I worked with Pete at the Salisbury Playhouse when he was in 'Scaramouche Jones'.

He was a really nice guy and during the afternoon he would stop and chat to me for ages.

He was a full-blown alocholic by then (this was 2003) and would drink guiness all day before he was on the in the evening from when the pubs opened in the morning. He also get them delivered to him backstage.

He died of cancer apparently but his drinking couldn't have helped.

When the run finished and I claned out his dressing room, I found an empty box that had once contained a blow-up sex-doll. Make of that what you will.

I did not know he was ill, but you are right it seems if they want to cover something up then they tend to use the cancer card!

R.I.P though whatever spin is put on this as he was a great actor.

Very sad to hear that. Still remember his terrific performance in The Usual Suspects as one of his best.

There was a lawyer.... Kobayashi

RIP Pete. A true great among British actors, you will be sadly missed.

He was great in Brassed off, I also recall him playing a great roll alongside Frank Finlay based around (quite aptly) a Funeral Parlour business.

Whoever he played he always made that character seem that he really was him.

RIP Pete

What a fabulous actor who took it seriously, whether on the stage or on screen. Spielberg once said he was the best actor in the world and with his range and application you can see why. Will be sadly missed but has left a terrific catalogue of fine acting for our enjoyment. RIP
