Saints V Posh post match Thread

SOTONS EAST SIDE

Recommended Posts

Just back from the game, gave the thumbs up to a grumpy looking Guly, getting in a taxi in the Total garage just before joining the M3, although I did get a thumbs up back from him.

It was a scinilating performance, as I correctly, albeit flukely, predicted it would be in the build up thread. The only weak performance, although he did try, was Rickie up front. He still bustles about but just doesn't look like his sharp old self from last season. Everyone else though deserves a round of applause, it was a great day, even if it was fricking freezing.

Davis: Didn't have a great deal to do, didn't look like he could do much about the goal, but his distribution and shot stopping was still good. 6

Richardson: Got forward once or twice and was solid defensively. Distribution was a bit off. 7

Fonte: Good header for the goal, little power but it trickled in there. Caught me by suprise, as I assume it did everyone. Solid defensively, although once or twice looked a tad suss. 7

Jaidi: Best defender on the day, a towering prescence and won every header I can remember. Could've scored twice had they been a bit more accurate. 8

Dickson: Very impressed, I like Harding but Dickson had a good game defensively and going forward. 7

Alex O-C: Was terrorising their defence early on, never looks phased about the step up he's had to make. Confident. Did drift out of the game, was rightly subbed to rest him. 8

Hammond: My MOTM. Chappers was probably most people's MOTM but Hammond was everywhere, and showed great coolness for the assist to Chapper's goal. 9

Chaplow: Almost as good as Deano, the goal should swing it but just misses out IMO. 9

Lallana: Good skills, good game. 7

Lambert: Still looks off form, but bustled well. 6

Barnard: Still my favourite player bar Harding, a well taken goal. 8

Subs: Gin Gin Guly: looks so lazy on the ball, but good flicks, and should have had a hattrick. 8

Holmes: Very impressed, a great cameo, should play his way back into first team favour. 9

Connolly: Little chance to shine. 6

Good subs made by Adkins, looking forward to Tuesday.

I hope NA plays the same starting 11 on Tuesday and the same formation. Seaborne may have been out injured for the last couple of weeks but Jaidi today did more than enough to keep his place even if Seaborne is fit. Richardson, great and Dickson. You can see why Guly wouldn't make it in Serie A due to inconsistency and loss of concentration but worthwhile as a sub. Midfield looked excellent. Very confident this side can beat Brighton.

We were pretty clinical today, although Peterborough were intent on handing us a few birthday presents. They were probably the best footballing team we've played against this season, and I can see why they score quite a few goals; Maclean and Mackail-Smith were dangerous throughout, although Boyd was nullified by the fact he had to drop and cover their truly dreadful left-back and never really got the chance to go forward consistently. I'm surprised that no-one has yet mentioned how important Kelvin's save was from Mackail-Smith when it was 0-0. I'm not sure we'd have won if we'd gone behind today - they could have sat back and played on the break, and with the pace they had up front we could have found it difficult. Still, it's nice to have a Saturday when the only real criticism of the performance is that we didn't score seven!

Very good perfomances today from Dickson and Fonte, but top two today were Hammond and Jaidi. Hammond did most of his best work when he didn't have the ball, tackling, hassling and harrying and preventing Peterborough from getting any momentum. Yes, he gives the ball away a fair bit, but we are an easier side to play against when he's not on the field. I'd give Jaidi Man of the Match though - anybody who thought he had a poor game today is quite simply wrong. He dominated aerially and his positioning and reading of the game against two very fast players was superb. That comes with experience, pure and simple, something that Aaron Martin would not have given us. Adkins was totally right with his selection today.

I'm a firm believer in viewing every result in context, and if this is the start of a run then the Carlisle defeat will be forgotten in the same way that the Huddersfield one was. Tuesday night is a toughie, but Brighton may be having a little wobble while they work out how to play without Lua-Lua. It would be a good night for Rickie to end his barren spell...

Did I not hear somewhere that winning today means it's the longest run of consecutive home wins for 18 years??

Or did I just make that up??

