St Chalet Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Comments here please. Sounds like a great game and with Swindon goal we could end the day 5th.
Saint Without a Halo Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Great game great result and 10 points in the prediction league too! cant be bad! onwards and upwards
saint lard Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Well done today, good result. Will refrain from getting too carried away however.
doddisalegend Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Well done Nigel and the boys! I was pretty unhappy after the Brentford game but fairs fair seems like Nigel got it spot on today and the boys played like we know they can. More of the same at the next match please (one I will be at).
alpine_saint Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Well done today, good result. Will refrain from getting too carried away however. Indeed. On paper this is a massive shot-in-the-arm to our hopes for promotion, but we all know it will be p*ssed up against the wall against D & R next week.
SOTONS EAST SIDE Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Good come back from last game. Hope we can push on and secure at least a play off place. Lets see if we move for some players in the Jan transfer window!!! COYR's.
Liquidshokk Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Great game to listen to here in south of France. Wish my seat wasn't empty in front of such a good performance but very chuffed nonetheless.
Hamilton Saint Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Fantastic win. Very important that Lambert scored from open play. Merrington had particular praise for Lallana and Chamberlain. Oh, happy day!
Alain Perrin Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 I'm off to text Solent to ask why Bournmouth get less coverage than Saints when they are above them in the table...... oh......
Lighthouse Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 2 seasons in a row I've planned to go to this fixture but been stuck at work and missed the game. In contrast, I just made it to the Brenford game a couple of weeks ago. C'est la vie! I can still bask in the glory of 3 points.
moon monkey Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Unfortunatly an unwanted visitor in the shape of a f***ing scouser director of football was watching mr chamberlain
trousers Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Unfortunatly an unwanted visitor in the shape of a f***ing scouser director of football was watching mr chamberlain Cortese went on record a few weeks ago to say he wouldn't be sold in January.
View From The Top Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Nailed on win due to my apathy and CAB attitude to driving down South. This attitude is likely to still be in place on the 1st so another 3pts then as well!
Thedelldays Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 From about 20 mins on we completely dominated the game.. They looked dangerous on the break through out but we over powered them.. Some of the play in the second half was superb.. Against the team that started the day 3rd in the league.. The whole team played very well... Even morgan.. How ever.. Guly is not a footballer.. He is awful Brilliant game and what a way to set ourselves up for an automatic promotion push in the new year
Thedelldays Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Also heard from a few people at the ground that Liverpool want chamberlain and will offer him £1m signing on fee and around £20k a week.. Also they will loan him back to us for the rest of the season.. Anyone else heard any rumours?
itchen_dan Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Welcome back Mr Rickie Lambert. +1. Looked absolutely brilliant today. Great strike on the turn and half volley. I've slated him a lot this season but today he was brilliant. He's slowly getting his confidence back and slowly getting back to the player that we know he can be!!
Saint Charlie Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Guly may have missed some chances but his link play around the box was good. Chamberlain's best game for us I reckon - everyone will want him. Best moment apart from the goals: Jaidi's backheel...class!
sadoldgit Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Excellent result. Hopefully we can push on and keep this going now. Pleased for Lambert.
saint_stevo Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Excellent game. Excellent performance. Lambert must be on a diet as he looked decidedly slim today, and his perfrmance was very good, great goal and good link up play. Guly could have had 6 on another day and whatever people say he gets in some great positions and a good pass for Oxo's goal. Lallana could and possibly should have had 2 himself!
SOTONS EAST SIDE Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Lambert nearly back on fire, GOD HELP LEAGUE 1 WHEN HE IS!! He's got some catching up to do.
Toomer Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Very open and entertaining game it could have been 2 all after about 15 mins four very good goals, I said at half time we need another two to make sure of this one as they were still a threat at that time. Their M.O.M was their keeper if not for him we could have had another 3 or 4.
S-Clarke Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Brilliant game, it started off at such a high tempo with both sides coming close to scoring. (we should have been 1 up before they got their 1st) We took about 5mins to settle once they'd scored, but after that we just bombarded them and quite frankly they couldn't deal with our attack, especially lambert who was back to his best and deservingly man of the match. It wasn't just his goal (which was a brilliant hit) but it was his general play, holding up, winning the header, passing it on...he was brilliant and lead the game for us from the front. Guly was frustrating but i didn't think he was awful, he just makes the wrong deicions when he's in the box (but he's never been a natrual striker afaik) Chambo was great and i really hope he stays as this is the only place he's going to get the football he needs, in a consistent winning team week-in, week-out. Look at Shelvey who went from Charlton to Liverpool - does he even play? completely forgotten about now. Same with Delph who left leeds for Villa. Ok i know all players are different but i truly believe he'd be slowing down his progress by moving now, I'm not mad enough to think we'll keep him forever but at least 18 more months isn't too much to ask is it? Good to see Jaidi score, thought he had a good game today, really strong up against their strike force which is pretty powerful. Hope we sign Chappers....he has so much energy and drive through he middle of the park and is too good for this level IMO, so we'd been picking up a complete gem. We really need to follow this up with a win against Exeter though, then we will really be cooking.
