Good on them, the Echo just "steal" stories all the time now from the nationals/BBC/Saints OS, but odd to see the BBC air their grievances in public. :D

What is your point? Pots & Kettles if you ask me. The BBC are no friends of ours whereas The Echo is so I know where my money's going. About time people stopped bashing the free press Echo, the BBC appear far from independent on most issues.

I'd just like a local paper that provided good coverage of the local team. The Echo falls short in a number of areas. The continuing practice of "stealing" stories from other outlets is poor journalism. It would be okay perhaps if they had exclusives of their own, but pretty much every Saints story in the paper is lifted from elsewhere(normally the OS/Saints player). Positive stories like that of the Cortese interview are lifted only in small detail and a negative spin is put on it such as the comment about the BBC having a deal with the club.

I think it's more a case of bashing poor journalism. Getting all your stories from twitter or the BBC sport website is terribly lazy. Even I could do that, and I didn't spend 3 years at Uni learning about the bloody profession.

Your obsession with the Echo is rather weird.

Your obsession with defending the Echo would be weird if we didn't know about your bromance with Dan Kerins.

Oh, hang about, maybe not. :D

Not sure what's wrong with the Echo printing information from other sources than their own, we'd be the first to complain if the local paper ignored Saints news stories that everyone else was reporting - you'd end up with the kind of ultimately authoritative-but-limited junk that the OS publishes.

The Echo are entitled to print stuff they've looked up themselves as well as widely available information - the second it's published it's fair game anyway.

As for the work experience - and are you a journalist now ? Thought not.

Uhm... thing is the Echo like most local rags need copy that goes beyond ' old lady sues Tesco for potato that looks like her late husbands p***s'' and they knwo that the club stories are big sellers... but like most these days they dont ever seem to think first and play the long game. I am sure the club would love to be able to trust them and provide them with exclusives and the big stories first, but time and again they print stuff either after they have been asked to hold on for a few hours, or pander to the the club bashing by the old guard... seriously, as any press they will print anything irrespective of hether its harmful to the club or not.... instead of clearing the air and developing a strong and robust relationship with the club...

I know many on here equate Good Public relations practice with spin... a sad legacy of a classic daily Mailesque campaign to get 'spin' engrained in any PR/press release by the last Government, in which they seem to have succeeded.

BUt bad stories sell more papers than good ones, so its no surprise that the Echo is keen to print negative ****e, that although in the grand scheme of things is forgotten tomorrow, nonetheless can damage the club, as typically like all media they chose their moments to coincide with sensitive commercial negotiations... that is their free press right, but if they chose to exceecise that right in the way they do, then it cant be classed as a supporter of the club.

The Echo is a wonderful publication.

It published my letter about Portaloo without cutting a word and put a nice big box around it.

I truly believe they are wise and intelligent mega beings.

After all, they must have READ my letter before they published it.

Which makes them STILL the only people to have ever read anything I have typed.

(And it also did work as JP was resigned the next day which remains my other footballing claim to fame)

Did you have a little trouser moment when you read those tweets?

Stick to the computer games, because media analysis is well beyond you.

It's not exactly harming you then if that's your opinion so I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't think it's harming anyone and i'm not worried.

Thanks for the concern though.

Clearly irritates the original poster so much that he has to comment on the evils of the Echo every other week.

Hardly anyone buys the paper anymore. They've sacked a hell of a lot of workers over the last few years. To survive they are cutting costs to the bone. They have to pick up stories from wherever they can. Papers have always picked up news from other news media, that's nothing new. The Echo now just rewrites it (slightly) rather than adding anything of their own to it.

Which is rather odd considering Newsquest made a profit of somewhere in the region of £80m last year. Tough times indeed.

My grandad buys the echo everyday, he doesnt use the interent, or watch much tv. He doesnt give a flying **** where the echo get the storys from, as long as he knows whats going on with his football club, who gives a ****. I'm sure there are many (not like us interent trolls) that rely on the echo in a similar way. Give it up you cretin.

That is a surprise because this report dated August says all Regional papers bar one are losing circulation.

It is one of the few tables where the Cheats FC are above us, 45,175 (News) against 34,550 (Echo).

I think everyone accepts that we have a larger fan base than the Cheats FC therefore imo it might be something to do with the fact that they write POSITIVE articles about their team rather than the rubbish that the Echo prints (I've counted at least 6 articles in the last few weeks where they have been "trying" to sell Adam in January, to Stoke,Wolves,Toon etc.). Whenever NC talks of "dark forces" I always think of the Echo.

when we sgn him on a five year deal the speculation will go away and indeed the Echo will report on this good news.

Personally I want the local paper to reveal warts andf all about the club, not just print the clubs PR for it. The only time I would get upset if if they should print lies.

This exactly.

Also, The inet has a lot to answer for in its generating of expectations of a continual stream of news. Sometimes there just isn't any.

As a journalist I'd like to add my two cents worth...

The Echo's sports department smacks of lazy journalism, the type which gives all of us in the trade a bad name. I'm not a fan. The people there are paid to come up with original news stories, which isn't an easy task, but they could at least try or failing that, look like they're trying.

The fact is however, papers of the quality and size of the Echo will always be the first point of call for someone like myself for when they graduate from a journalism course. Papers like the Echo are the first run on the ladder and once you've served a bit of time there, the hope is that bigger and better things are around the corner.

I once asked if they actually got any original stories via their own means and didn't just rip off this forum - they were annoyed, but didn't deny it...!
