At home to BLACKPOOL

I know it's really exiting for our humble little lower league team to play host to the big shot mega stars from the Premier League. I imagine the whole town will be buzzing with the glamour of the big boys dropping down to our level.

The local bakers will be planning their commemorative gingerbread men as we speak.

I'm sure the town mayor will be on all the news reports on third round day talking about how fantastic is is to be able see superstar players we could only dream of pulling on a saints kit like Jason Euell and Stephen Crainey turning out on our little pitch.

We just need to take inspiration from the likes of Ronnie Radford and Micky Thomas and hope we can pull off the impossible.

I love fans who get excited about the prospect of Manchester United at home. Here is a message for them.

F U C K Off and watch United then, and buy a house in St Albans with all their other fans.

I pay to watch Southampton.

Indeed.Had we drawn the mancs then I would probably give it a wide berth to avoid it.I detest those grasping, cheating -normal rules don't apply to us - prima donna c^nts, and for the timebeing would prefer to pay to watch us play in our real world and get out of this division.Blackpool however is a match against another real club in the real world.Whats more,we actually stand a chance of winning..

That some gimpoids on here get a semi on at the idea of playing Blackpool in the 3rd Rd of the FAC comes as no surprise.

That Holloway has his team playing a refreshingly bright style is not in doubt but as a season ticket holder I've no, none, nada, zip, zilch, nowt interested in shelling out on tickets/travel for a game that even my nipper, who at 8 loves all things Saints, went "meh" at.

The league is all that matters but no doubt the usual gimps won't understand that and think it's 2003 all over again!

Oh dear you really do sound a very sad chap. This is a great draw - a good chance to test our selves against a premiership outfit - a fantastic opportunity. I'm going thanks - you stay home and be miserable. You must have an amazingly exciting life if you follow Saints and can't be bothered with this game - good luck to you.....

By the way what are you going to when we are in Prem and all these teams aren't Liverpool, Chelsea or Man U come to our place - turn you nose up ???? Take it you're not going to most of the rest of our home games this year either - can't see a team in that lot that will get you out of bed!!!

Be positive for Christ sake and be proud and pleased that we are still in the cup.....

Football is a leisure pursuit supposed to provide entertainment. This game should provide a good open competitive match, proper Cup tie and VFM, and hopefully we will win 3-2 and go home happy at seeing our team win no matter against who. If we lose no big deal concentrate on the League. Perfect draw IMO!

What part of "season ticket holder" confused you?

I genuinely pity those who have gotten moist and the prospect of playing Blackpool in the FAC 3rd. I'm not sure what's sadder the moist ones who think it's some sort of duty, akin to parenthood, to attend every game or those who actually think the FAC matters at all.

All that matters this season is promotion and the cup is a distraction and leads to fixture congestion which, IMHO, cost us a play off place last season.

Can't believe how negative some people on here are. We've drawn a Prem team that are playing well and we're at home. They will bring a large crowd. If we strengthen and play to the best of the team ability we shall see a good game of football. It will be quite some feat to beat them, but a loss will be no hardship, so it's a great draw - bring it on.

agree entirely...Premiership side at home, and they'll probably field a reserve-ish side as they have two important league games either side of us...this is a good chance to progress....game on

Of course it will.

They are in the top half of the Premier League. We are 8th in League One.

Thanks for clearing that up, for a moment I was having delusions of grandeur.

I'm fairly pleased with the draw and it should be a decent game.

what makes me cringe is the countless fans on here moaning about drawing a home tie in the third round of FA Cup against top flight opposition. OK its no glamour club, but its the FA cup, we are still in it and we can win this game. "Come to watch united, you've only come to watch united" fits many of our fans perfectly.

Yes but we have had the biggest gates of the rounds one and two.

A chance to 'welcome' back Ormerod, Euell and Crainey!

Relatively pleased with the draw in truth.

Blackpool will be favourites, and rightly so, but I think we can give them a good game.

They'll come here and attack, which could play into our hands.

A potential upset on the cards? Who knows, but it all makes for a great cup contest.

Sweet. It's winnable, especially at home. Blackpool may rest players. How embarassing would it be though if we won and the papers labeled it a "giant killing". :|

This is just it. Frankly it's embarassing to be playing a home game against Blackpool with us as the underdogs and potential giant killers. If we win it wouldn't be something to sing about, if we lose it'd just depress me thinking we lost to a noddy club like Blackpool. That said I want a result either way on the day (preferably a Saints defeat) because we really don't need a sideshow this season. All that matters is the league.

Excellent draw for Saints, price it right and there should be a decent crowd and an entertaining match; if we win it will be a big morale boost to beat a Prem team, if not we go out to a team two leagues above and concentrate on the league -win/win - only downside I can see is a possible replay which we really could do without.

Spare a thought for Dover! They've won through five rounds, comfortably beating two league sides in rounds 1 and 2 and are in the third round for the first time in their history ... they get drawn at Huddersfield away! Worst-case scenario!

Miles away, very difficult game, and limited TV/media appeal. Huddersfield have had less than 4000 for their two previous games in the cup this season. Dover will prob take a 1000+ up there but it's a massive anti-climax after Saturday, to reach the third round and then not to receive a financial windfall is a right kick in the wotsits.

I would rather pay to watch us play Blackpool than have to stump up £30 plus to watch us get totally battered by a united or Chelsea. We have a chance of winning this one although they will still be heavy favourites.

To all those whining that it is a **** draw then surely you are supporting the wrong team, we are league one so get used to it.

