CB Saint Posted 21 November, 2010 Share Posted 21 November, 2010 Does anyone remember these? I was browsing in Waterstones yesterday and they had complilations of various commando comics. Took be back to my childhood. I can remember waiting for gran to turn up on Wednesdays with that weeks new issues. Needless to say the wife was incredible annoyed and then bemused when she found me half an hour later still reading the things. Happy days

Saint_clark Posted 21 November, 2010 Share Posted 21 November, 2010 I remember one about some American soldiers that holed up with some Greeks in a villa only to find out they were weapon smugglers. Or something. I do miss them...

timebomb Posted 21 November, 2010 Share Posted 21 November, 2010 And other great lines such as - 'For you Fritz/Tommy Atkins the war is over Donner unt Blitzen Achtung, mein gott Banzai Aiiieeeee!!!!!!!' This is bizarre, I was thinking about these comics last week! The thing I wondered was, did the Germans really shout out the names of Santa's reindeer when they got very surprised? Just seems odd. mcjwills Posted 21 November, 2010 Share Posted 21 November, 2010 Won a load ,circa 50, as a booby prize in a raffle in the pub one day, so took them home and placed them by the toilet at home, the result was when anyone came round they spent at least 20 mins in the lav reading at least 1 or 2 books. CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 21 November, 2010 Share Posted 21 November, 2010 (edited) A memorable part of my 70's childhood - four a fortnight at 25p each from dear old WH Smith if memory serves. By the time I grew out of them I must have amassed many, many 100's of issues - I've often wished I'd kept them now. DC Thompson's 'Commando' had its (inferior) rivals such as the even more bloodthirsty 'War Picture Library' - I can distinctly remember a Nazi goon being stabbed so brutally you could see the bayonet enter his back & emerge from his chest - a graphic image to put before children I suppose but pretty tame compared to some of the computer games they now have. I noticed a while ago that you can get a glossy compilation book with the vintage cover art properly reproduced on a large scale - some of it surprisingly good. Dimond Geezer Posted 22 November, 2010 Share Posted 22 November, 2010 I used to buy 2 a week, along with Roy of the Rovers when I got my paper round money on a Saturday morning. I must have had over 100 of them. I've no idea what happened to them, probably gave them to a jumble sale somewhere . I blatently plagiarised 2 of them for my English O-level project. Special K Posted 22 November, 2010 Share Posted 22 November, 2010 Absolute class. Was one character called Union Jack Jackson? a hard as nails Sarge who'd single handedly take out a machine gun nest manned by half a dozen Fritzy's.
