sadoldgit Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Then I suggest you go back and look at last year's results, pal... Still two wins in two games in the Premiership, I doubt very much if he is bothered.
Guan 2.0 Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 what a great result with having made changes to a squad which won well on saturday and playing a team fighting for their lives on a questionable surface i think it will prove a huge boost to both the players and fans confidence. we are proving to be able to really push for a top two finish this season. i wholey admit i didnt like guly in his earlier games i thought his shooting passing and headiing left alot to be desired but he did have the willingness to run and work hard that maybe being his greatest attribute in what has seen him get to grips more with the english game and me to change my opinion of him. COYR This. Plus Hammond, who i was critical of earlier this season sounded like he had a good game, apart from a free Kick (though when I was sat next to KBS and he thought Guly was rubs, I still thought he would come good). Oh, and the contrast of Steve Cotterils 'Gareth from the office' interveiews and Adkins Cheeky chappy style is magnificent.
hutch Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 I was not over enthralled with his appointment and was starting to wonder after the first 20minutes against Huddersfield. He did something to turn the teams performance around and so Ihave given him some slack. I have a record of supporting the permanent management teams at the club and so it was odd for me not to be 100% behind NA. I gave him time and have warmed to him. Im not fully a NA fan and dont sing his name but feel the best I have for some time about the manager and the way the club is going. He's won promotion twice in recent years. We haven't! And he's a qualified sports psychologist. New territory for us. Keep the faith.
Um Bongo Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Only thing that concerned me today was how vulnerable we looked when it was 2-1. We went from looking solid to loose diarrhoea in a matter of seconds. They easily could have been level.
Dark Munster Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Why do you have to be so radical with your comments about NA and the associated sarcasm? I don't see anyone think he walks on water, just comments that he is doing a very good job for us in the early part of his career. I don't think anyone can dispute that at all. Averaging over 2 points per game assuming it continues (and there is no reason to feel it wouldnt) is simply a good effort that will get the automatic promotion we need and god like status does not come into it. Contrary to what you think, it is not easy to get a team full of perceived stars for the level to perform consistently (E.g. Chelsea right now) but that is exactly what NA is doing so at L1 level. If we all took your view then NA is clearly on a hiding to nothing as if he gets the team up anyone could have done it but if he was to fail he would get slated. With you he cannot win. Dean Wilkins certainly proved that.
dickyhale Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Just back home from the game a very good win today on a cow field pitch (remember last year when we played Wycombe Wanderers away) Did think it was a banana skin game. We look so comfortable then let the daggers back in the game at 2-1........ Liked the banter with the goalkeeper today (YOU FAT B@STARD) was a real laugh and goalie give us a wave and when he did again (you fat b@stard) plus to the other player "you got a strawberry on your head" Really enjoyed todays away game.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Only thing that concerned me today was how vulnerable we looked when it was 2-1. We went from looking solid to loose diarrhoea in a matter of seconds. They easily could have been level. This worries me too. Didn't go today but i can imagine the panic
Um Bongo Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 cheer up! Don't get me wrong, I think in previous seasons we would have drawn this game, maybe even lost. But Dagenham were quite possibly the worst team I've seen in any league. To let them back into the game was a little worrying.
doggface Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Another great result- things are looking up & the squad looks strong.
Berkshire Saint Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Watched the game from the Dagenham terrace, most of the Dagenham fans were just delighted to be playing us and raving about Lallana and Chamberlain. They were a decent bunch overall really. Decent performance from Saints and fully deserved the win. Dominated the first half but bar a one on one from Lambert (which he would have buried last season) we didn't create too many clear cut chances. Lost our way a bit when it went 2-0 and at 2-1 we looked very shaky. All the Dagenham fans thought they should have had a penalty (didn't see much in it myself) and thought a free kick that came off the bar had crossed the line. Wasn't too sure myself but the linesman was in a perfect position and I think I can trust his judegment ahead of the Dagenham fans!
shirleysfc Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 This. He played far too deep and seemed to get in the centre backs way too often.
smithy Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 This worries me too. Didn't go today but i can imagine the panic That's football and why we all love it.
Dr Who? Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Four south clubs in the championship would be great! Throw Reading into that, only 45 minutes away, and it would be a fantastic league to be in. We are on a great run, but really could have done without the FA Cup on Saturday!
