dubai_phil Posted 18 November, 2010 Share Posted 18 November, 2010 Serious question. Why do you live there Phil? Its a ****ing hot desert with little to do and lots of low grade hassle when trying to do the things most westerners want, which is to drink and get laid. People try and generate this image of some cool expat lifestyle, but Ive never seen any evidence the reality matches up. Simple question, many ways to answer. I came here, I'd tried for 34 years to get the hell out of Salisbury and failed every time. This was a chance to be and see something new and I took it with both hands. The one answer I come up with time and again for staying here - This City gives people the chance to have a once in a Lifetime Experience every couple of months. Sure, you have to work hard for it, but I still view my coming here as the day I won the lottery, not financially, but in suddenly realising that life and reality is a hell of a lot more than sitting down to watch News at Ten and being "outraged". (Not a dig at Britness just one of the small things you suddenly notice) In honesty it is that ability to do things I could never have dreamt about in England. Back home I moght have gone to see Tiger (in his heyday) in the rain 20 people back at The Open. Down here I've stood next to him on a fairway in a Pro-Am and he asked me what club he should use, then coming and sitting down with us in the bar and buying the beers. My GF had never been to a Golf Course before and spent the afternoon with Clarke & W******d drinking beer while they explained it all to her. My kids grew up safe away from Bullying, weirdos, drugs and Hoodies. They never ate "ready meals" as that stuff is always far more expensive than fresh ingredients. This place was full of sh1t during the BLING years with every piece of dross the UK could throw at us, but they have all gone now thank fook. The thing is that this place works REALLY well. There ARE rules, but once you know what the rule is you also learn what the ways around the rules are. Andrew Flintoff now lives here - he said in an interview - Down here I'm just Andrew, I'm a Dad on the school run and a bloke in a pub. Nobody wants to "Take Issue" with me. Right now? It is 29C the weather is stunning, the air is fresh and clear and we will have this for 6 months before the arrrgh of summer People say I made Dubai. Or was it the other way around?? . I know that my coming here was THE luckiest thing that could have happened to me. God, we all miss home, friends, football, Dr Who on a Saturday night after the game, TV that you have some semblance of scheduling from, and of course Culuture and History (and hence the Royal Family is an important part of that link to home) Next week I will meet 14 of the top 60 European Golfers and pose for photos with them and I will be on Sky on numerous occassions. The week after I will be at one of the best sports events in the World - The Dubai Rugby 7's, and on Christmas Day we'll have Turkey, all the trimmings and then go down the beach for a swim and a sundowner..... But I STILL miss home!
dune Posted 18 November, 2010 Share Posted 18 November, 2010 The Duke of Edinburgh has expressed regret over a comment he made about Indians during a tour of an electronics firm - but it is not the first time his controversial remarks have landed him in hot water. In May this year he angered deaf people during a visit to the new Welsh Assembly. While he was with a group from the British Deaf Association who were standing near a band, he pointed to the musicians and said: "Deaf? If you are near there, no wonder you are deaf." In 1996 he caused an outcry among gun law reformers when he said: "There's no evidence that people who use weapons for sport are any more dangerous than people who use golf clubs or tennis rackets or cricket bats." He told a Briton he met in Hungary in 1993: "You can't have been here that long - you haven't got a pot belly". In 1995 he asked a Scottish driving instructor: "How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test." The Prince angered local residents in Lockerbie when on a visit to the town in 1993, he said to a man who lived in a road where 11 people had been killed by wreckage from the Pan Am jumbo jet: "People usually say that after a fire it is water damage that is the worst. We are still trying to dry out Windsor Castle." During a Royal visit to China in 1986 he described Peking as "ghastly" and told British students: "If you stay here much longer you'll all be slitty-eyed." He said of Canada: "We don't come here for our health. We can think of other ways of enjoying ourselves." At the height of the recession in 1981 he said: "Everybody was saying we must have more leisure. Now they are complaining they are unemployed." In 1966 he provoked outrage by saying: "British women can't cook." Commenting on stress counselling for servicemen in a TV documentary on the 50th Anniversary of D-Day, he said: "It was part of the fortunes of war. We didn't have counsellors rushing around every time somebody let off a gun, asking `are you all right - are you sure you don't have a ghastly problem?'. You just got on with it." Personal remarks have annoyed singing stars. In 1969 The Duke said to Tom Jones after the Royal Variety Performance: "What do you gargle with, pebbles?". At a private lunch given 30 years ago he said he thought Adam Faith's singing was like bath water going down a plug hole. The Duke is a Legend. Everyone else thought the same thing and the whole road along the front was chocca with cars parked on the double yellows. Unfortunately the ob weren't given the day off and every car got a ticket. buctootim Posted 18 November, 2010 Share Posted 18 November, 2010 (edited) But you can change your life without emigrating, and the image of Britain you paint isnt reality, or at least isnt the only reality available. My kids go to good state schools with none of the problems you describe. I live in the UK and ex presidents of three countries know me by sight and name - go me, the boy from Weston estate. My point isnt to have a ****ing in the air contest with you - its that there are just as many opportunties in the UK without the hassles of the Gulf - or if you want to live in a different culture, society and climate lots of countries like Singapore, Chile, Argentina, Taiwan, Botswana, even the US, seem to offer a lot more imo. The Gulf is literally one of the last places on earth I'd want to live - but as I say Im not knocking your choices, just wondered what informed them . I keep telling you Dune, there is no room for politics in the classroom, especailly in history where it is open to subjectivity. I teach pupils what I'm told to teach them from the government. If I was trying to 'brain wash' them it would be highly un-ethical and would ultimately cost me my career. The fact that I am an anti-fascist does however allow me to make sure that I am in line and follow to the letter current government initiatives such as 'Every Child Matters' which is as it should be as this is part of my job's remit.
