Talking of the match, we were unlucky. We've certainly played alot worse and won. nothing seemed to be going our way and the ball just didn't want to drop into the right places.

Hammond was quality, and was everywhere. Davis too exceptional.

Jaidi looked knackered after an hour

and Lambert needs to be dropped asap. He didn't contribute anythign last night, and hasn't for a couple of games now. He needs to pull his socks up and pretty quickly!

Also, why was Barnard taken off and not Lambert? (This isn't a Lambert bashing post) but as soon as LB was replaced, the whole shape of the team went out the window.

Only an idiot would disagree.

Don't foget these are the same Saints fans the moaned like hell about Rasiac not running around like a headless chicken when he was scoring a goal or two every week for us or will tell you that Stern John was total garbage the whole time he was here. Saints fans are certainly not logical when it comes to strikers in the last few years.

Surprised nobody has mentioned that Lambert was always marked by two Brighton players when the ball came to him in the air. Good tactics by Poyet and very hard to counteract although in theory it should leave one of our other players without a marker. no world class saves required from their slow motion keeper - reckon that the ball was in his possession for 15% of the game without any response from the ref. When Kelvin took a couple of extra seconds to take a goal kick the ref was on him like a ton of bricks. Curious or what? Overall not a bad result against a pretty nasty side and a fabulous penalty save by Davis.

The Brighton keeper can be as slow as he likes when the ball is in open play. It's up to the forwards to close him down.

Depends whether he has the ball in his hands or not, think there's a 6 second maximum for that.

Do you know what "in open play" means?

Just back. One of the best 0-0 draws you will ever see. Saints by far the better side first half but couldn't score (good defending by B&HA).

Second half they came at us and at times we were rocking a bit.

To those not there 0-0 will sound disappointing but just like Saturday when 4-1 sounded great to those not there then this result is better than it looks.

Brighton are no mugs.

Good atmosphere tonight, an old fashioned match with the crowd really up for it.

Downers? Chamberlain was shackled, Lambert again not quite there.

Positives? Lallana at times looked awesome.

This, saved me writing it.

Ok seen the 18 minutes of highlights, ours wasn't an obvious penalty, think Lallana fell over his own feet and the ball had already gone.Lambert should have scored with that free header, Lallana should have done better when set up by Morgan and Richardson. Ankergren is a good keeper.

Thought we had far too many men in their box sometimes, all panic and nothing clinical. We need to improve in front of goal.

Bit slow in coming but here's my tuppence worth...

Really enjoyable game that Saints dominated for the first half from about 8 minutes onwards. We set oursleves up to combat Brighton's preferred tactics and it worked a treat but we managed this without compromising our own attacking possibilities. We should have had a penalty and so were bloody unlucky not to be ahead at half-time. Unfortunately the contact was on the blindside of the linesman which presumably is the only reason we didn't get it as he clearly wasn't shy in flagging (apart from for offsides). I think Brighton managed two efforts from outside the box in the first half and that was really it apart from a couple of corners. Only some heroic defending stopped Lallana from bagging one. The accusations of time wasting against their goalie are ********. He wasn't deliberately time wasting he just didn't have a clue what to do for the first 60 minutes as we took their preferred options away from them.

At the start of the second half we continued in much the same vein and should have scored when Richardson set up Lambert. He really should have buried his header - it was the kind of chance you would go mad at a lesser playing for missing the target from. Very frustrating. The tone of the game changed a bit when Brighton stuck on a bigger striker and started to play direct. A few of our players started to look a little ragged and the game opened up. I've seen Poyet claiming that they eventually opened us up with their passing. That's nonsense; they created a few chances towards the end because they managed to finally pick up some second balls from their forwards. The pen looked like the wrong decision, FWIW, but thanks to Super Kelv it didn't matter (although it did make the Lallana incident in the first half more annoying). We had a great chance towards the end when Lallana tried to play Guly in having broken from midfield; IMO, and it's easy to say after the event, but in the goalscoring form Lallana is in he should have shot towards the far post himself.

So, all in all, I would say we were unlucky not to win; we should've had a penalty and we created the clearest chance of the match when Lambert headed over.

I think we really need to press on form here though, and a minimum of 10 points from the next four games has to be the target if we're going to claw ourselves into the top 2. I'm not an advocate of dropping Lambert at the moment because he is still a dangerous player and did contribute last night but he really has lost his touch in front of goal - I think the main target for Jan has to be a striker to make him compete for his place. Realistically we're not going to start with Barnard and Connolly (who will probably pay a visit to the treatment room sometime soon, whilst arguably being our best forward), and Guly is not doing enough to justify starting ahead of Lambert.