Um Bongo Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 How ever.. Guly is not a footballer.. He is awful He was one of our best players. In fact, I would even say he was our MOTM. All he needed was a goal to top it off. Yes, first half he had chances, however he never stopped running, despite having the **** kicked out of him by their number 8. Could have easily been 2/3 down, how they missed the open goal i'll never know. Their first goal shouldn't have stood, the free kick was taken nowhere near where the 'foul' was. Both Fonte and Jaidi looked like they were on another planet. We finally woke up and we battered them. The period from 20-35mins is the best I have seen us play this season. Lambert looked back on form and a well taken goal, though i'm not sure if the keeper helped it in. Lovely move then set up AOC, who's finish was superb. From then it was never in any doubt, Jaidi finally woke up second half and was outstanding, a well taken goal and rock at the back. Chaplow get's another goal and will be signed up next week. Very good performance, but we can still give more! Forgot about the goal line clearance in the first few minutes from their defender - Outstanding.
Rut Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Beating a promotion rival 4-1 is a great result. I can easily see Saints winning their next 5 league games. Here's to a great 2011.
bpsaint Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Agree with Thedelldays, from about 20 minutes there was only going to be one winner today. I put our slow start down to not having played competitive football for over 2 weeks, once we got into the swing of things we were totally unplayable. Good to see Lambert put in a performance like that of last season, hopefully that goal will be a springboard for him. Credit to Fonte and Jaidi at the back again, whilst Jaidi may not have the legs any more his aerial ability and man marking skills are invaluable in this league. Struggled to understand why Barnard remained on the bench for the whole of the match, thought Guly was woeful once again, one of the most frustrating strikers i've seen in a Saints shirt since Ricardo Fuller.
NY Saint Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Great result today against a legitimate rival after a lengthy delay of playing for a weeks. I heard Lambert's demeanor and confidence appeared to change with his goal, let's hope he has a second half of the season much like his full season last year. Paul Walsh, I think, was commenting on the game for Sky Radio and suggested Oxo's goal was another peach - couldn't really tell what happened though as his ability to describe games is akin to Alpine's ability to be positive, which brings me to: The shine was taken off the game a little by negativity in the match thread and Alpine in particular again. Sadly although Alpine is on my ignore list, everyone's else responses quoting him aren't and like watching a car accident I ended up reading his posts. Adrian's response whilst a little harsh is not without warrant.
Jimmy_D Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Really really enjoyed that! Nice to end the year in the play-off places, and potentially within striking distance of top two. Starting to think with the January Transfer Window here for us to strengthen, Oxo going from strength to strength, Lambert getting back to his frightening best, the class of Lallana, and having kept up due to teams around us slipping up, we're perfectly placed now to push through the second half of the season and make a bid for the title.
buctootim Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 thought Guly was woeful once again, one of the most frustrating strikers i've seen in a Saints shirt since Ricardo Fuller. That'll be the premiership striker Ricardo Fuller?
bpsaint Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 That'll be the premiership striker Ricardo Fuller? Yep thats the one,the same Fuller who was absolute dog**** when he played for us.
saint_stevo Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Oxo and the 70minute calf cramp.....get that man (boy) some SALT!
SuperSAINT Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Also heard from a few people at the ground that Liverpool want chamberlain and will offer him £1m signing on fee and around £20k a week.. Also they will loan him back to us for the rest of the season.. Anyone else heard any rumours? Comolli from Liverpool WAS at the game today. Also, I'm not 100% sure I heard this right, but I think I heard Nigel Adkins say that Barnard has had his hernia op and is now 100% ready to fire on all cylinders. Great win today boys. Fantastic to get ourselves back into contention.

He's not a natural striker though so it's not fair to expect him to perform like a natural finisher (i'm still not sure why he's being played as a striker tbh - behind the strikers is the best place for him). He runs his heart out for the team though and i thought he worked well with Lambo.
buctootim Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Yep thats the one,the same Fuller who was absolute dog**** when he played for us. No he wasnt. He was injured when first signed and not that mobile, and a few people never gave him a chance because he signed from Pompey. When fit at the end of the season he scored six goals in as many games. Didnt go today so cant comment on his performance, but Guly is one of our better players overall. I hope we keep him.
Weston Saint Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 (edited) I am glad to see a few on here recognise that Guly had a decent game. He moved about, chased and although he failed to score, oneheader in particular, he was in the right place at the right time more than once. Goals will come. Hope we hold on to him. Chaplow is like a Jack Russell, always on the go,biting at the legs of the opposition. Good goal as well. Trust we will sign him up. Lambert looked back to his old self and great to see him score from open play. Chamberlain had a good game as well bearing in mind he is still a youngster. Must keep him Lallana had one of those busy games but was not likely to score today. It was one of those days but again he was creating the chances and on another day he would have had at least two. First 20 minutes, particularly after they scored I had that sinking feeling. Suddenly Lambert equalizes and the energy in the team stepped up a few gears. We never really looked back after that. For me, man of the match was Jaidi. Never missed a header and a great headed goal. Closely followed by Lambert for being back to his old self. Looking forward to Saturday now. bpsaint Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Sorry but Fuller was one of the laziest disinterested strikers i've ever seen in a Saints shirt. People didn't care that he came from Pompey, people cared that he didn't give a damn.
