dune Posted 29 December, 2010 Share Posted 29 December, 2010 I'd have imagined a private estate agent/letting agency would be the way to go. If it was me i'd follow the crowd and use whoever has the most business because that would suggest they are trusted.

Dr Who? Posted 29 December, 2010 Share Posted 29 December, 2010 I rent my property out in Southampton. I used to do it through an agency, but they messed me around so much and do very little for their cut. So I piad them out of the contract and rent out my property off my own back and take the full rent amount rather than losing £200 a month to the agency. Never used a housing agency but have heard that if you get in contact with the council, they will rent out the property and you get the money month even if they do not manage to find anyone. So this is another good way of doing it. I would advise never to use an agency!!
dune Posted 29 December, 2010 Share Posted 29 December, 2010 Dr Who have you ever had problem tennants and if a self letting landlord did would it have been preferable to have employed a lettings agency?
Dr Who? Posted 30 December, 2010 Share Posted 30 December, 2010 Yes we had a problem tennant and it did not make it any better having a agency in place. it could have been the agency, but they really let the tennant get away with so much. Not had a problem with any of the tennant (2 of them) since dumping the agency. Now I am not losing £200 a month for an agency to do nothing, and have been able to do up the property with the extra monies that I get. New Bathroom was the latest thing last month. The whole house has had a make over in the last couple of years, which is good for the tennant and good for me as the owner of the property. hamster Posted 30 December, 2010 Share Posted 30 December, 2010 Not sure if the scheme is still in operation but the General used to have a kind of 'preferred landlord' scheme a while back, for their student nurses iirc. The Uni have a scheme http://www.southampton.ac.uk/accommodation/privaterented/landlords.shtml but not sure you'd fit the catchemnt aream maybe call them as they'd be well placed to advise on the SGH area perhaps.
