Smirking_Saint Posted 21 December, 2010 Share Posted 21 December, 2010 No I think I would show that a lot of people on here are clueless, not that I would need Puncheon to do well to conclude it. We have Fuller and a host of others performing in the Premiership week in and week out. Welcome to the real world
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 21 December, 2010 Share Posted 21 December, 2010 Let's not forget that it wasn't the fans who set him out on loan. Just because he's a good player doesn't mean he was playing well for us. Fwiw I'd rather keep him but it's pretty clear he's never going to be happy playing under NA. Fan The Flames Posted 21 December, 2010 Share Posted 21 December, 2010 now if that happened and he did OK it would be tangible proof that you can be too good to play well in the third division. This is a 'too cold to snow' statement, received wisdom that has no truth in it what so ever.

And despite popular opinion, he was given more than enough of a fair chance.
Saint_clark Posted 21 December, 2010 Share Posted 21 December, 2010 Perhaps Crosby thought Punch wasn't doing enough defensively, defending as a team is one of his hobby horses apparently. Mind you given S****horpe's defensive record last season (and again this) perhaps he is not wrong. Possibly, but since Adkins came in Puncheon actually was tracking back and generally performing better than under Pardew. If he wasn't happy about being told to defend more then surely he wouldn't have bothered to implement it on the pitch?
captainchris Posted 21 December, 2010 Share Posted 21 December, 2010 Are you mental? we only payed £250k for him! How come his value has shot up by at least £1.25m considering everyone on here thinks he is s***?!! And he truly is...........sh-te !

Colinjb Posted 22 December, 2010 Share Posted 22 December, 2010 I believe Puncheon has premiership ability. If he really wants a football career a move to a club there will sort him out. If he just wants the trappings of fame, he will become another 'if only.' I expect to see him washed up within the next 4 years. Attempting to fight his way back up the ladder for Havant and Waterlooville, occasionally showing talent but otherwise looking dissinterested. His bad attitude will be his downfall. shurlock Posted 22 December, 2010 Share Posted 22 December, 2010 Puncheon flatters to deceive - if we can get rid, make a tidy profit and find a proper winger, then fantastic. I definitely subscribe to the view that some players play better in higher divisions but this does not apply to puncheon. Its not like he set argyle alight in the CCC; moreover the players that do perform better at a higher level do so because their game -passing and moving, good awareness etc- depends on having talented players around them who are on the same wavelength (papa is a good example: there were many times last season when he would have been through on goal rather flagged offside if one of our players had had the nous to play the ball early). This is not puncheon's game - he rarely sticks his head up and looks for a pass etc. He likes to go it alone -to receive the ball and run with it (though this means little more than cutting inside). His game is not about having the right team 'fit' - so his stock rises or falls depending on the team-mates. His form is likely to getter worse, not better as he goes up the leagues as he get's sussed out by better defenders. He's like a poor man's walcott without the pace. And despite popular opinion, he was given more than enough of a fair chance. This is, to a degree, quite unfair. I agree that for a good while he wasn`t very good for us and this, combined with his Skate history, made him a real pantomime villain for many of our fans, but I seem to remember that his form for the few months before he left us was good and he scored quite a few goals. I think that the tide was just beginning to turn for him just as he left.

You are not the first person to have said this recently, It's only since he is gone that it's everyone elses fault he was constantly offside! Many did: am not saying papa was faultless, especially at the beginning but quite a number of runs would have been sublimely timed had the ball been played first-time/delivered quicker. Not faulting others -indeed, its papa's fault for not adjusting his own game- just saying more of those runs would have gone in his favour with a better team around him. Just look at NA's mixed efforts to get us to play a passing game: too many of our players, especially our deadly duo in midfield, tend to dwell on the ball and prefer to go sideways. That is not how i remember it, I remember loads complaining about him always being offside and not understanding the rule. His stock has risen dramaticaly since he left. Nostalga is a great thing, but quite simply he was not as good as most on here think.
SuperSAINT Posted 22 December, 2010 Share Posted 22 December, 2010 Apparantly HUll have had a bid for Charlie Austin turned down. 2 or 3 days ago, I read an article about them wanting Austin/McClean/Fryatt - So I knew they mean't business. Seems like they're bidding for all of them. I always thought they were skint. New Foreign owners, I guess.

Badger Posted 22 December, 2010 Share Posted 22 December, 2010 Best of luck to him if he does get a Prem move. I don't doubt his talent - he destroyed Leeds and Huddersfield and also was superb at Carrow Rd but his consistency and determination are what people would question. Let's hope we can get £750k or so, . For whatever reason though Puncheon simply has not really wanted to be here this season.

Saint_John Posted 22 December, 2010 Share Posted 22 December, 2010 I don't know where this Pardew rumour came from because Radio Solent said it was a LONDON club. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/p00cqskv/Julian_Clegg_21_12_2010 (51:39 - 52:40 into the program.) ".... currently out on loan at Millwall but BBC Radio Solent understands at least three other LONDON clubs have expressed a wish to sign the player. One of those clubs is believed to be in the Premier League....." My guess would be the soon to be sacked Toad.

Indeed he did go out on loan and come back a much better player, and after that a lot of Saints fans said they would gladly keep him. But he already wanted to leave by then because he'd had such a sh*t time. Plus he probably only came here for Redknapp.

Smirking_Saint Posted 22 December, 2010 Share Posted 22 December, 2010 Sometimes I think that you are watching totally different games to me. Both this and your lambert opinion I totally disagree with. Hard to argue about the fact that he was tracking back and defending a lot more. Just didn't seem anywhere near as potent attacking, which really is what he was on the pitch to do. Its a shame though, as early season for me he looked more threatening than others, its just what was infront of him gave him no options. The Lambert opinion, yes i agree with, he has been completely useless and a shadow of a shadow of last year, the times i have seen him him barely even jumps, just tries to nudge players off balance to win headers, and even when he does they are aimless. I don't know if he is injured or what but it is pretty clear he is out of confidence as he doesn't seem to want the ball, especially in any threatening positions. Its a bit of a null point anyways, the Puncheon one that is, as it doesn't matter if he was our best player, he doesn't want to be here and has made that perfectly obvious.