Wes Tender Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 At the start of the match there were certainly some glimpses of why Huddersfield had beaten us a short while back so convincingly. In fact they could have been 2 up within about 16 minutes, had not their player shot wide when it would have been much easier to have scored from a few feet out, the goal at his mercy. It must be one of their misses of the season, the sort of thing that would appear on a football bloopers video. Had they established that margin so early, hard to say what our reaction would have been. As it turned out though, it could have ended at 8-3 to us, as we also had some gilt edged chances, with De Prado in particular being wasteful and some of our other shots were also straight at their keeper when shooting either side of him would have produced some extra goals. But with Lallana giving a man of the match performance on one flank and Chamberlain excellent on the other flank, we gave Huddersfield plenty of problems, especially as our two CBs raided fiorward often to put additional presure on their defence. Jaidi was unstoppable for his headed goal, he was really up for it today. Fonte was his usually composed self, winning most of the stuff in the air and distributing the ball out of defence well. It was good to have Harding back at LB and he didn't disappoint, allowing little past him and foraging forward with some good link-up play with Lallana. Our left flank in particular was a thorn in their side all match. The previous match against them appeared to show them as wanting it more than us, but this match, we gave as good as we got all over the pitch and gained our reward. Schneiderlin and Hammond were solid in midfield and when Schneiderlin had to go off before he gained his second yellow, Chaplow was a terrific replacement, full of industry and purpose, his goal a fitting reward for his wholehearted efforts. Please can we buy him, Nicola? Lambert's goal was a stonker, hit with venom from out of nowhere. It visibly gave his confidence a boost. Let's hope that he now goes on a run, back to the form he showed last season. The cancelled matches could be a blessing in disguise, as even without them we have stayed in touch and it is quite possible that had we played on Boxing Day, we might not have looked as fresh as we did today, whereas after a pacy beginning, Huddersfield began to flag later on and their confidence will have suffered from a second defeat in a couple of days. We now are close to the January transfer window and can play those two postponed matches maybe with some new quality players to strengthen a gap or two in the squad. So we have a good springboard to elbow our way up the league and ought to have put the frighteners on Exeter for Saturday with this performance. But this is Southampton, so who knows? But I trust that if we play as well as we did today, we ought to beat any team from this dvision.
Dan Johnson Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Shocking performance today, GULY was ****!!! Lallana couldnt hit a chuffing barn door!!! SO HACKED OFF PS: I had £10 on 5-1 ;-)
LGTL Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 1st half was one of the best I can remember at St Mary's, great stuff. 2nd half we never really looked in any trouble. Keeping Lallana is an absolute priority for me, more so then Chamberlain. When he plays well, we play well.
DG Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Missed a few early chances then they capitalised on a decent spell with a goal i thought here we go again, but fair play to the lads they fought back and played some outstanding stuff today and created so many chances. As for Guly in the 1st half he got into some decent positions but just seems to take too long before shooting. maybe just needs more games to get a bit sharper?
Wes Tender Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 1st half was one of the best I can remember at St Mary's, great stuff. 2nd half we never really looked in any trouble. Keeping Lallana is an absolute priority for me, more so then Chamberlain. When he plays well, we play well. Agreed. Anybody down here scouting for Chamberlain couldn't fail to have taken notice of the class that Lallana showed. Chamberlain might have greater potential eventually, but Lallana is pretty well the finished article already and would I'm sure still produce the goods in the Premiership.
LostBoys Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Always good to win against one of the better sides especially after missing some sitters - 8 3 was a fair reflection. Onward and upward.
SOTONS EAST SIDE Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Unfortunatly an unwanted visitor in the shape of a f***ing scouser director of football was watching mr chamberlain Well i hope he tells them to go ferk off, as we dont need their money. More like they need our's. And the same goes for Lallana too!!! LISTEN YOU SO CALLED BIG BOYS!! WE'RE NOT SKINT ANYMORE SO POKE YOUR DERISORY OFFERS UP YOUR ARSE!!!!
Nexstar Posted 28 December, 2010 Posted 28 December, 2010 Fantastic result. Both teams started the game playing some very nice football, with multiple chances at both ends. Cracking first half and we managed to shut them out near the end of the first 45 so we deserved the lead. Second half we completely shut them out and Jaidi and Fonte were fantastic at the back. Lallana and chamberlain were immense on the wings, with Hammond solid in the middle. Lambert was finally back to his best and MOTM today for me, as he didn't put a foot wrong and scored a cracker. Guly was USELESS again and Barnard probably would have had a hattrick in his place. Please DON'T sign him!
