dubai_phil Posted 9 January, 2011 Posted 9 January, 2011 The bloke that washes the Lorries in the RMC yard came up with an interesting snippet this evening about this transfer window. Apparently "The phone is ringing just about off the hook with Agents calling in asking us to take on PL Bench Warmers, youngsters and other out of favour players for loans or permanent moves" An interesting comment, seems it is not so much about who we want to go after, more who we are turning down, it was followed up by "he can't ever remember it being like this in his 700+ years of truck washing" He's a fair source and I'm not getting all excited but it did make the grin I have had all weekend an extra inch wider. Even if not totally 1000% true, I can see what he means.
saintsmike25 Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 You really think championship players are going to come down to league one to be squad rotation players?! We have enough pace with Guily/Puncheon/Chamberlain and Lallana has pace too. I think our team has the perfect balance right now.

We have enough pace with Guily/Puncheon/Chamberlain and Lallana has pace too. I think our team has the perfect balance right now. IMHO Oxo is the only one of those with blistering pace and has effectively replaced Antonio from last season ! Guly and Punch are not slow but cannot be considered 'explosive', whereas Adam's lack of pace is his only real weakness ! I consider that we only need one more player in the current squad and the overriding priority is that he should be like 'sh#t off a shovel' !
wightman35 Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 Perhaps Ian Holloway would like to loan Matt Phillips to us for the rest of the Seasom?
saintpat Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 We need to keep the existing squad, including Puncheon and Guly and sign a good CB. Yes, we have CB's who are good enough for this league, but ideally we'll get another who is 'too good' for this league. I think that should easily see us winning the league. Then during the close season we can start looking for players who are 'too good' for the Championship!!
sdeery Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 saints are rumoured to be in talks with matt tubbs of Crawley! got a great goalscoring record in non-league maybe worth a go!
Saint Fan CaM Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 saints are rumoured to be in talks with matt tubbs of Crawley! got a great goalscoring record in non-league maybe worth a go! I am not so sure about this one. He will be a squad player at best as I cannot see him displacing Lambert, Barnard and Guly. I suppose if Connolly is released he might get the occassional look in - but could he really hack-it at a higher level and do we want to take that risk? And before someone cites Martin - yeah sure, but he's not played for ages anywhere near the 1st team.
NickG Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 maybe squad player. what do you think chances of getting someone to displace Guly / Lambert and Barnard? Would have either be so good confident that better than them or willing to be a squad forward??
Chez Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 saints are rumoured to be in talks with matt tubbs of Crawley! got a great goalscoring record in non-league maybe worth a go! People go on and on about Connelly never being fit, but he has been fit for the last two months and only really made the bench. Tubbs strikes me as a very similar player, perhaps not even as good, not sure how he'd get a game here either. Maybe the aim would be buy Tubbs, loan Connelly out before releasing him at the end of the season. Doesn't feel likely to me though.
Chez Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 I notice Leicester have loaned Michael Morrison out to Sheff Wednesday. Very good young centre back that was central to their promotion two seasons ago and played well for them in the championship last season. Worth keeping an eye on.

Pretty sure it was permanent deal not on loan.
Chez Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 Pretty sure it was permanent deal not on loan. scrub that one then. Shame. Decent player.
LatvianTolix Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 Artjoms rudnevs is a man for saints. Lambert type of player with good speed and pace. Has a great header. Juve and arse are interested in him. Grab him.
CWD Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 Juve and arse are interested in him. Then we have no chance do we!
Saint_lambden Posted 10 January, 2011 Posted 10 January, 2011 Fonte is NOT in Newcastle for talks with them contrary to newspaper reports up there , the team are already up in Oldham.

Take your point about Guly but I would back him to leave 95% of League One defenders in his dust over 10 yards or 50 yards. He really could be a tremendous asset for the rest of the season. Will be gutted if he doesn't sign.
Gordon Mockles Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 Take your point about Guly but I would back him to leave 95% of League One defenders in his dust over 10 yards or 50 yards. He really could be a tremendous asset for the rest of the season. Will be gutted if he doesn't sign. Guly really isn't all that quick. Average at best. Morgan & Puncheon quicker. Oxo obviously. Guly's not slow but certainly not as quick as his bandy physique suggests & posters on this forum purport.
georgeweahscousin Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 Well twitter is providing another source of rumour! Yesterday, Radio Metro in Newcastle announced that Jose Fonte had arrived there via helicopter for talks, only for Official Saints to declare he was sat on the team bus on the way to Oldham. This morning a Saints fan declared that Chamberlain was meeting Wenger at his house tonight, only to change it to last night when pointed out to him that we are playing Oldham tonight.....
H Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 Morgan quicker than Guly? PMSL +1 ... must be confusing him with Hammond?
Matthew Le God Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 This morning a Saints fan declared that Chamberlain was meeting Wenger at his house tonight, only to change it to last night when pointed out to him that we are playing Oldham tonight..... He will have to change it again because the squad drove to Oldham yesterday afternoon.
buctootim Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 He will have to change it again because the squad drove to Oldham yesterday afternoon. Maybe Wenger has a holiday home in Oldham
SuperMikey Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 The only players in our first team that I would describe as 'quick' are Oxo, Dickson and Puncheon.
LeBenali Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 Joe Lewis has handed in a transfer request at Peterborough. Thought he had a good game at SMS a few weeks ago (despite conceding 4 goals!). Now I personally don't think we need another goalie at the moment, but there have been calls from some supporters that we need to replace KD, and there won't be many more realistic targets than Lewis..

