sir woody Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 I seem to remember someone on the board saying that we have had it installed, but it was never fully operational. Is that still the case ?
Matthew Le God Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 It isn't really needed either. In the 9 years at the stadium how many games have been called off at St Mary's due to the pitch? The Huddersfield game last season was more for the safety concerns of supporters around the ground rather than the pitch wasn't it?
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 Isn't it that the pipes are there but not plumbed in to anything?
swannymere Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 I thought it was a hot air system that was never plumbed in, and as has been said games are usually called off for health and safety of the fans in mind rather than the condition of the pitch.
doddisalegend Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 (edited) Isn't it that the pipes are there but not plumbed in to anything? That's what I heard, but like MLG said above as they haven't got under pavement heating in the areas around SMS it doesn't really matter the pitch could be fantastic but if the paths outside are all lethal ice then it doesn't matter. derry Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 If we get to the Premier we are going to have to have it
Matthew Le God Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 If we get to the Premier we are going to have to have it Why? Saints didn't have it between 2001-2005 and how many games did not having it lead to postponements?
70's Mike Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 If we get to the Premier we are going to have to have it Why
dune Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 We must have some provision because the Skates regularly have games off.
SparkySaint Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 I noticed the other week that there were trench marks between the irrigation decoder boxes on the kingsland side of the pitch. Personally I think they should install new irrigation, undersoil heating and replace the pitch with fibrelastic turf and give the firm I work for a call. If that happened then I would be very happy as I would be involved with the installation
miserableoldgit Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 I went on a visit to SMS when it was being built and I asked about under soil heating and I was told that there was none. They decided not to install any to save cost and because we very rarely had games called off.
sandwichsaint Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 I've always understood it wasnt installed because with the pitch being virtually at sea level and close to the river it wasn't needed. I'm not sure it was ever a cost thing - it simply wasn't needed - and 'events' seem to have proved that correct over the years. Will make an interesting discussion if we ever return to the Prem (presumably we will be forced to have it!)
Fan The Flames Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 Why is everyone under the impression that the Premier League will force us to install it.

CB Fry Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 http://www.people.co.uk/sport/football/news/2010/12/05/the-heat-s-really-on-over-blackpool-s-frozen-pitch-102039-22761989/?sms_ss=twitter&at_xt=4cfc12e0df97fbb2,0 They face a fine or points deduction if its not installed next season. Blackpool may need it, well they clearly do need it. Saints don't need it and have never had a game called off for a frozen pitch.
Thedelldays Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 we have lost 1 game due to the pitch at SMS....and that was because it was soaked and not frozen
toofarnorth Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 Was at SMS today and the pitch is fully covered and there are heating units over the goalmouths preventing the ground from freezing. We seem to have other ways of ensuring games are kept on.
buctootim Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 I thought we used covers at SMS - similar to putting a blanket over your windscreen at night.