Andy Durman Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Back from the game. A game we dominated and almost threw away at the end. Great friendly place to go and enjoy a 3-1 win and I was able to get the autographs of all the Saints players including Nigel Atkins and Dean Wilkins. The coach waited for a god hour after the match in the car park and there simply no stewards. You were able to chat with Lambert, Lallana, Davis, Chaplow and others as they didn't get on the coach until later. I have spoken to Lambert about pre-season and his injuries. I got the latest news on Puncheon. Chamberlain told me he was not going anywhere. Chaplow told me when his contract was agreed and I had a lovely little conversation with Dean Wilkins. Ow and Nigel Atkins who is a lovely man and commands respect (always travels on the bus with the squad). Anyway to the game. One of Daggers player said it was over and another said he wasn't sure. Kelvin said it was 6 inches in front of the line. TV replays will show better. Anyway we really rode our luck in the last 10 minutes and I think it was self inflicted. Yes Chamberlain may have been tired, but Guly was running the show through the middle and I could see a few more goals. We looked disjointed when Guly went to the right and although he scored we did not look the same team. Richardson was problem one too many subs. Lallana was fantastic and although Guly missed a sitter of a header in the first half I think he is the better partner for Lambert. Take your pick from either for MOM. Lambert put a good shift in today although he keeps creeping wide on occasions. Chaplow, Hammond, Fonte and Jaidi one most of there battles. Winning the ball first, second and sometimes third, but still the Daggers did not give up and you have to give them credit. Chamberlain is class, but he is nowhere near as fast as Walcott. Butterfield and Dickson were solid. I think we should have been out of site by 70 mins with all the chances we had. Great day and proud to be a Saint. I will enjoy my wine and dream of being Champions. Chaplow is the difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!
brmbrm Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 For God's sake, man, give it a rest. You made it very clear that you didn't want him here in the first place, largely because you knew nothing at all about him. Since then it has been a succession of snide digs and comments in a futile attempt to prove yourself right, coupled with righteous indignation if someone takes issue with your constant uni-topic bleating. When it comes to constantly banging on about the same topic without any basis in fact, and when it comes to doing it again and again when everyone's sick of hearing it, you and Dalek have no peers. It brings to mind that line in Good Morning Vietnam - "I've never seen anyone in more dire need of a blow job". I think that's a bit unfair to Dalek - he has made some non-Hoddle-related posts recently.
Seaside Saint 2 Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 I got the latest news on Puncheon. Umm, fancy sharing?
Dr Who? Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Just seen the goals, and all were top draw. Well played Saints!

eelpie Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Let's NOT lose to Blackpool. Neither team is that bothered about a cup run this season. Blackpool could well rest a few players and don't want a draw any more than we do. I reckon it'll be end to end stuff from both teams and at home we can give anyone a game. I vote we go all out for a win and see what happens. We have nothing to lose playing against Blackpool. They have their new found (and deserved) reputation to preserve. I am looking forward to an entertaining game, and an opportunity to see how our sometimes sublime passing game matches 'pools Premiership bustling flair. The result doesn't matter. But we'll all be dead chuffed if we do win and draw a top team. Just so long as we don't draw.
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 For the first time since Leon Best smacked his penalty off my wide screen TV I feel that we are well positioned and heading in the right direction. Well done Saints.

Just don't draw!
eelpie Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 In my opinion Hammond was our weakest player today. He played far too deep and seemed to get in the centre backs way too often. Lambo plays quite deep too a lot of the time and does a lot of foraging, drawing defenders and assists. We seem to be playing best with one forward upfront ( Gooly) and three midfielders (Lallana, Lambert, Oxo) closing up, with Chaplow and Schneiders or Chaplow behind. Though in truth there is a lot of movement, especially from Chaplow, and changing of positions. Seems to work, and seems to stretch the opposition. We also seem to get back into defence well now. I thought our back four, five and six completely stifled Exeter once the first twenty minutes were past. Against Daggers we succeeded despite a packed defence, too. Very satisfying.
eelpie Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Terrific week, results wise. Have Saints ever had a better one in any league? However, we have a hard run of away games ahead, so lets enjoy today but be realistic of how tough it will be during the next few weeks. How we do aganst Charlton home and away will be the most important test of the season imo.
beatlesaint Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Interesting that we are yet to hear all this crap about dodgy pitches this season !! I think this is the sort of game we were drawing or losing last year with AP trotting out a bad pitch excuse and the players convinced they couldnt play on anything that didnt resemble a bowling green !
