wireless router

Which router and I'll get you the exact instructions. In simple terms, you need to log on to the admin screen of the router by entering the IP Address into the address bar in internet explorer.

Once you've done that and the admin screen loads, login and look for Wireless Security. It should be pretty self explanatory from there.....

On your laptop (which needs to be connected to the wireless router in question, wither wirelessly or wired) go to- start-run and type in cmd

In the black box type in ipconfig

Make a note of your default gateway. (probably 192.168.0.1 or something?)

Type that address into Internet Explorer

You should be prompted for login, which in my experience with Belkin is either both blank, admin admin, or admin for u/n and no password......

When you get past this screen, report back what options you have, or tell me the exact router and i will be able to talk you through it

And, in order to choose between WEP, WPA and WPA2, you'll need to know the wireles capabilities of the devices you want to allow to connect, wont you?

And, if you've got a real problem with people pinching your bandwidth, the Belkin devices I use (repeaters, not routers) allow MAC address filtering.

NOBODY steals my bandwidth, it's too expensive down here.
