Jason Puncheon

A guess we will wait and see Adkins put him straight back in the team and by the sounds of it had a decent game and possibly should have had a goal if oxo had given him the ball. He is still only 24 and I think he has a chance on Tuesday if he gets a game to prove that he wants to play in league one for the moment. My mate works up at Millwall and said that Puncheon looked a class above their midfield and got 5 goals in 7 games. Adkins will do the right thing with him and I trust him to make the call whether to keep him or not.

I thought Puncheon was poo earlier in the season & was not worthy of his place in the side. Today, he played well & as long as his attitude is spot on he can stay if he is also prepared to fight for his place in the side.

Mind you I am wondering if Adkins played him today & will for the rest of the month to keep AOC out of the spotlight???

uh oh, is alpine wrong again ;)

In fairness I don't think many would have predicted Puncheon coming back, Adkins starting him and then the excellent, hard working team performance that the player put in.

One of the many highlights of the afternoon for me.

Puncheon was superb today and it says a lot for the character of the guy to come back in and play so well knowing that some of our less intelligent fans would have ready to criticise any mistake.

The Northam seemed quick to get behind him, which was pleasing.

Adkins is a trained and experienced Sports psychologist, something that shouldn't be underestimated or forgotten when thinking about how he deals with players. Whether or not we agree or understand what he does and why he does it, I'm sure he knows what he is doing and which players need a gentle push in the right direction.

This. NA sent him out on loan and then, after the Exeter game, when questioned about transfer activity and, in particular Puncheon, he replied " He's our boy, let's get him back and see where we go from there". Playing him today Cup tied him, not an error on NA's part but a statement of intent. He will work on and with Puncheon. NA will improve him, of that I am sure and today was just a taster of what JP is capable of. He played well and was busy all the time.

I was also very surprised by that. I have misjudged many of you. Well done. I am not sure if he heard the backing, especially the Puncheon song, but he certainly must have thought he might have got some stick but didn't. Back slaps all round.

The transfer window is still open for a few weeks. Puncheon may have come back with a clean slate determined to have a go, or it could be that the club and player are simply keeping him in the shop window.

I think it is far too early for the smug "told you so" comments emanating from the likes of NickG after one match. Lets see if he maintains his form.

I think the shop window is more likely than a sudden injection of team spirit. Having said that if he has decided to start afresh and is going to give his best and toe the line he would be a big asset giving us cover for several positions. He made a great lung bursting run to get up alongside Chamberlain and create an open goal, only messed up by Chamberlain going for unlikely glory rather than looking up and giving Puncheon an easy third goal.

Indeed, the next few weeks will be very revealing.

A minor ITK from me on Punch direct from the dressing room.

Post match in the channon suite we had the pleasure of listening to Lee Barnatd being interviewed.

One question related to Punch's contribution; Lee said and I quote "we were all surprised to see him come back"

If his inclusion was just to put him in the shop window and let others know that he IS NOT going to The Den then well done Nigel. If, as I suspect, he's been told to show us what he can do (and unquestionably did) as 1st choice then it is Alex O-C who now has to show how he can deal with the disappointment of playing second fiddle; far more influential than young AOC.

Whatever I have a sneaky that we'll cash in on the young gun and invest it in the squad.

NB

I am not in any way ITK, just more perceptive andf in tune with phsycology than everyone else. (joke)

I agree alpine. Do you not ever think however that sometimes some of your rather judgemental and dismissive comments come too soon? Sadly you attract the replies because of the way in which you often state things yourself. 'Complete fantasy ********' for example?

Anyway, everyone's a winner if he stays and continues like he played today.

Adkins was desperate to rest Chamberlain so Puncheon was the natural replacement. Nothing ot do with shop windows from the clubs point of view. On Puncheons side he showed he is a professional and played his usual game.

His usual Millwall game I'd say.

Just left of centre seems to suit him down to the ground.

The question is, can we play with two behind the strikers? The ansewer clearly is yes, yes we can.

What he needs to learn and accept is that it's horses for courses and sometimes we need to overcome hurdles and sometimes we are on the flat.

What I meant by that was showing a tremendous first touch, silky in posesion, a very languide style, better on the ball than off, poor tackling, workrate to find space, but maybe not quite as much when tackling back, some wonderful weighted passes and some intecepted overambitous passes. I didn't think he was a million times better than his last game for us, but I didn't think he was playing that bad when we shipped him out. Poor early on in the season, but IMO muc improved once he started passing quicker (after getting some stick from fans). I'm still not convinced he will stay, although I don't think Millwall can afford him.

I do find it funny that Adkins saw punch as surplus to requirements and seemingly didnt rate him but his goal fest in the millwall side has made Adkins do a u-turn... Like a kid not wanting to play with a certain toy until some other kid picks it up and finds it fun.... Think he'll stay with a little bit of ass kissing.

I don't think that is the case at all. I think Puncheon's attitude, not his ability was the reason Adkins shipped him out. As others have now said, this could have been a master stroke.

Fair play to Puncheon, who I thought had a good game yesterday. If has come back to knuckle down and work for the squad, and accept that he might not always be first choice, it could be like another new signing.

I think the main difference at Saints in recent weeks is that we no longer have a "first XI" and some subs, we have a first team squad of about 18 (Nige calls them his group of players). They won't all get to play in every game, but they will all feature significantly in the campaign.

Punch has a guaranteed place in that group, if he wants to take it. I hope he does.

If that gets him playing well and gets us promoted that will be worth it don't you think???

Its called man management - some need an arm round them , some need a kick up the arse!

Adkins has never not rated Punch. He shipped him out to get regular game time and improve his attitude and it appears to have worked.

It'll be great if we keep hold of him and he continues his good form.

Even if we are intending to sell him, this helps with negotiating. Adkins made a statement yesterday that Puncheon is a first team player - not someone who is going to be sat here waiting for an offer. If Millwall thought he had burnt his bridges and could get him cheap they are wrong!

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett has hopes of signing Southampton winger Jason Puncheon.

For their FA Cup defeat to Birmingham City, the Lions boss said his side had been hampered by the absence of Jason Puncheon, who returned to Southampton this week after scoring five goals in a month-long loan spell, and admits he wants the midfielder back at the New Den.

The winger has also attracted interest from Newcastle United.

"Jason scored five goals in seven matches and he is under contract at Southampton," Jackett said.

"We are keen on Jason. We'll see what comes about in terms of who's out there. He is still a target."

My personnal opinion is that Chamberlain is the more likely player to go (Arsenal ??)

In that case, it would be vital that Puncheon remains IMHO

  • 7 months later...

Apparently proposed move is a loan til January with a fee agreed for a permenant move.

They're not sure whether the paperwork went through on time, might not be confirmed (or otherwise) until tomorrow morning.

Part of me does find it quite funny he might have to play a few more months with the youth team.
