rocknrollman no2 Posted 2 January, 2011 Posted 2 January, 2011 This didnt affect me yesterday as i had a lift to the ground,but a lot of my friends had problems getting to the stadium. I think it was bad of the bus companies to not even run a sunday type service because of the footy.Surely somethiing could have been organised? Also one of my friends would like to say thankyou to the kind Saints fan who stopped and offered him a lift from the Townhill park area.Without this kind act,he would have missed half the game.Good to see Saints fans looking after their own.

Colinjb Posted 2 January, 2011 Posted 2 January, 2011 Dad nearly came unstuck when I dropped him back in Winchester. It was a sunday service so he had to walk back to Kings Worthy. (He wasn't prepared to pay 15 pounds or so for a taxi.) By the time he realised I was already past Oxford. It's all about the planning for these kind of things.

Several of us asked the bus drivers on Tuesday what was going to happen yesterday. One said he had no idea and the other said it was the first time that there would be no buses on New Year's Day.

If I had been relying on getting a bus yesterday I'm pretty confident I would've taken the small trouble of appraising the service available first.

Bus companies are licensed to provide a public service. To cancel all buses under circumstances like that is irresponsible and stupid and the responsible persons should hand their heads in shame. On the timetables it is printed that they run a sunday service on bank holidays. There is no mention that on some other days they run no service at all. I couldn't believe that this was possible in a civilized country. That I managed anyway is no reason not to be angry that the bus companies profits are more important than to provide a service. I am thinking about old people with few friends and family, and young women (I saw three of them waiting for non-existant buses) who were put at risk. Shame on those on this forum who are prepared to blame people who are reliant on public transport for what is really the total failure of business.

It was only when I got to the train station I was told it was a sunday service as it was it didn't make any difference. I know it was news years day but it wasn't actually a bank holiday was it?

Nothing on website or in the Echo. Pretty **** poor show! It was on their website but it was very well hidden. I took the train from Chandlers Ford but on the way to the station I saw four people waiting for a bus at the Central Precinct so I was able to tell them the sad news.

I only started this thread because my mate was so grateful that a total stranger stopped and gave him a lift,thus saving his day.Typical of some on here though with their "Should have known better attitude". Well i spoke to many fans yesterday who didnt know that no buses were running.Most thought there was a Sunday service.So this proves that the right information didnt get through to those who use the buses. In future i suggest that both the football club and the bus companies warn well in advance of a lack of service.

Certainly not saying it was the club's fault but they print a voucher entitling fans to discount bus travel!. Maybe the club could look into this as I would assume that they pay some kind of levy when agreeing the deal for every game of the season. The one time of the season when mrs h came with me to town on matchday as she wanted to spend her gift vouchers. Only a couple of shops were open but when I offered to buy her a match ticket she said she'd rather walk all the way back home as she'd left her knitiing at home. I have long thought that the club should consider running their own football specials from outlying areas directly to the ground but I suppose that would be a step down the road to having our own radio station again. as far as I know Charlton still run a FREE coach service around towns in Kent nicking valuable income from Gillingham and some of the more popular non-league outfits.

I've never tried to get the bus on NYD so I wouldn't know TBH, but the main point I was making was that on the bus stub of the ticket I'm sure the club could have just had "NO BUSES" or even just the XXX that you get on receipts. I'm not blaming anyone just thought it would have been a nice touch.
Hedgehog Posted 3 January, 2011 Posted 3 January, 2011 Think this may be the first time that buses didn't have at least a sunday service new years day. i know their drivers etc. should be able to enjoy a new years eve/day off, but when you are getting the government trying to get people to use public transport more, how can they when you can not rely on it when needed. not only football fans require the buses, but what about those wishing to visit relatives etc, those getting to work at the hospitals, visiting those in hospital. i am sure their are plenty of people working for the bus company may have wanted to work overtime, and phaps an extra 50p per ticket could be charged for journeys on such occasions. Phaps our crowd would have been larger if buses had been running.

Charlton service, The Valley Express, cost £7. It indeed ****es of the owners of Gillingham and Ebbsfleet and runs as far south as Worthing, it is a good service.

At first I felt the exact opposite to his views on things, then I read this thread and quickly realised he was right. No buses on a bank holiday? Goodbye cruel world.
