bid for.

Source isn't my usual, so I'm taking it with a pinch of salt.

Only time will tell I guess.

Woolford looks good. Playing well, and scoring for a team in the relegation zone. Nigel obviously managed him so knows all about him. I know less about Baldock. What type of striker is he? Wiki says he's a 5'7", so I'm imagining he's a speedster.

He brings it on entirely himself. Hence he is on my ignore list.

If everyone stays fit then yes i don't see why not, look at the strength on the bench today.

Perhaps a winger, but i would say thats all we need really, as long as the front men keep scoring.

Bit of a face palm there. When has any team ever gone through a season without injuries? You only have to think back to those games when Lallana was injured and we didn't score for a month. If Lallana, Lambert, Chaplow or AOC got injured, we'd be looking decidedly dodgy again. Another winger, striker and midfielder if you please Mr Adkins.

all we need to do this window is offer lallana £10k/week and a £1m signing on fee - all parties should be happy with that deal (from our perspective - would you be happy signing a player of lallana's quality for £1m?? absofruitly!!)

Very good point.

I'd be totally happy acquiring someone of his skill and guile for £1m (I would actually pay even more!!!), so would have no problem him getting that kind of transfer fee as a signing on fee.

He is just different class IMHO.

My worry is that he wants to play at a higher level and will make his decision at the end of this season one way or the other.

Yeah ok, we are only really slightly short on the wings though and if we are honest only really want a new winger and striker as we are all a bit greedy and want things to be garaunteed under every circumstance.

We have a quality back line and back ups, and a quality midfield and back ups, and TBH up front is nothing to be sneered at at the level we are at.

We need to go up to stand a chance of keeping him IMO, and reckon that we might if we did get promoted.

I know less about Baldock. What type of striker is he?

Baldock is a good, young striker who is highly rated at MK Dons.

I've had the pleasure of meeting him on a handful of occasions and I know that we wouldn't be the only club to have taken a closer look at him, providing we are interested that is.

In terms of his style, he's not too dissimilar to Barnard IMO, in that he's a grafter, gives his all but he certainly knows where the goal is.

He'd be a good signing, more than capable at this level, but whether he's the type of player we need right now, I'm not so sure. Potentially a long-term replacement for Connolly?

It wasn't in the first half of the season Nick and the debacle against Brentford wasn't that long ago. If we are to keep this up we do need some more quality in.
And even with that Bern, we are still second in the table. I think any signings will be to get us off and running next year in the Championship. I accept we have a long way to go yet but a good work in progress

He has not really been given a chance so I don't know. the fact he cannot shift Davis suggests he is not good enough but I have nothing to substantiate that.

It would take a lot of money to buy a goal keeper that would. I recognise Davis faults, but you have to remember where we are, and whilst he does have his faults, I still think he is the leagues best goalie. Can't see any point in spending money in this department, until we are promoted.

Jesus...

try a football post.

Yes this squad should easily be good enough to go up. Look at Brighton's forwards ffs - no where near the depth we have - even considering injury records etc.

Add to that we are doing better than anyone else in the league.

I hope we add to the squad - to improve the squad to make it closer to a certainty, but any fool can see this squad has the quality to do it (I see the problem now!)

We have been fortunate Ron. Making second whilst still losing 7 games shows how open it is this season. Pardew didn't have that going for him last season with the top clubs keeping clear water between them and the rest. Having said that Adkins has kept plugging away and the last three results have been excellent. We have as good a chance as anybody but I would feel more comfortable with a couple of new faces. Things certainly look a lot brighter than after the Brentford game. Can't remember too many Christmases when we won all of the games.

It has been (particularly with Guly and Chaplow) ever since Adkins has been manager - have a look at the "Adkins record" thread.

I have to admit I find it strange that people doubt the squad we have is good enough to win this league? We were cast iron favourites at the begining of the season and bar Brentford we've turned it on quite nicely so far. It's not as if we've been crap for any great period, it's just been the odd hiccup.

Another striker or two, midfield cover and that's pretty much all I can think of...

they do, if a lesser squad can do it then we should be able to. We should - should! - be able to walk to automatic promotion with today's squad.

If both Guly or Chamberlain are not available we will not have any pace up front. We need to keep or replace Puncheon. At the moment Guly's movement and pace and Chamberlain's penetration is our main threat, take that away and we are pretty pedestrian. IMO we need two alternatives to cover and compete. If we don't it could dry up the goals and derail the promotion. We need a goalkeeper that will dominate the penalty area. The Exeter goalkeeper played a blinder against us and prevented a rout, he was pretty good all round and surprisingly I believe was their reserve keeper.

Admittedly, Jaidi seems to have had a few good games, but I just don't think he's good enough, and Seabourne doesn't convince me. I liked the look of Martin at the start of the season, but if he can't get in the team (atleast given another chance) in front of these two, then I'm not sure Adkins rates him, and I trust Adkins.

We won't have any idea who we're going to sign though, as it will probably be someone we've not even given a thought!
