Thedelldays Posted 14 December, 2010 Share Posted 14 December, 2010 If you want to divert into silly games try this one : Birmingham City Council, population 1.028 million, budget REDUCTION £105.3 million, -8.32%. what is silly...you just told me how unfair st helens has it compared to dorset..when it really has about 3 times the cash to spend per head.. bridge too far Posted 14 December, 2010 Share Posted 14 December, 2010 With a little bit of simple maths that shows that people in Dorset get less then half the amount of money that people in Plymouth and St Helens. Plymouth: £939 per person St Helens: £1080 per person Dorset: £407 per person Yes, this budget adjustment is a huge injustice. You really don't understand how local government works, do you. A person living in, say, Bournemouth, will get £x (whatever its settlement is) PLUS £407 per person that is the Dorset per capita spend. It's totally illogical to compare Dorset to St Helens or Plymouth - it's like comparing apples to pears. Dorset is a COUNTY council, St Helens and Plymouth are DISTRICT councils. Understand now? Damn the over inflated beaurotic public sector. )

It's unfair because St Helens, due to it's various social and economic issues, requires that money, whereas Dorset doesn't. It's the basic concept of a social welfare system, everybody subscribes to the pot, and those that require it get access to it.

CB Saint Posted 14 December, 2010 Share Posted 14 December, 2010 To keep comparisons on a like for like basis, you should compare plymouth and st helens to say southampton; and devon and merseyside to hampshire or dorset then see what the differences are. Southampton reduction = £9.6 million, -4.37% Hampshire reduction = £7.8 million, -0.95% Unfortunately there is no county of Merseyside, they are all Unitaries, like So'ton, : Knowsley -10.72%, Liverpool City -11.34%, Sefton ( Southport ) -6.74%, Wirral -7.42%, . bridge too far Posted 14 December, 2010 Share Posted 14 December, 2010 For those who want the facts, here is the spreadsheet https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AonYZs4MzlZbdG9NQ0k5UUN1LVNYNm5DSjVKNDBuNGc&hl=en#gid=0 As Badger (and I) have pointed out, there are County Councils, District Councils (and Unitary Authorities - overlooked that one ). So when you trawl the list for, say West Oxfordshire (District Council), where I live, you also have to look at Oxfordshire County Council. I live in David Cameron's constituency. We've done OK. Stubby Posted 14 December, 2010 Share Posted 14 December, 2010 The Liberals are taking all the flak because they are spineless and stupid. You've got to admire Cameron for the way that all the bad news is being deflected onto his fag, Clegg. The Libs will get decimated in the next election as they are being found out at last. The Liberals are not spineless. If they were, they'd cave in to the pressure from the media, the students and the thugs. They were dishonest; they made a ridiculous promise to oppose tuition fees, because they thought they wouldn't get into government. Now they've been found out. They weren't dishonest, they bent over backwards to gain some sort of power for the first time in decades. To do that they removed their spine and any morals compass they had. Well not all, fair play to the 20 or 21 that followed through with their promise and didn't get blinded by the headlights of "power". They're ****ed at the next election. Back to a 2 horse race. Lord Duckhunter Posted 14 December, 2010 Share Posted 14 December, 2010 They were dishonest; they made a ridiculous promise to oppose tuition fees, because they thought they wouldn't get into government. Now they've been found out. Who said "We have no plans to introduce University top-up fees, and have legislated to prevent their introduction"? The dishonest Lib/Dems? The nasty Party? No, it was the Labour party. Who then went onto introduce top up fees. The only party that was stright with the British people over this was the Tories. I expect you to go straight round to their offices tomorrow and indicate exactly which parts of the 'scroungers support plan' they should immediately curtail, and which non-jobs should be pruned, to cover this loss of finance. I already helped with efficiency savings last year by writing a formal letter of complaint about the heating being on too high with the same letter sent to the local newspaper. They now all wear jumpers and cardigans and complain that it's cold. he he he.

Johnny Bognor Posted 14 December, 2010 Share Posted 14 December, 2010 Are Tories just greedy or is there something else there that motivates them? I can guarantee that if this government survives the five years there will be big tax cuts just before the next election because this is the reason they have cut so hard and deep now. When Georgie Porgy offers the tax cuts there will be people saying "**** the unemployed i'm voting for a 2% income tax cut" like they did in the 80's. The tories are defininately greedy. They've even got more posts on their thread than yours. Perhaps there could be a re-distribution of posts, where the mods take some of the posts off of their thread and add them to yours in order to make it a bit more balanced and fair. Or we could take the commie approach and shut the other thread down (whilst killing all the students) and we will be left with just this one to post on. What do you think? angelman Posted 15 December, 2010 Share Posted 15 December, 2010 to be honest, all councils **** away money (as it isn't theirs). I am sure that we could all save quite a bit of money from the budget. BUT The area you want to look into is the councils pension schemes. You can see it all in here http://www.southampton.gov.uk/Images/Statement%20of%20Accounts%202009_10_tcm46-264864.pdf

EDIT - and here was the socialist take on it back in Jan 2010. Burying heads up each other's backsides as long as they look after themselves. www.gmb.org.uk/default.aspx?page=709 Just to put this into context, based on what I heard on the financial reports on the radio this morning; This new report is based on certain presumptions over the rate of inflation and the performance of bonds and stocks. According to a talking head on 'Wake up to Money' on R5Live, ( other radio stations are available ), there is a potential flaw in the method used as it assumes that the performance of these areas will continue into the forseable future at the current level, with low yields and low interest rates. The manager of the London Pension Scheme countered by saying it was a particularly pessimistic view of how things would develop, and that the forecasts of the people managing the schemes do not agree with this particular individual. badgerx16 Posted 15 December, 2010 Share Posted 15 December, 2010 A Tory controlled county council says that Pickles' figures published on Monday are misleading : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-11997631 "The council has calculated it is losing far more than the 2% originally presented by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles on Monday. It said it is looking at a 12% funding cut, meaning it will have £26m less to play with"
