So to keep the rumours and news thread from getting too clogged, who do we want to see Saints linked with, who would be a good target for us, and who do we think might want to come here?

 

We don't actually need to be linked with the players in this thread, this is just for our own idle speculation...

 

And since I know someone will ask (they always do...) HCDAJFU stands for He Could Do A Job For Us.

A striker, 2 if Guly goes back (fingers crossed) and another Chaplow-like CM. By that I mean one that makes useful attacking runs and can actually hit the back of the net.

 

Feel Adkins needs to make Fonte captain ASAP as well.

Specific players - Le Fondre, Beattie (thought I'd get in early with than one), Chaplow on a perm.

 

General requirements

A winger with pace and height. Antonio would be perfect, but we wont get him.

A winger with skill and technique.

A big strong, but much younger, centre half to replace Jaidi

 

HCNDAJFU - Pulis, Forecast, Wotton, Holmes, Connolly, Guly and Jaidi. Getting rid of them may prove difficult in some cases.

2 centre mids (Chaplow looks nailed on, need one more and possibly another if Schneiderlin goes)

1 centre back (to replace Jaidi, this deal could be done at the end of the season)

Pulis (ANYONE TAKE HIM, PLEASE! I WILL GIVE YOU MONEY TO TAKE HIM)

Holmes (shame to see him go, but injuries hold him back so much)

Forecast (because he's sh!t)

Wotton (see Forecast)

Connolly (again, injury problems)

Jaidi (getting on, need a replacement sooner rather than later)

 

Possible Targets:

Striker - Matt Tubbs (Crawley - heard a fair few rumours linking us with this guy), Craig Mackail-Smith (Peterborough), Alex Nimely (Man City), Sean Scannell (Crystal Palace)

Winger - Martyn Woolford (Scunny), Dany N'Guessan (Leicester, on loan at Scunny), Michail Antonio (Reading - unlikely at best though), Graham Carey (Celtic, on loan at Huddersfield)

Centre Back - Sean Morrison (Swindon), Scott Cuthbert (Swindon), Brian Easton (Burnley), Mark Beevers (Sheff Wed)

Centre Mid - Murray Davidson (St Johnstone), Liam Craig (St Johnstone), Nick Montgomery (Sheff Utd), Michael Tonge (Stoke)

Three players currently doing the biz at Gillingham;

Chris Whelpdale on loan from Posh and his team-mate midfielder Charlie Lee (2 succesive promotion campaigns iirc).

 

Also Cody McDonald (on loan from Norwich as part of the Jackson deal). took a ahile to break into the 1st 11 following injury but dinding the back of the net at last.

 

I follow The Gills quite closely and they are really hitting form atm, I put that down to Andy Hess's aptitude for finding nuggets like those mentioned.

 

FWIW, I also feel that looking for players from higher leagues is not always prudent business.

In my ideal world, we'd get in a left footed version of Antonio and a mentally stronger version of Puncheon. That way we have a pacy option and a technical player for both wings.

 

Agree that Martin could do the job and I don't get why he's not in the team instead of Jaidi, who is getting very old and is far too slow. Him and Fonte would be my first choice pairing. A new CB isn't a top priority, but without Fonte we look pretty dodgy.

 

Guly can go back to Italy. I'm sorry he's just crap.

Really not sure about BWP, he is the League's top scorer, but as its us, would he come back/would the fans accept him?

Spend spend spend. A front two needed imo. Austin and Rhodes would be amazing, or Fryatt and Le Fondre. Someone, anyone, that can get us goals. Chaplow on a permanent is a definite.

 

And a right winger. I'm not fussy, I just think it's what's needed if we want to push for promotion. Defence is ok currently.

Would love that but wont happen. Rhodes is quality and still only 20 and no way would Huddersfield sell to us. Austin i can see happening. We need at least one striker.

Cant see Austin coming to us he is being linked to Celtic, would like to get him though and Le fondre, Sign Chaplow on a perm and get two wingers

James Dunne... Exeter..midfield

 

Ryan Harley... Exeter...midfield

 

A couple of loan players from anywhere who can play striker/midfield if we can't get the above.

