Cortese breaks silence

Maybe Cortese got annoyed that Roan posted about it on twitter before it went up and has refused to allow it to be published.

In fairness, he does have to type it up 1st!

Co-incidence that this is coming out when Pards is just about to become Newcastle manager?

I am also invited to dinner this evening with NC, I think this is the second time he has held one of these fans dinner and wasnt the last one just after AP left the club. Lets hope tonight we hear something substantial regarding the future of SFC and the players.

Possibly, though I personally think it's a non-story that the club isn't for sale. We knew that when Mr. Liebherr died and not much has changed since.

I think we should read into what Dan said on Twitter - this interview could be Cortese 'breaking his silence'. I'm not saying we should expect massive revelations or him defending himself against claims of this, that and the other, but we might learn a few things.

One other thing I would add - there have been a lot of rumours over Cortese's running of the club, and I've spoken to one source who has told me that they don't think he's the best man for the job due to his decisions - such as alienating former club legends. Not a massive issue but it can be argued you shouldn't ignore your past.

This source doesn't work at the club I'd like to point out but knows his stuff. He was once a director at a Football League club, albeit a long time ago now, but is still very much in football circles.

Just rewound it.

The full extent of what was shown as a teaser to tonights South Today:

Laura Trant "Southampton Football Club is not for sale according to it's Executive Chairman, Nicola Cortese.

The Saints chief has been talking exclusively to the BBC's Dan Roan this morning.

He stressed that the death of the club's owner, Marcus Liebherr, in the summer will not derail Southampton's future plans."

That was accompanying footage of NC showing Dan Roan round the training ground.

Then NC himself talking direct to camera

"The club is not for sale and the commitments even after Marcus passed away is exactly the same, nothing has changed, we had, obviously with Marcus passing away surprisingly, one or two weeks where everything slowed down for understandable reasons but now we are full back on schedule and highly motivated"

More in South Today tonight.

I wonder who will be first with 'well he would say that wouldn't he', which seems to be the standard response by some to anything positive the bloke does.

I know the cause of death thread was locked but would still be interested to know what it was as the 'surprising' comment from NC would seem to directly rule out any long term illness.

Not necessarily. You can have long term illnesses which doctors expect to be manageable. Without unseemly speculating on ML's state of health, it seemed to me he had some kind of jaundice for months before.

Cortese Quotes (Courtesy of Radio Solent)

"We are actually ahead of schedule, for the last 14/16 months we turned the Football club into a proper structure. That was our intention from the very beginning. Look to the quality of people we within the football club we can proudly say we're ahead of our initial plan.

The plan remains the Premier League within five years. I think it's realistic and we believe in it, our staff believes in it, the manager believes in it so there's no reason why we shouldn't achieve it.

It is eseential to get promotion this season, to be in-line with our plans. At the moment I don't want to think of a scenario where that wouldn't happen.

Over time things are becoming more familiar, with the changes we are making. In the beginning it was difficult because I implimented a lot of changes and that was difficult for the staff to understand. However, now they're starting to see the results of it, and positive results of it. There's a feel good factor out there and you can feel it - among fans, sponsors and potential partners. People are really buying into it.

I think we're in a very good position. We had a difficult start to the season but lucky the other teams are now beating each other. Now the teams ahead of us are closer and we're convinced that we're going to win this League. We want to get automatic promotion. If you could guarantee me promotion via the play-offs that would be great for the fans, but I think the play-offs would kill me so I'd rather automatic promotion.

Nigel Atkins is doing great. This isn't just my perception, if you speak to staff around the training ground they'll tell you he's a great communicator and motivator and I honestly believe we made a very good choice and I think I can have a very long term working relationship with him.

He's changed the attitude. His personality, his way of being, it's motiviated people. People who haven't been here for a while, they come down here and they say 'it's a completely different atmosphere'. Our style of play is about to change as well, obviously it needs a bit more work and that's what Nigel has been saying. We're always looking at ways of improving ourselves and he's a man with a plan. If plan A doesn't work, he's got a plan B. That's the main change he's made in this very short period.

(On development)

It's as important as getting promoted to the Championship, and ultimately the Premier League. It's part of our vision, it's part of our plans to heavily invest in the development of the club. The staff has been increased, top people, coaches, nutritionists, all the specialists, even for our development squad not just the first team. That obviously helps us develop the players, the talent of the players and to recruit them as well. We want to recruit at a young age and take them through the ranks to become first team footballers.

Look at Barcelona compared to Real Madrid, who've spent over EUR300 million on transfers. They beat them with players who'd come through the ranks. There were nine players from their academy beating a very expensive Real Madrid. This is what we want to achieve.

We want to go into the Premier League to battle, not struggle. We want to achieve something there. We believe we can do that whilst being financial sound by developing players for our first team.

We are investing into a complete new training centre. We call it a centre of excellence as that's what we want it to become..."

(On Lallana..)

"There's currently no pressure on Adam or on us. We are not a selling club, I can't see any of the players leaving in January. Definitely players we want to keep here, and players we hope would want to commit their long term future to us. I can't see a possibility we would sell him in January."

(on a new contract?)

"It depends on a lot of factors. We expect him to keep his focus on the football and all the rest will be sorted within the next couple of months."

(On Oxlade Chamberlin)

"He's not going to go anywhere in January. We're talking about a very young player in the first year of a professional contract. We'll have to cope with the rumours and we have to help the kid cope with the rumours. However he's very well looked after and I don't think he'd wish to be anywhere else than here. We're very proud to see the progress he's made in such a short period. A year ago no-one was talking about him, he wasn't even close to the first team… but when he got the first team call he did great. There's still a lot for him to learn, he's aware of that so it's important. We've got got here a great prospect for the future, but not the transfer market."

So, we spend in January at a level to GUARANTEE promotion?

PS what a rubbish 'exclusive'

Sorry, have you got an interview with Nicola Cortese regarding Alan Pardew's sacking, sale rumours, Adam Lallana, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and more?

No? Didn't think so. As exclusives go, it's not that bad at all. We've not heard this level of comment from Cortese since he came to the club, so I wouldn't be so quick to slag it off.

Nice to see the bit about not being a selling club but I wonder how well that will stand up if one of the big PL teams come in for one of our stars we might not want to sell but the player may have other ideas.

Nice big up of Nigel even if doesn't quite tee up to what I'm seeing on the pitch. It's still good to see the chairman being supportive. Big pressure for Nigel though as we all knew promotion this season or the sh it hits the fan. Don't think Nigel will survive if we don't get promoted.

Interesting read. Pretty much covers most of the rumours going around which once again turn out to be ********. Not up for sale, players not leaving, the atmosphere at the club is better, people think Adkins is doing well, think we can and will get auto promotion and still have the 5 year plan. But the thing that stands out most for me is the comment about doing something in the PL. Nice positive stuff.

But i wonder what people will make up next week. That he cancelled xmas or something no doubt.