Nope! you're right. Was in the echo earlier this week

''IF Saints beat Peterborough on Saturday, it will mark the first time in nearly 18 years they have won six consecutive home games in a season. ''

I'd like to put in a word for Dean Hammond, my MoM. When he plays well the whole team plays well & today he kept us moving forward time & again. Special word for Chaplow - nearly MoM, and also our two full-backs who both look to have the strength & pace to cause trouble in this league. Also a word for Jaidi, who I am not a big fan of usually, but was excellent against two nippy little strikers, & Holmes who looked very impressive again today. If only he could stay fit for more than one week in four....

My thoughts exactly (see above).

I also see Punch scored for Millwall today. Are our goals not big enough or something? ;-)

Great win! Really should have been another of our 5 goal hammerings but nobody told Guly that. Excellent all round performance, although there is still room for improvement. Jaidi is just too slow and a side which isn't complete gash will embarass him soon. Lambert still isn't firing on all cylinders, but it will happen for him eventually. Keep him in the side.

Davis - 6 Not much he could have done for their goal and had very little else to do. Still looks a tad flappy. Great save first half.

Richardson - 8 Is starting to look much more comfortable and sharper.

Jaidi - 6 Good in the air as always, but feck me he has the pace and agility of sap running down a tree trunk.

Fonte - 8 Class defending and a well taken goal

Dickson - 6 A couple of decent crosses but gave the ball away a fair bit. Needs more games to prove his worth.

AOC - 7 Didn't have a jaw dropping game, but worried them with his pace

Chaplow - 8 MOTM Ran the midfield and edge Hammond because of his goal. Lucky not to get a red for a 2 footed lunge second half.

Hammond - 8 A strong captains performance.

Lallana - 8 Took this p*ss all afternoon

Barnard - 8 Industrious and scored a belting goal.

Lambert - 6 Just doesn't look like scored. Decent assist though.

Subs:

Guly - 6 Well taken first goal, but fluffed a 1-on-1 BWP would have been proud of. Not all that effective.

Holmes - 8 Had an excellent game. Think he took the free kick that lead to one of the goals.

Connolly - n/a Didn't really have time to make much impact.

Also, as someone who actually goes to games the atmosphere today before half time was terrible, no noise at all.

Why - did you go to the toilet before half time or were you in Chapel / Peterboro section?

Kingsland / Northam corner was fantastic first half - died off a little in the second but great first half atmosphere.

Kingsland ST holder towards the Northam, quietest since our last relegation, in the first half. Second half was better, but hope for more noise on Tuesday.

Nope, I checked my Season ticket and it deffo says Kingsland block 34. Was there some kind of parallel universe in the vicinity of St Mary's this afternoon?

Davis - 7 - a great save at 0-0 but a couple of dodgy moments. distribution better today.

Dickson - 8 - didn't rate him after seeing him in the cherries cup game but today thought he was immense. great defensively, great work-rate, some great tackles and brilliant cross for the 2nd. very impressed.

Jaidi - 8 - again, don't usually rate him but today he was brilliant. experience told as he bossed their strikers. won everything in the air and was even pretty good on the floor!

Fonte - 7 - not one of his better performances at the back but seems to have a habit of scoring recently! think he's scored in each of the last 3 home league games. eventhough he wasnt at his best, a great performance at this level.

Richardson - 8 - very impressed. good both defensively and going forward. looks better than butterfield now he's settled in.

Lallana - 8 - fantastic work-rate, especially towards the end of that first half. great skill and performance as usual.

Hammond - 8 - real captain's performance. pretty much ran the game in midfield. fantastic cross for the 3rd goal.

Chaplow - 7.5 - worked well in midfield and took his goal very well but didn't seem to be involved much in the first half.

Chamberlain - 6 - one good run at the start but otherwise didn't do much at all. can be excused due to age. rightly subbed.

Lambert - 6 - not back to his usual self but getting there. great ball for first goal.

Barnard - 8 - worked hard as usual and WHAT A GOAL!!!! best individual goal i've seen at St. Mary's since Connolly's against Norwich last season. don't know why he was taken off. hope it was just a precaution seeing as we were 2-0 up when the sub was planned.

Guly - 7 - was good in patches and made some good runs. should've taken more chances. needs to be more consistent and not mess around on the ball and not pass for ages.