I think it is fairly well documented that Chaplow will sign permanently in January.

 

Also we need a winger with pace to take a bit pressure off Chamberlain. A loan would be OK there.

Striker : Le Fondre, or Fryatt immediately spring to mind.Vokes on loan? Austin will probably go to NPC.

 

Wide/pace : Waigo,Antonio,but unlikely.

 

Midfield: crying out for someone....don't know as well as Chaplow.

 

Defence : yes,a new CB as Jaidi too old for two games a week,Seabourne - jury still out, Fonte assume he will stay.

 

GK : Lewis from Peterborough as long term successor to KD.

thing is..i would take austin now...for his swindon achievements..

I would not have taken austin ahead of lambert last season..

Chaplow, Chaplow, everyone says Chaplow, yes just what we need but is he injury-prone and going to be another Holmes? Remember Charlie George and quite a few others, just what we want but on the pitch not in the treatment room.

what difference does it make what season it is? If the right player is there from what ever level lets grab him. Admomah, Dawson and Dawson were all league 2 last season and available and we missed out. There is real talent available from League 2, players that can not only hold there own in League 1 but can play in the championship - exactly what we are after. In many ways these players are preferable to failed Championship players.

We already have the stand out striker of the past 2-3 seasons in league 1, we also released the current top scorer and i don't know too many football savvy saints fans that would want him back. Also, especially in January i can't see many NPC strikers looking to come down a league to Saints.

 

So the likes of Austin and Le Fondre are what we have left, and IMO worth a punt.

I know NC hinted money was there for Jan but I don't think he was planning to buy a whole new first 11. I reckon we might sign two-three players at most and Chaplow will be one of those. Most of all we need someone who can put the ball in the back of the net anything else is a bonus.

We need three IMO. CM (Chaplow) winger and a striker. One more if Schneiderlin goes.

One striker is paramount. Two would be great. An audacious double swoop on peterboro for Mackail-Smith and MaClean would be excellent. Buying an already succesful partnership would cut down on bedding in time and completey remove the burden and pressure from Lambert. Those two alse have experience in the Championsip.

 

A winger seems neccessary but not essential to me.

 

I do think we need a quality CM as well as signing Chaplow.

 

We definitely need another CB as yesterday proved we are too vulnerable without Fonte.

 

A keeper that commands his box, can kick and digstribute better than kelvin who for his shot stopping ability is not going to take us to the Prem!

Here's an idea. Every time a player has a bad game we buy a replacement. Eventually we will have all the good players so we will HAVE to win every match then...won't we???

Then we will steam through the leagues and after that win the European Cup!

 

I find it mildly amusing the way everybody wants to get rid of someone after a bad game. A few weeks back Jaidi was "immense" and Davis was a hero for saving a penalty. The fact is, we are a typical L1 team. When all our good players are in the side, and they have their heads in the right space, we will beat any other team tin this league. Unfortunately, the reason MOST of the players are in this league, is because a) They really aren't that good and b) They think they are better than they are.

As a consequence the results are erratic to say the least.

 

For what it's worth, I would like to see a small turnover of players in January. Maybe get rid of some deadwood (the usual suspects...Forecast, Pulis, Holmes, Wotton), and if possible bring in an aggressive midfielder and a speedy goal poacher - but I would think that most Div 1 teams are looking for the same.

Chaplow, Harley, Le Fondre and Austin are bare minimum signings ie we have no chance whatosever of finishing top 6 without them. If we want top 2, we need to go further - Myles Weston, and some quality loans. A decent CB would help also.

 

We can fund some of these by getting rid of Morgan S, Puncheon and co. Might be worth cashing in on AOC if it gets the above in and Arsenal can provide quality loans as well. Would hate to sell AOC but we must get into the top 2 so needs must!

Whoever we go for, has to fit the criteria set by this club. That is, a young player willing to play in L1, capable of playing in the CC, with the potential to play in the PL.