Just back, yesterday performances shows we are a work in progress; great energy, great passing and build up, great individual performances but still a bit unrefined in front of goal.

Bad traffic?

Just seen the highlights

Never a pen for Brighton such a bad dive.

But didn`t really think Lallana`s was a pen tbh.

Sounded one way and looked that way on the highlights.

If they are ment to be the best in the league, we have nothing to fear.

Agree with most of the posts on here, one of the best games I've seen in a long time.

Regarding Rickie, did anyone else see Adkins' comments in the programme?

"Rickie Lambert who artfully laid on Lee's goal is hopefully now clear of niggling injuries that have plagued him since pre season, and we anticipate Rickie gaining in strength, fitness and confidence as the race continues"

Don't know if this is a bit of PR considering Rickie's form, or whether his pre-season injuries really are still dogging him?

One other thing, did anyone else think we looked completely clueless whenever we had a throw-in? Richardson in particular seemed to take about 5 mins to decide who to throw it to.

I've been more impressed by Butterfied than Richardson so far. Holmes did a couple of blatant foul throws that the ref didn't care about!

Thanks. I was convinced I must be going blind last night.

The extended highlights have been put up on the BBC iPlayer.

They must have been edited by a Seaweed fan because they make it out to be a closer game than it was, i.e. they failed to include the trip on Adam, and a few other incidents in their box (the flick from a corner in the 1st half that went across the 6 yd box, the cross from AOX in the 2nd across the 6 yd box, both just needed somebody to attack the ball). yet imo they include EVERY attack they had.

Rickie header in the second half is a bad miss.

The only positive thing I can say about brighton is that they get alot of players back in the 6yd box when defending.

Also with the pen they always say you can tell from the players reaction, look at the Brighton players, not one serious appeal, one player looks towards the ref more in hope than anything, but that it it. Seemed minimal contact from Dickson.

Shame they didn't show Jaidis run and header, that was funny.

All these incidents of which you speak are on the 18 minutes of highlights on SaintsPlayer, complete with Solent commentary.

Maybe its a warning that he cant rely on the 'I'm injured Guv' excuse for not scoring for much longer.

Chez, agree with some of your marks but Chamberlin a 2 and Jaidi an 8? I really didn't see it like that. Chamberlin wasn't great but I would still give him a 6 or a 7. He made a few decent runs. Jaidi was solid in the first half but gave the ball away too much in the 2nd. 6 at best IMO.

Chamberlin has set extremely high standards since he has joined the first team and I refuse to score players making allowances for age or inury or anything really. What I saw was a player that cracked under pressure a little. He was tightly marked in the first half, but I lost count of the number of times he miscontrolled. Also pretty much every single run he went on he lost the ball, either runing straight into the fullback or miscontrolling. He had much more room in the second half, but failed to use it. Again his first touch let him down on several occasions, and there were times when I felt he should have been sharper when the ball was bouncing. He did tire very quickly and shoudk have bene subbed earlier.

Jardi gets so much stick for poor passing from the back yet on Tuesday he only gave it away badly once IMO. Fonte made a much bigger mistake in the second half, when dribblimg out from the back that could have lead to him being sent off, but his reputation as a `great' player means people ignore his mistakes. I thought Jaidi's control and passing was spot on. He was very calm and kept it short all the time. Richardson, for example dinked little balls forward aimlessly on two or three occassions, but no one points to that. Jaidi just has a bad reputation as a poor ball player. OK so he not a natural, but judge him on each game not what has gone before.

Each to their own of course.

I really don't see why everyone started getting o nthe brighton keeper's back, he was a damned sight quicker at taking goal kicks than some keepers i've seen at SMS this season, especially Orient and Plymouths!!

likewise, but it din't half put him off and get the Saints side pumped up. More of that hostile abuse of oponents required at SMS IMO. The number skates that get away with no abuse amazes me. There is either apathy or a complete lack of knowledge about our oponents.

Agreed. Excellent play from the guy and as soon as it went out wide all I wanted was a lofted cross and you just knew he'd get his head on it.

Yes it was, I had a little moment when my brian had to remind itself it was watching professional football and not the fat fat bloke from finance doing one of his runs at the works 6 a-side.

We don't put nearly enough pressure on visiting defences at SMS. We get a corner, we'll usually get a quick "...clap-clap-clap-clap, the Saints" followed by an equally quick and feeble "COYR" and then, well that's about it.

You don't necessarily need to sing just make a sh*t load of noise to put the fear of Christ into the keeper/defenders who've got their backs to the crowd. It's often the same when we're attacking, most notably the Chapel, a big hostile roar lifts our players, rattles the opponents.
