Scummers Lose At Home, Scummers Lose At Home, Super Saints Have Won Away........

Every team calls their rivals Scummers.

Yeah, not really being into all the name calling, this confused me the other day. I was looking at some other team's forum and they were talking about the scummers........I was wondering how Saints fit into the conversation, but we didn't. They were talking about some other jack-offs. That nickname is all over the place.

That nickname is all over the place.

Indeed it is.

Norwich use it to refer to Ipswich, Luton call Watford it, Grimsby call Hull it etc etc etc.

It's not unique to us and their attempts at making it look as though they have a monopoly on this standard and unoriginal slur are as risible as their justification of the SCUM acronym.

'SCUMpey' and the occasionally heard 'Swamp Rats' (as p*rtsea island was largely reclaimed marshland) were knocking about 70s/80s, 'skates' came about through the Ugly Inside fanzine...though hardly menacing enough for rivals. 'Blue-few' is just very appropriate and probably narks 'em most as it belittles them.

I am surprised by your reaction as it is well known how thick the Skates are. The plain don't have enough brain power to think off something else.

how old is the `shoot the pompey scum' song as I don't recall singing it in the 80s?

I remember singing it in the late eighties and early nineties at the back of the Milton Road end.

Ah the memories, takes me back to the mid 70's when i was doing my paper round, reading how they were going out of business and loving every word, they were in div 3 then.

I hated the C*nts then just as much as now. Nothing has changed, there still broke.

After i left school i spent 5 years working in p*mpey dockyard, the term "Skate" is one the locals use for the RN and i'm sure they defo dont like themselves being referred to as SKATES, so i say keep it up.

We used to refer to them as scummers for as long as i can remember but it just seemed to lack originality, I also like fish heads, fish f*ckers / fornicators etc, but Skate is quick and to the point.

Happy days

OK...so the naked jig around the house didn't go so well, BUT

I seem to remember the nickname going both ways up until the Steve Moran cup match. So mid eighties we were still calling them scummers, or moreover Pompey scum...

Definitely scummers in the 80's not sure when the change occurred though?

Still a few old boys of my age refuse to let the scummers tag die.

Scumpey I can remember using in the '80s...they were always scum in my recollection...I haven't got a problem with skatescum but a Pompey supporting supplier of ours says it's difficult to get out of your hair...

I'll leave the naked dance until I get back from the bar, but what's the tune for the above??

I could try with the "La la la's" but would never get there.

Just trust me on this one :) :)

I definately remember calling them scummers in the 84' cup game but after that it goes a bit hazy.....old age I suppose.

Always will be scummers for me.

They were always Scummers - its a universal term for your rivals used throughout the leagues.

(and no need to embarrass ourselves by making up a cringeable story about how SCUM is really an acronym for Solent Confederation of Unemployed Men who stole So'ton jobs, or some other girly fable LMFAO).

Think the reason its hazy, is that for 20 years after that game we only played them 2 or 3 times and once again they just slipped off the radar, languishing in the lower leagues whilst we got stuck in to playing with the big boys. We weren't really bothered about them.

Which is why 84 was such a big game, as for the previous 20 years we only managed 4 derbies as they were just so awful (and just like now, were regularly having financial troubles). In the last 50 years, alart from the brief 2005-2011 period, they were never in our league (in more ways than one).

And given their current state, this may be true for another 50 years!

And the old girl shines again :) :) :) :)

Saints win at Anfield away and the skates lose at home to Fleetwood.

Carlsberg written all over it

Every team calls their rivals Scummers. Glad we call them Skates, it's a bit more original. I only hear people call them Skates, not Scummers.

No they don't. Many call their rivals "the scum" (eg Leeds with Man U), but "scummers" was unique to our fishy friends until fairly recently, until it became a derivative of "scum" for some other teams too, no doubt led by some kind of online laziness or misunderstanding on a forum.

Wonder what excuse is today ?

They still won the FA cup 6 years ago remember. That's much more important than their current league position.

And held it for a record seven years don't forget.

Courtesy of Mr A. Hitler.

Several million perished during those seven years, but to the current generation of skates, the Cup was worth it, whatever the cost.

does anyone really care any more. They're so far behind us they've become irrelevent .We had the last laugh .

Care? No, certainly not, but laugh at their attempted rise but epic fail, why yes!

I remember there was a poll or equivalent back in the early part of the 00's to finally nail their 'name.' Skates was the one that caught on.

Scummers always was too general a term. Just like everything to do with that damned island. Generic, poorly thought out and lacking in flair.

It was earlier than that.

on 5Live last night they were talking about second teams. One guy sent a message in to say when he got married to a girl from Portsmouth his second team became Pompey. When they divorced, he changed to Saints. Ian Wright was in stitches.