trousers Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 The problem with the D&R attacking at the end was the lack of pace up front as Alex and Guly had been taken off. Barnard is energetic but not quick, Lambert likewise. If we are going to get in front and defend a lead under pressure we need some lightning pace to bring on as it is difficult to break out if the defenders/midfield defend deep as it causes us tremendous problems especially with a goal line rooted keeper that allows the defence to back into the six yd area. Derry - nail on head. I was at the game and as soon as the Daggers midfielders/defenders didn't have to worry about handling the attacking threat of Guly and Chamberlain they went into attack mode and very nearly pulled off a 2-2 draw as a result. I'd wager that if we'd left Guly and Chamberlain on we wouldn't have conceded a goal or come close to throwing away the deservered 2 goal lead. Ok, there's a fine line between burning hi-tempo players out versus handing the attacking momentum to the opposition in the closing stages but we have a cup game on Saturday where we could have rested our impact players. Nigel 'got away with it' this time (just). But, that said, I understand why managers do it and more often than not it doesn't come back to bite them. At least I don't have to trim my finger nails this evening!

At least I don't have to trim my finger nails this evening! The 11 we had on the pitch at 2-0 were easily good enough to see the game out against a poor D&R side. I think it's more a case of we sat back and switched off rather than Nigel getting away with it.
PokingFun Posted 4 January, 2011 Posted 4 January, 2011 Then I suggest you go back and look at last year's results, pal... I have done so and our record is about as good as most other teams in the league last year even after the poor start when we were still building. We lost only 6 games away from home all season and only Charlton and Brighton lost less (5). Leeds and Norwich had more wins and went up but technically we finished within 3 points of Leeds who had a worse home record than us. To say we would not have won away today if Pardew was in charge is just plain wrong Alpine. How many wins away exactly do you expect any team to achieve?
stinhk Posted 4 January, 2011 Posted 4 January, 2011 I know it's off topic but sorry but I have to say it....amazed that some people are still getting the name of our manager wrong.
West End Saint Posted 4 January, 2011 Posted 4 January, 2011 Great result top away day very impressed how we battled on the worst pitch I have seen for a very long time it was narrow boggy & bumpy very hard to get the ball under control. 1 of those games that you have to win the right to play we had to dig in & fight Fonte was class Hammond did well as did chappers he is quality. There keeper was funny fair play to him 3 good goals Lambo's finish was top draw and great feet from Guly for his goal, Lallana must be the best player in the league. Good atmosphere enjoyed the day out COYS
SaintRobbie Posted 4 January, 2011 Posted 4 January, 2011 Happy Days! Even my prediction was right! We just need to keep plugging away now. Keep winning and we can win the League. I was impressed with Adkins interview on the Footy League show a few days ago saying he was only interested in winning the League... well he may be right.
torsaint Posted 4 January, 2011 Posted 4 January, 2011 Great banter with their keeper made it a great day out. Plus a win of course. Problem in last 10 minutes seemed to be Richardson who looked out of place in midfield and allowed them to push forward. Sure we'll learn from it. Need a pacy player in the transfer window to take some pressure off Alex Ox.
Village Saint Posted 4 January, 2011 Posted 4 January, 2011 Don't get me wrong, I think in previous seasons we would have drawn this game, maybe even lost. But Dagenham were quite possibly the worst team I've seen in any league. To let them back into the game was a little worrying. The whole point here I would have thought is that there was no panic and indeed we won the game. Dagenham had defended stoutly throughout the game but were very unadventurous with 1 up front. When they went 2-0 down they had no alternative but to lump it forward and get bodies in the box. Inevitably that is going to lead to the possibility of chances. They scored one and nearly got another when that free-kick came back off the bar (although it would have been criminal if that had gone in!) but they had no other clear chances (the back pass that hit the post was well covered by Kelvin!) and Saints defended stoutly in a way they wouldn't have done last year and then coolly went forward and scored again. Overall it summed up the difference between last year and this - in particular I compare it with the Wycombe game (although to be fair Dagenham were a bit better than Wycombe) that we got 1 point from last year.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 4 January, 2011 Posted 4 January, 2011 As pitches at small grounds go, I thought today's was in relatively good nick. A bit bobbly in places but nothing too drastic. Really?! I thought it was awful! Didn't look like there were any good patches and every pass along the ground bobbled like hell. Saying that I wasn't at Wycombe last year, but did most of the others.

Where I was standing (near the half way line at pitch level) the surface looked relatively OK....but I hadn't appreciated how torn up the central areas were which was much more apparaent from the high up TV camera viewpoint.
