What the f**k is Brightons problem

Who cares whether Brighton like us or dislike us? I guess when you are rivals then you don't usually say anything nice about the other side.

Personally I would like them and Bournemouth to join us (hopefully!) in getting promoted.

Agree with that!

What are you basing that on ?

Both Cardiff and Norwich (by quite a margin) have had higher average attendances so far this season.

I think its a fair point, even if it was made by Dune.

TBF, Norwich is quite a way up their and Cardiff shouldn't even be in the English leagues, if they or Swansea get promoted it will be an absolute joke.

Hardly a geographical rivalry for Palace tho', they must have a dozen other teams within 10 miles of Selhurst, Brighton are only a rival to them because they were both top dogs in the third Division back in 1977ish and were battling each other to win that league.

Their more obvious rivals are the skates, similar distance, both south coast with some fans living in each others faces. Chichester, Bognor, etc. probably should be Brighton as they're in Sussex but skates can be found living amongst them.

Maybe the bluefew's hoolie reputation is a bit fierce for 'our friends' down the coast, you'd certainly think they'd be concentrating on the skates as they're playing them in the cup next week rather than worrying about us.

I'll say this for 'em tho', they couldn't 'arf run fast back in the 70s/80s ;)

Exactly

they are nearer to the skates and scared off them

agree about them running fast, they used to be out of the goldstone and across that park opposite like a skate on benefit day

I remember that they didn't want to dance with Lipsy and his short scaffold pole way back then.

Palace are one our nearest rivals only 40 miles up the road easy access on train. We scored a penalty against them in 1976 fa cup was diisallowed and retaken and we missed. Alan mullery was outraged and went to war with palace fans which was never forgoten by them and has developed over the years. Palace hate us as much as we hate them.

****. You could have won the FA cup that year, I guess. I wonder who did win the FA cup in '76. I'll have to Google it.

This is good. I think Adkins should show it to the players.

I sense fear in Brighton. I honestly thought we'd be pushed to hit anything other than the play-offs this year after APs departure, but I have had a big wave of New Year optimism since the last two games and 8 goals.

When I read stuff like this it makes me realise that others fear us, we CAN win the league... and everyone else knows it!

I like the Brighton fans.

Apparently it is arrogant of us to suggest that we might catch them, but not arrogant of them to say that we definitely won't.

I feel a bit sorry for them to be honest, their "style" of play is awful to watch, tapping it around the back four, timewasting, niggly fouling, waving imaginary cards. Effective, yes, but easy on the eye, no. Not my cup of tea. They play like Poyet did as a player, and I didn't like him either.

I was at that game - it was a total non event with neither side attempting to score. It's always been my opinion that it was a 'fix'.

One of the best 0- 0's ive been too. We ripped them a new arse espeacially in the first half.

How you suggest it was a fix is beyong me

Just been speaking to a good friend who is a Palace fan (very nice man, high IQ) and he assures me that the real rivalry is between the Seaweed and Fulham. This is due to Fulham's use of the nickname 'the Cottagers' which historically has been attributed to the Seaweed. Apparently, this issue is a very sore point...

So who are the bell-ends now acting like idiots over on their board then ??

It's funny that we get all surprised and shocked to learn that other clubs don't like us, then we invade their fans forums acting like *****s.

I too was at the game and go with Smirking & Gemmel's recollection.

Tony Funnell hit the post in the first half, no doubt he intended that rather than scoring.

My favourite Seaweed memory is the FA cup match in 1986 when we beat them 2-0. We took about 6000 down there and I will never forget the sheer terror on the faces of the Seaweed fans and the local constabulary who were clearly expecting a few happy clappers with rattles turning up. We were given the corner and uncovered stand opposite the dug outs and throughout the game much verbal hatred was directed towards their substitute arch skate tosser Biley (in the twilight of his career), to a level where he disappeared up the tunnel (excuse the pun) at one point after arguing with his manager when he threatened to bring him on in the second half. After the game there was an large scale (though minor) altercation on the way back to the station in a public park which saw the Seaweed running away like so many mincing Linford Christies and a belated cavalry charge by Sussex's finest, who had arrived too late for effective crowd control with Saints fans exiting en masse through a hedge.

The current vitriol from the Seaweed is obviously fear based what with them in a position that they could never have imagined at the start of the season. We shouldn't deny them their moment in the sun, rather look on them as a metaphorical Jimmy Krankie - a camp, comedic irritation that you wouldn't pay to watch through choice...

Me too.

In that lower paddock section right behind the goal. Bailey dropped a clanger right in front of us.

Will get ITN out to try and find the game.

Old age must be getting the better of both of us.

It was Nov 1988, and Jim Leighton was in goal (Bailey was still sh1t mind!!!!).

Went 1-0 up after 7 mins with this goal Le Tiss equalised late on to earn a 2-2 draw.

The Colin Clarke double was in January 1988 (courtesy of ITN).

Used to enjoy the stops in Banbury, remember bumping in to United on their way back from losing at Bournemouth in the Cup at some point (twas interesting!!!!).

Banbury always used to be interesting, either with the locals or other teams stopping off for a drink. Was there a pub called The Cross??? and another called the Three Pidgeons?? Sure the Cross was where we used to drink.