Holmes - 8 - brilliant, hard-working, quality performance. great cross for the 4th

Connolly - 7 - can't really mark cos can't remember him really touching it.

MOTM - Richardson/Dickson - can't think of a particular reason but was just impressed with them for 90 mins.

Overall - 9 - fantastic stuff, keep it up for tues!

Glad I went to the game today! Haven't been since the start of the season, and we appear to have come on a bit since then.

Davis: 6. Didn't have a lot to do, flapped at a couple of crosses but otherwise solid.

Frazer: 7. Didn't realise how solid the guy is! He's a well built fella, and worked very hard both in defence and attack. Impressed.

Jaidi: 7. Best game I've seen him play, didn't look knackered or old as he usually does when I see him play, passing is terrible but that's why he's a CB..

Jose: 7. Had a bit of a mare first half, missed clearances and got done over by their attack a couple times but appeared motivated in the second half and the goal did him wonders.

Dickson: 7. Again, solid both going forward and back. Not as influential as Frazer on the right but good showing nonetheless.

Adam: 9. The guy's unreal, effortlessly outplaying them at points, and at others running around as if he's got boundless energy winning the ball back. That episode at the end of the first half when he chased everyone on the ball was astounding.

Dean: 7. What he lacks in pace, he makes up in energy and enthusiasm. Good ball winner and leader.

Chaps: 7. Thought he looked quite quiet for long periods of the game. Took his goal really well, and as someone sat near me said: 'He's always in the box at the right time, at both ends.' Cleared up lots of crosses in our box and appeared when it mattered for the goal.

Alex O-C: 8. Another magic set of pacey feet from the academy. Had the full backs in his pockets all day, shame no one got on the end of his crosses. Great talent.

Rickie: 6. Game quite often passed him by. Frustrating performance. I don't doubt the guy's ability, he struck a great free kick in the first half that hit the side netting. But he desperately needs a few goals from open play to get his confidence back. Nice new boots too.

Lee: 8. Great first touch and his ability to hold up the ball sometimes made him look like he was doing the work of both strikers. Disappointed to see him subbed but hey ho. Took his goal brilliantly, great strike can't wait to see it tonight.

Subs:

Guly: 6/7. Show's great one touch ability, some of his flicks were awesome. Showed guile and guts to barge their full back off the ball and win it back. He's learning! Good goal, but should've buried his one on one.

Lee Holmes: 6/7. Really rate the guy, just hope he gets a run free of injury. Showed bottle and confidence that obviously has been coming through to Adkins in training. Hopefully he'll get better the more games he plays. Just as long as he's free from the treatment table.

Having got home had a very nice dinner accompanied by a spectacular Cote du Rhone, the view on today's game has remained the same from the moment I walked out of the stadium. That was was a disciplined thrashing of a team that until last week was having fun in this league. I felt that the Posh spent so much time nullifying Lallana that they metaphorically forgot about our other 9 outfield players.

My favourite goal of the afternoon was Chaplows, they so did not see that coming.

That Guly has some acceleration for a big chap.

My first choice at right back would still be Butterfield, his cross field distribution is consistently sublime.

Jaidi must be like playing against a very old New Forest Oak, one of the Posh players was trying to get around him and he must have thought "jeez how much of this guy is there!).

Someone said above how quiet the crowd was, I noticed this a few weeks ago. But then I thought how Highbury was known as the Library, now no one can argue that at times Arsenal's passing football is a pleasure to watch, I think that so many of us get engrossed in the game that we forget to get vociferous. What you do hear a lot more of is appreciative applause.

Tuesdays game will be the benchmark of where we are.

Well done lads

Wish there was more of lively atmosphere around the dug out.. No singing and noone looks particularly interested. Got blanked today when I turned to guy next to me and commented on how good barnards goal was. He didn't even look at me. Awkward.

You might have had a look in your eye of "Fancy dinner after the game".

And they'd be right.

He won everything in the air and his link up play as excellent.

Yes - I don't understand the negative comments about Lambert either. He looked to me like he was beginning to get back to his best. He's not there yet - but getting there.

