Hatch Posted 24 November, 2010 Share Posted 24 November, 2010 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-11827202 Well, it's not there any more as local yoof have spray painted over it. I bet the property owner is well chuffed. (assuming it was a genuine Banksy)

Macey_J2 Posted 24 November, 2010 Share Posted 24 November, 2010 Only yesterday the Echo reported about this image on a wall in B.V, and its already been defaced! Image: http://ventnorblog.com/copy_images/no-future-banksy-wooster.jpg Todays story: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/8684295.Banksy_work_of_art_ruined/?ref=mr Was supposedly worth 20k, randomly the Echo say "It is believed the urban warrior sprayed his iconic stencil en route to the Isle of Wight"! Questionable, seeing as the artists' identity is unknown! I think its sad a jealous individual has white washed the work.
Dog Posted 24 November, 2010 Share Posted 24 November, 2010 Is this true?? If so, he (Banksy) should be prosecuted for criminal damage.

Questionable, seeing as the artists' identity is unknown! I think its sad a jealous individual has white washed the work. It is sad it has been covered up and interestingly on the BBC news at lunchtime they put the value at up to £35k so clearly inflation is at work but consider it from another angle. Was it defacing the plain wall with the image first? If he did not have the owners permission perhaps the image could be construed simply as graffiti on private property by others? Why does the artist called Banksy not divulge his name, is it to maintain a mystique and drive up the price of his images or is it fear of being prosecuted or is it he is simply up himself ? What right does he have to impose his idea of art on others?
toofarnorth Posted 24 November, 2010 Share Posted 24 November, 2010 Surely someone with appropriate expertise could restore that quite easily, as it looks like it's only a thin layer of paint. Would be a shame to lose it as long as the permission of the home owner is sought first.

rallyboy Posted 24 November, 2010 Share Posted 24 November, 2010 I'm not sure that the systematic sexual, physical and mental abuse case you refer to was done as an art installation, so criticising it on creative grounds would be wrong. Why couldn't he just do some watercolours of thatched stuff and bowls of fruit?

Hamilton Saint Posted 24 November, 2010 Share Posted 24 November, 2010 What bothers me is this strange locution in the Echo article: "the Daily Echo can this morning reveal". And the author refers to the image as a "masterpiece". Really?
st alex Posted 24 November, 2010 Share Posted 24 November, 2010 No one cares about street art unless its a Banksy. I pointed out the stencil a couple of months ago on the grafitti thread, when I walked past it and recognised it from an image I saw on the web. It didn't take 2 months to verify it since it was on Banksy's website way back then, it's just that media have only just noticed it and brought it to the attention of morons who've now painted over it. Although the original could have been interpreted as being an insult to Bevois Valley or Southampton, to say that those from the area have 'no future' is quite discriminatory. In all fairness Alpine, replace West Quay with 'Any other shopping centre' and you've just described pretty much every town or city in the UK. Brings back fond memories of when I was excited in November 2004, looking forward to Xmas and discovering Southampton was going to have a German Christmas MArket, only to read on the letters page of the Echo : "If I wanted to look at a row of wooden sheds, I would have gone to B & Q"
benjii Posted 24 November, 2010 Share Posted 24 November, 2010 Look, I quite like that Banksy piece so I would have preferred it if it hadn't been amended, but that is my purely subjective relative viewpoint on the two "works". The fact is - and this is correct and if you don't agree you're completely missing the point - Banksy, or any fans thereof, have no moral recourse whatsoever against whoever defaced this. Banksy makes his statements on people's property without warning or endorsement. If someone chooses to make a statement on his works then that's just tough luck. End of story. As for the comments about Southampton, this isn't the first time a Banksy has been defaced and it won't be the last. He is from Bristol and his work on Park Street in Bristol has been splatted by blue paint.
