Saint Keith Posted 6 December, 2010 Posted 6 December, 2010 (edited) wifes laptop has stopped connecting to internet in the last couple of weeks. its seeing my network, but is showing limited/no connectivty. its says its not returning an ip address. ive checked the lan settings to automatic, and that they are exactly the same settings as mine, but no luck ive checked my router and it says she is not connected. all 3 other laptops are connected fine hers is using an intel 4965AGN wireless. i tried resetting everything to default as well, but no luck. its seems to have started when i switched her to chrome, but for some reason ie has been deleted so i cant roll back to that needs some help on this one Edited 6 December, 2010 by Saint Keith
Marsdinho Posted 6 December, 2010 Posted 6 December, 2010 I guess the first thing to try is to restore the laptop to a previous state, using system Restore. It may not fix the problem, but its worth a try, doesn't take long and could save you a lot of stress. These instructions are for Windows XP, but it looks roughly the same in all operating systems. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084
St Chalet Posted 6 December, 2010 Posted 6 December, 2010 Which OS are you running? Do you have any repeater units? Are you using DHCP to assign IP?
Jimmy_D Posted 6 December, 2010 Posted 6 December, 2010 Have you tried right clicking on the icon in the tray (the one that's saying limited/no connectivity) and selecting Diagnose/Repair Connection?
thesaint sfc Posted 7 December, 2010 Posted 7 December, 2010 She hasn't setup an IP address or something like that by chance? Could be worth disabling the wireless adapter and re-enabling, or if Windows XP you could run http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Liquidshokk Posted 7 December, 2010 Posted 7 December, 2010 (edited) I assume the routers been hard rebooted. Tried safe mode with networking incase a program/service is blocking drivers?? Someone I know's PC had a virus once that all but uninstalled IE so that I was unable to download a repair program to get rid of the virus. Could try setting the IP address manually if you know what address range the other devices are on... Edited 7 December, 2010 by Liquidshokk

Weston Super Saint Posted 7 December, 2010 Posted 7 December, 2010 Quality! I am sure your response has helped the OP massively. ****** If he follows the instructions to the letter he will never have connection problems again. Much more helpful than having to come on here every couple of weeks to solve yet another windo$e problem
badgerx16 Posted 7 December, 2010 Posted 7 December, 2010 If he follows the instructions to the letter he will never have connection problems again. Provided the issue isn't with his router, or his ISP, or there's a power cut, or somebody mistook the Mac for a doorstop, ( easily done ).
Saint Keith Posted 20 December, 2010 Author Posted 20 December, 2010 ok, still got the same problem. i did the ipconfig renew bit, hasnt worked, ivve done a system restore on it back to september, whcih hasnt worked, apart from shes got ie back showing again from what i can make out, it seems to be generating an ip address that isnt one that matches my router. ip adress on my netgear router are normally 192.168.0.1 to 6, but hers is showing something different. its a standard netgear router and all the other laptops are fine any ideas on how i can get it to use the right ip address, or if there is any other problem? edit. ip address showing on hers is 169.254.72.15 CONFUSED!