And that's what makes opinion such fun - Jaidi certainly didn't win every tackle (if any) and was found wanting on many occasions when they attacked. Just glad they didn't capitalise on those attacks.

Fonte scored, and I don't remember him being responsible for their goal, I thought it was Jaidi. Will be interested to see it on the League One show now.

Finally, when watching the League one show, was Barnard offside for the first?

PS So, I got 12/14 for you then? Not a bad result :)

Not entirely sure what game you were watching saved one defo goal in the first half with his cut out of a long ball to m-smith and won all his headers a 5/10 is complete balls of a mark as a grade on your marking there id say Must do better ;-)

I thought the atmosphere was great in Kingsland, too. I think the clue to why you thought otherwise might come in your name, Mr Glass half-empty....

Really enjoyed that, we were in control for the majority of the game.

We started with a tempo and pushed them back at every oppertunity, as soon as they had the ball we harried them and eventually won the ball back and forced errors from them - time and time again, this method lead to our first goal v Barnard which was a brilliant finish.

We played out the rest of the 1st half in control, we had a couple of dodgy moments but i didn''t ever feel too threatened by P'Boro.

We started the 2nd half even quicker than the first, straight out of the blocks from the KO and before P'boro could even touch the ball, we'd made it 2-0 with a great header and one hell of a cross from Dickson. It was 3-0 shortly after when a terrific team move down the right, a terrific ball in by Hammond and a fantastic volley by Chaplow - a real class goal that.

They got their consolation (sloppy bit of play from us) but we wrapped it up straight after with a good header from Guly.

What stood out to me today was how impressive our full backs were, we looked so balanced down either flank and alot of the play was coming through them. Over the past few seasons we've been known to put makeshift right backs and left backs in there, but the real thing makes so much difference.

Chappers was excellent, you're not going to find many better midfielders than him at this level he's terrific. Holmes was also very very good when he came on, showed a good turn on a couple of occasions and got an assist with an excellent cross so he's really pushed himself into the team now.

To all those people doubting Jaidi...he was class today, you do not need to be a quick defender to deal with pace. All you need is intelligence and a positional sense about you and he had that in abundance today, looked like a total rock.

Overall a very good win and you can see why P'boro concede as many as they do, they look a nice footballing team but as soon as they're pressured with a bit of guile and pace then they fall apart. Bring on brighton...

Spot on.

where is saint lard telling us we are under peforming and the players dont play for adkins..?

Oh,i'm here fella.

Do you not think up until today we have seriously under performed, both collectively and on an individual basis?

And with some of the changes made,Puncheon out,Harding out,Morgan out, that some of the players were not performing for Adkins? i include Lambert quite obviously also.

But as fickle as some are i'm sure you like others will think all is rosey as we have just beaten Peterborough.

At last it seems we could combine playing well and getting the result, the key is now consistancy.

Well done Adkins and the boys, keep it up.

Big Game Tuesday, don't throw away any good work done, any improvement, however small is a bonus.

I will however refrain from wetting myself over this long over due display coupled with the result.

6 wins at SMS in a row. All by playing far better football than we did last season. 8 goals in our last 2 home games, 1 conceded. Why the constant negativity?

For those who didn't have their glasses on it was definitely Fonte who let their player through to score and not Jaidi. I agree with those who thought Jaidi is in a different class (from Seaborne) especially in the air and would love to see those who think he is slow have a race with him. They might be surprised. Totally clinical performance. Now for Brighton.

I thought that the Northam was poor in the second half particularly.

Why no singing when we are winning?

Disapointing in the last few mins when everyone started leaving so there werent many left to make noise at the final whistle. First time i've seen fans flock out when you're 4-1 up.

Lol! I left about a minute before the final whistle and said at the time, it's the first time I've left early when we were WINNING 4-1. We just got pi*sed off at everyone else going down the gangways so we couldn't see anything and gave up trying.

Well they are hard to spot apart arent they...identical twins really ;-)

My only concern is for Jaidi playing twice in such a short time against Brighton.

Yeah there was some good banter flying round about people getting home to vote for Wagner. One min is one thing but to leave on 80 mins is a bit different.