So, in the albeit unlikely circumstances, if Saints were to go on a great run and make it to the quarter or semi finals, you would have no interest in going and only those you'd consider "sad" would attend? Am I correct?

Huh? The only moist person around here seems to be you slathering and dribbling at your keyboard calling other people gimpoid etc. Nobody's getting overly excited but it's an interesting fixture in that it pits us against Premiership opposition whilst avoiding the big guns. Playing the latter isn't going to tell us much we don't already know, but Blackpool are probably a better gauge of how far we need to go to be competitive in that division.

FWIW I do think that with our resources the cup is a diversion from our main task this season, but as we are in it why not enjoy it? So maybe Arsenal or MU away in the next round to help pay for our January signings!

I dont understand people saying "cant be bothered" or "its only Blackpool so I wont be going" etc. Honestly I just dont comprehend them. I go to watch Southampton play football against whoever. This time we have a chance to play Premiership opposition, and see how we stack up against them. I support Saints not Mnaure, Chelski, ETC.

I doubt if it's Blackpool in themselves that are creating apathy, it's what they represent, a side who were in the same league as us not 2 full seasons ago, probably considered as inferior to us at that time because many thought we'd finish above them.We look at where we are and where they are

and it brings about a certain train of thought at least if not self pity.

Ha ha!! It's great that everyone is entitled to their own opinion on here, yet so many people appear to get quite angry with other peoples points of view.

I fall into the old school - I still get really excited about the FACup, memories of taking the tranny to school to listen to the 3rd round draw in the bikesheds at lunchtime etc etc. Like Dickyhale I was urging 55 to come out of the "hat" for every home team. I'm already looking forward to seeing Blackpool at SMS and why shouldn't we win? In my office there is a Chelsea ST holder who only gets excited after the 6th round, A Newcastle fan who is sh**ing himself about the visit to Stevenage and a Stoke fan who's convinced they can win the Cup and finish in the top 6.

I really think we could cause a few upsets this year and go a long way.

Not a bad draw IMO. Underdogs at home v premiership, however hard it may be to accept our role in that. This is when the cup gets exciting .. playing teams from higher divisions, as opposed to those from below.

So as long as they open the kingsland I'll be going.

+1. And to think I used to always think I was the only one who got excited about taking the tranny into the bikesheds at lunchtime.

Not sure I agree. They've done well, but it's weird given the players they've got. /QUOTE]

Blackpool have nothing to lose in the Premier League, don't think they've spent silly money so they'll reap more than they've sown.

There can't be much pressure on their lads and the manager has kicked about a bit, alternating success and failure.Perhaps Blackpool is just an ideal combination of a manager who knows roughly what he's doing and a set of players receptive to his methods, free all that from must win stress and you've a going concern.

One of the first FA Cup games I ever saw was Saints v mighty Blackpool in 1959. As now Blackpool were in the first division and Saints the third, and Blackpool had Stanley Matthews playing age 43. The crowd jammed in to the Dell was over 29,000.

It's sad but times have changed and I wouldn't expect anything like that crowd or atmosphere this time but it's funny what goes around comes around

They're not looking forward to it either! Why don't we just both agree to give it a miss and play the U18s?

Come on guys, it's the FA Cup! The best competition in the world! We have a lower PL team at home, a chance of an upset and a we get to see our boys test themselves against NPC and a few PL quality players. I'll be there for certain - get behind the lads!

Very disappointing but at least it's at home again! There was a time 3/4 years ago when I wouldn't have got out of bed to watch a team called Blackpool now they're two leagues better than us so some might regard this is as a dream tie. Me? I can't be Rrsed to get out of bed to watch a bunch of Belicia beacons running about with a donkey in tow.

Ah well, we were never going to win it anyway.

No one is getting moist, just some of us fans actually regard the FA Cup is an intricate part of the football season. It's not a side show, a distraction, a penalty or an afterthought. For me and others the FA Cup is just as important as the league. In the cold light of day a few years from now all anyone will really remember of the 2009/10 season is the Wembley appearance and the FA Cup cup defeat. Cup runs create history for the club. For those not fussed by the cup, three words "Barry Horne screamer"

Surely it will only be on one channel??

I'm sure FC United against the skates will be on telly too if they get past Brighton.

No, the telly will go nuts about Man U v Liverpool (yawn) , which once again shows the pundits know nothing about being a fan. Giant-killing is what the cup is about , not yet another boring premiership v premiership game.

I would be suprised if that game isnt on the telly. As the rights to show it will prolly be on the BBC or ITV im not suprised as its not often that they get to show a Prem v Prem game so can understand them showing it above others.

That said, I agree with you in that the possible giant killing game is much better for the neutrals who most of which have access to sky or a local pub showing Prem v Prem games week in week out.

Our game, although doesnt screem out as being a must watch for even the 2 sets of supporters involved does at least provide the chance of a league 1 team upseting a prem team. Not enough to put it as a tv match though.

Even if FC United get through I cant see them against Pompey being a TV match either. The idea of a giant killing has to have some kind of chance that it can be pulled off and the way Pompey have played this season I wouldnt give FC United much of a chance at all. Brighton might just about have a chance but again thats only good telly to the more local.

Im not sure of the other games would actually be highlighted as being marked for the tv either. There are not many that look like they could boost the tv ratings for who ever is showing them and thats all the tv companys care about unfortunatly.

I think it is great that this match is unlikely to be on telly. And I am also very pleased that we are generally of low profile interest to the media (thanks also to Nicola for banning their photographers). They only report negative things, or shopwindow our better players for higher league clubs to snatch.

I would rather we quietly edged our way into the CCC under the noses of the press (especially The Sin) and Sky.