I remember that game. That was the worst Albion performance of the season, and the writing was on the wall the minute Eric Young kindly escorted Glen Cockeril into our six yard box. We were never in the game after that. Bender (the OP) is my brother, and he didn't go. He was probably still a Man United fan at the time.

Eh? Don't remember that. Most people wouldn't even know that Southampton even had a firm. ???

Anyway, this really is a very embarrassing thread. Personally I don't consider Southampton fans to be "arrogant", any more than most of our fans are "deluded". Brighton/Southampton on the whole has been a reasonably friendly rivalry down the years. Clearly you're a bigger club by most yardsticks but next season the gap will hopefully be much smaller with both teams in the Championship and with Albion finally in a proper home.

Bender, you are a complete clown for taking that bet on our site. Albion will *easily* average over 14,000 next season - no question about it. They might slump the following year if we have a bad season, but we're nailed on for average gates of over 17,000 I should think.

I've got to say personally i think it's fantastic that it's Brighton, Saints and Bournemouth at the top of the league at the moment. Admittedly i'd prefer us top but if you'd asked me at the start of the season the three i wanted going up then those would've been my choices.

One question of Falmer though for the Seagulls on here, are you happy with the out of town location? Personally i couldn't think of anything worse than having Saints in an out of town location. To me it rips a large chunk of the spirit out of the club to do that and makes it all a little more bland and corporate (and don't get me started on things like hotels and the rest attached).

Keeping my fingers crossed that the south coast run will continue, though obviously with us top, since from what i've seen at SMS this season Brighton have been by far the best team in this division.

Mind you it does look like things are changing this end of the coast so you may find it gets a bit nervy for you in the next few months (wishful thinking?).

Agree with most of this, I wouldn't put it past 'BHA' on here and a couple of 'Saints' posters on NSC being one of the same, namely a mischievious little skate stirring it up. They all make so many obviously incorrect and stupid statements it's got to be a wind-up.

I'd also say Brighton are very likely fill their new stadium fairly easily, particularly if they go up and I believe they're offering adult Season Tickets in advance for something like £370, not bad for what will probably be Championship footie. They were capable of 33,000 at the old Goldstone the last time they were up there. Brighton 'and Hove' and a relatively unchallenged area for a 40-mile Sussex radius suggests there's plenty out there for them to entice.

Although I think 'Simster' has selective memory if he really can't remember a few of the old 'Warrens' breaking through that barrier to send their North Stand boys scampering down the terrace, it was the league game 77/78. The Seagulls were a little light on their toes all day that day!

Your out of town question is a very good one. In the long run, it could prove to be a massive problem. Right now, with Albion not having had a proper home for 14 years, people are all too happy to talk about trying out the various methods of getting too and from the ground. Lots of people will hope to drink in central Brighton followed by an easy bus or train ride. Others will happily try out the bars at the ground. One thing is for sure, people will take a while to figure out their new routine. It won't be as simple as a few beers then a walk to the ground. The biggest issue is that tickets will not be pay on the gate - I think we're all going to be expected to carry smart cards around! But these issues are not insurmountable as long as the club is run professionally, and the signs are good:

The club are aiming for high (16,000) season ticket sales. They expect to hit this target and I think they will. Prices are reasonable and importantly, you can pay for them interest free over 12 months via direct debit, which I think is hugely impressive as that will cost quite a bit to administer. We've already sold out of 2,500 "1901 membership" season tickets, aimed at the corporate sector and wealthier fans. To be honest, Albion will need to have a higher season ticket base than most because of the difficulty in attracting walk-up trade (as I say, the ground is tricky to get to, and you cannot pay on the gate).

The club is also doing a fine job rebuilding our fan base, which has skipped an entire generation because of inadequate facilities. We now have 11,000 junior seagulls and the freebies they give away to the kids simply beggars belief. Free match tickets, free Albion first team shirt (!!!!), as well as all the usual gubbins like signed photos, free rucksacks, pens, pencils, and a free xmas party attended by three of four first teamers.

Although I think 'Simster' has selective memory if he really can't remember a few of the old 'Warrens' breaking through that barrier to send their North Stand boys scampering down the terrace, it was the league game 77/78. The Seagulls were a little light on their toes all day that day!
Five years before my time but I thought he was talking about the 1986 cup game where that certainly didn't happen. But nobody ever mentions this "trouble" in 1978, unlike the Spurs home game in that season which apparently had the worst trouble ever seen in Brighton. We had 34,000 for that one and the place was wrecked with fights everywhere.

Anyway, I too am happy at the current top 3 and in that order, but in truth would prefer Charlton to be promoted than Bournemouth. Charlton is always a great away day for us as we tend to fill their away end. Bournemouth is far less convenient for us. I don't really mind though.

Well, I was also at the game but I go along with PaulGilchrist_76. I left the ground very disappointed that we made no attempt to win the game to take the league title. A rumour went round the Milton near the end that Bolton were losing and that we were champions anyway; a rumour that turned out to be false - wonder who started that.

Nobody ever mentions it because your lot didn't exactly come out of it with flying colours, probably best forgotten. It was the first game of the New Year and many had been in town from first thing there was trouble down in the town and then afterwards your lot came across the park as we came out and quickly done an about turn!

I maybe wrong but I'm almost sure your biggest attendance that season was against us, if I remember correctly loads of Spurs turned up without tickets when you played them and they're the ones that caused "the worst trouble ever seen in Brighton".
