Only possibility of light snow today. If the surrounding areas are not icy (crowd safety !!) and the pitch is frozen but flat the game should be on. Not sure they will be playing with -4 of frost in the ground? Looks like we now need some idle speculation as to 'Do Walsall have covers?' I'll go first - 'possibly'. Dr Who? Posted 17 December, 2010 Share Posted 17 December, 2010 It there is any frost the game will be off. If I was referee and there is any frost the game is off. We are instructed to call the game off as players safety must come first. The police will advise for anything outside the ground! 100% will be OFF! Dr Who? Posted 17 December, 2010 Share Posted 17 December, 2010 Oh no not a bit of frost!! Bl**dy health & safety political correctness. Man up and play some football. You see this is the problem, as a match referee you get told you HAVE to call it off, if you do not you will get marked down. All stupid I think the game should be played, but do not make the rules I am afriad. H&S is just for outside the ground!

doddisalegend Posted 17 December, 2010 Share Posted 17 December, 2010 Watching the Europa league stuff last night on the telly there were two teams (names escape me) playing in a ruddy snow storm, orange ball and snow all over the pitch. How come they can play in that we can't have a game if the pitch is frosty is this just a British thing?

How come they can play in that we can't have a game if the pitch is frosty is this just a British thing? In whatever country that was they probably don't worry too much if someone slips up outside the ground and bruises their bum. I remember last year's game against Huddersfield at SMS was postponed not because of the state of the pitch but because of the state of the area around the stadium. Now I saw Chicago Bears-NE Patriots the other day, snow everywhere on the pitch, temperature down around -5 or 6 but the game went on and they had 60000 in the stands. It's about H+S and fear of litigation more than anything else in the UK these days. Charlie Wayman Posted 17 December, 2010 Share Posted 17 December, 2010 I've just looked at the traffic cams on the Walsall by-pass, and whilst there's a small amount of snow on the verges of the M6 the road is clear and flowing easily so it may not be as bad up there as we might have feared. Anyway keep checking for yourselves on here http://www.bbc.co.uk/travelnews/birmingham/trafficcameras/

Nexstar Posted 17 December, 2010 Share Posted 17 December, 2010 Snow seems to have completely disappeared. Frozen pitch is the only possibility now, and with it seem to be a high of -3 tomorrow it will be touch and go.
Liquidshokk Posted 17 December, 2010 Share Posted 17 December, 2010 Taken from Bimingham mail Southampton gave Walsall two good chasings last season, beating them 3-1 at Bescot and 5-1 at St Mary’s, but have been afflicted by inconsistency this time round. They have dangerous players, not least Ricky Lambert up front, but have their off-days. Shrivvy Saint Posted 17 December, 2010 Share Posted 17 December, 2010 Yes, the snow forecast has changed, certainly if roads are gritted it should be OK getting there. Sour Mash Posted 17 December, 2010 Share Posted 17 December, 2010 Very annoyed with this. How can they call it off this early? At least see early tomorrow morning? What annoys me is yes this weather is a bit bad, but its nothing that extreme, we could quite easily have several more weekends of this and therefore a whole load of games called off. Plus it’s the impression I get that not that much real effort is made to get the game on, bet Blues’ game goes ahead! Another train fare potentially wasted, and a good day out on the beer with pals cancelled. Rubbish!

Lighthouse Posted 17 December, 2010 Share Posted 17 December, 2010 We aren't nescessarily going to be cut adrift here, stop putting such a negative spin on it. Firstly Saints are hardly exclusive when it comes to game called off. I seem to remember when the Hartlepool game was postponed, Swindon vs Wednesday was the only League 1 fixture to go ahead all weekend. Walsall is hardly out in the wilderness. If their pitch is unplayable, there will be a lot more games called off in the next 25 hours. Secondly, people seem to be under the assumption that all 22 other teams will win their games if they go ahead. They wont and we could find ourselves maybe 2 points behind one of our rivals with 2 games in hands. Really not a bad scenario to be in. Plus these are all games which will be replayed AFTER the January transfer window. There may not be much spending, but even if we only get 2 or 3 players, we will be a lot stronger for it. Plus we have Barnard, Chaplow and Richardson all coming back from injuries, who will be all the fitter for another week's training. Chill people! It's not really about being 'cut loose' though, it's about squeezing 15 away games into the 19 weeks that remain of the season. Still League 1 doesn't programme all that much midweek football so there are plenty of free dates.

There's been some serious snow around the UK and not many grounds at this level will have undersoil heating systems. If the weather allows, we can probably get a closed doors game for the likes of Chaplow, Richardson and Barnard (assuming he hasn't had a hernia op) so they are revved up for Charlton and Hudds. The extra sequence of games also give Adkins a good case to take to NC for getting some fresh firepower in.