Been meaning to post about him since we played them. Didn't realise he's handed in a transfer request more reason to go for him. Under 21 no1 I believe.
SuperMikey Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 Lewis would be an excellent signing, definitely going to be a good Prem keeper in the future. 6'6" as well, he's a big bugger. I guess the reason for his transfer request is Johnson leaving/a higher division club are courting him.
Colinjb Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 As for Lewis, there are big problems waiting until you NEED a new keeper to replace one. If a good young keeper is available then it has to be worth a go. If he'd come here, then move Bart on and let him compete with Davis. He'd probably overtake him by next season. I like Bart, but it's all about improvement really. Can't argue with that.
Colinjb Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 Adam Birchall needs a second chance and at a club like us could finally reach the potential he showed a few years back. Dover Athletic's Adam Birchall? Or do you mean Trinidad and Tobago international Chris Birchall who is at the Laaaaa Galaxy?
doggface Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 So I guess our "substantial bids" never got accepted as it's all quiet?
Saint Without a Halo Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 So I guess our "substantial bids" never got accepted as it's all quiet? Usually all the business gets done at the end of the period as the poker game on whether anyone else will come in or the bids will be raised is played out! just like bidding on E bay!
K,Billy's supersound Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 awesome, keeps pressure on brighton and as it stands tonight we now have best goal difference bring on notts on saturday
Danish Saint Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 Things are done much more quietly at St. Mary's now. We'll only hear it, when the player has signed. Not a sniff untill then.

Now who's " 'avin a larf ?"
S-Clarke Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 ..Do we really need anyone??! (other than Guly signed up)
Smirking_Saint Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 Kilgallon ?? Free to leave sunderland (i think)
MarkSFC Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 Its amazing how quickly things have changed. I think the postponed games have done us a huge favour as it has allowed a few players some extra recovery time and not put extra pressure on thse fit. This coupled with many players appearing to reach good to best form and all of a sudden we are playing very well and looking very strong. However....a couple of injuries here and a couple of suspensions there and we could be a lot weaker and not the irrepressable force we are right here and now. E.G. take Fonte out for 3 or 4 games and we are much weaker...I could list names who if they were to be out as the sameas each other would cause major issues but for me we need to strengthen still in order to gaurantee promotion - in fact the Championship - and just as importantly to integrate two maybe three at a push new players into the club so they are well prepared for next season. Plus we need to sign Guly! Ideally I would like to see a "very promising" (already playing in NPC or on the fringes of a Prem team) Centre Back. Also another Centre midfielder, preferably a hard battling "Robbie Savage type" and another striker.

Smirking_Saint Posted 11 January, 2011 Posted 11 January, 2011 Lewis would be a great signing, I am also one of the supporters that believes replacing KD will happen this season or next.
skintsaint Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 just emailed a scouse mate of mine about our 6-0 win last night and he said that Saints have come in for a player called Suso and want him on loan for the rest of the season. never heard of him? anyone else?
Hopkins Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Suso is Dani Pacheco. He's ridiculously good, Spanish U19 striker and top scorer in the recent Euro Championships I think. Would be immense but I doubt very much it is true.
Hopkins Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Wow, my bad. I have that all wrong. Suso is Fernandez. Who once again is probably too good to come here.

Scudamore Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Happy with signing Guly and keeping everyone. Only issue is keep Puncheon or replace him. But lots of signings would only unsettle a great squad. Only an idiot would have said this squad won't get promoted! But then we have several idiots. And no, I know we aren't up, but I think it's been proved countless times the squad IS more than good enough to win it, it's just down to management, attitude and consistency now. Yes but we're looking beyond just going up here aren't we? And maintaining a squad is a constant work in progress. It's not all about the here and now...
Window Cleaner Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 http://www.footylounge.com/films/milankakabaros/fernandez-suso-v-crystal-palace-08012011-video_abf4ead08.html Suso Suso is a Liverpool player, don't like the sound of that really.
St.Patrik Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 Liverpool will send Nathan Eccleston to Charlton on loan for the rest of the season according to SKY. Perhaps they are loaning out some youngsters to get new players into the 25 player squad?

Perhaps they are loaning out some youngsters to get new players into the 25-player squad? Pardew wanted to bring him here just prior to his sacking. A good player, and would do well at this level.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 12 January, 2011 Posted 12 January, 2011 http://www.skysports.com/story/0,195...658739,00.html Permission denied, I hope, if Sky's story is true. Or we'll take Gerrard or Rooney in part-ex.
