Walsall Weather Watch / Build-up Thread - Game called off!

Met office site now not showing snow for tomorrow (Saturday) in the West Midlands but -4c at kick off time !! Only possibility of light snow today.

If the surrounding areas are not icy (crowd safety !!) and the pitch is frozen but flat the game should be on.

Not sure they will be playing with -4 of frost in the ground?

Looks like we now need some idle speculation as to 'Do Walsall have covers?'

I'll go first - 'possibly'.

It there is any frost the game will be off. If I was referee and there is any frost the game is off. We are instructed to call the game off as players safety must come first. The police will advise for anything outside the ground!

100% will be OFF!

Oh no not a bit of frost!! Bl**dy health & safety political correctness.

Man up and play some football.

You see this is the problem, as a match referee you get told you HAVE to call it off, if you do not you will get marked down. All stupid I think the game should be played, but do not make the rules I am afriad. H&S is just for outside the ground!

Cool thanks for that information SimonRichards Mate as it will be my first time there on my own if the game goes ahead sooo I wanted to know before I get there sooo I can have a pre-match pint before or have a pint after depending on what time I get there ;)!

Is this bloke for real?

Watching the Europa league stuff last night on the telly there were two teams (names escape me) playing in a ruddy snow storm, orange ball and snow all over the pitch. How come they can play in that we can't have a game if the pitch is frosty is this just a British thing?

In whatever country that was they probably don't worry too much if someone slips up outside the ground and bruises their bum.

I remember last year's game against Huddersfield at SMS was postponed not because of the state of the pitch but because of the state of the area around the stadium. Now I saw Chicago Bears-NE Patriots the other day, snow everywhere on the pitch, temperature down around -5 or 6 but the game went on and they had 60000 in the stands. It's about H+S and fear of litigation more than anything else in the UK these days.

Just spoken to bloke at walsall he is very confident game will go ahead ,hope so as leaving early for this one.Might be a tricky drive through oxfordshire.

Someone from the club? What were this thoughts?

Snow seems to have completely disappeared. Frozen pitch is the only possibility now, and with it seem to be a high of -3 tomorrow it will be touch and go.

Taken from Bimingham mail

Southampton gave Walsall two good chasings last season, beating them 3-1 at Bescot and 5-1 at St Mary’s, but have been afflicted by inconsistency this time round. They have dangerous players, not least Ricky Lambert up front, but have their off-days.

Pretty much sums us up this season.... Although it amazes me teams are still fearful of Ricky. Have they not heard?

Yes, the snow forecast has changed, certainly if roads are gritted it should be OK getting there. The problem is -7 tonight and -3 tomorrow will deffo mean a frozen pitch unless they have it well covered. Birthday treat could still be on!

No most football fans are completly ignorant of what goes on outside their own club other than the top 4-5 PL clubs, it's like last season I couldn't believe how many other fans I talked to who still thought we were in admin.

Just to prove that statement I've only just realised Wallsall are lining up with Olly Lancashire at the heart of their defence, I wonder if he'll make it to half time?

ANOTHER ADVANCED TRAIN TICKET WASTED.

Still might travel but this season is becoming a away fans nightmare.

4th "saturday" away game that will now be mid-week, added to the list of MK Dons, Oldham, Hartlepool.

And that's it? Our last pre-christmas game was that dire garbage against brentford? thanks saints, merry fcking christmas.

quality!

shame about the game though, whole weekend is in tatters...

Very annoyed with this. How can they call it off this early? At least see early tomorrow morning? What annoys me is yes this weather is a bit bad, but its nothing that extreme, we could quite easily have several more weekends of this and therefore a whole load of games called off. Plus it’s the impression I get that not that much real effort is made to get the game on, bet Blues’ game goes ahead!

Another train fare potentially wasted, and a good day out on the beer with pals cancelled. Rubbish!

I suppose Walsall are a club of very little means, perhaps they can't afford covers for the pitch and all that sort of stuff.

One of the big problems of being in the 3rd division, crap clubs with no fans and no money.

Taking fond memories of the Brentford game into another week. Aaaargh!

Yes we would have won this one at least. Charlton away......will be a good game but I wouldn't bet on the outcome (or Huddersfield at home for that matter).

Surely the pitch was frozen under all this snow?!?? Does this come down to under pitch heating?! Do wallsall have this or do they just not bother like us....

Have wallsall got any injury problems that would cause them to call off this game?!

We aren't nescessarily going to be cut adrift here, stop putting such a negative spin on it.

Firstly Saints are hardly exclusive when it comes to game called off. I seem to remember when the Hartlepool game was postponed, Swindon vs Wednesday was the only League 1 fixture to go ahead all weekend. Walsall is hardly out in the wilderness. If their pitch is unplayable, there will be a lot more games called off in the next 25 hours.

Secondly, people seem to be under the assumption that all 22 other teams will win their games if they go ahead. They wont and we could find ourselves maybe 2 points behind one of our rivals with 2 games in hands. Really not a bad scenario to be in.

Plus these are all games which will be replayed AFTER the January transfer window. There may not be much spending, but even if we only get 2 or 3 players, we will be a lot stronger for it. Plus we have Barnard, Chaplow and Richardson all coming back from injuries, who will be all the fitter for another week's training.

Chill people!

It's not really about being 'cut loose' though, it's about squeezing 15 away games into the 19 weeks that remain of the season. Still League 1 doesn't programme all that much midweek football so there are plenty of free dates.

Based on the logic that we just lost to Brentford, which is therefore typical of every game after a 2 week break?

Yep, I go with that. There's been some serious snow around the UK and not many grounds at this level will have undersoil heating systems. If the weather allows, we can probably get a closed doors game for the likes of Chaplow, Richardson and Barnard (assuming he hasn't had a hernia op) so they are revved up for Charlton and Hudds. The extra sequence of games also give Adkins a good case to take to NC for getting some fresh firepower in.

Surely a frozen pitch it not a good excuse when everyone knew it would be cold this week, Walsall could have covered the pitch and used heaters. Very frustrated at the number of Saturday games being moved to midweek because of postponements.
