CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 15 November, 2010 Share Posted 15 November, 2010 (edited) In all honesty 'Embarrassment' is just about the perfect word to describe just how I feel about seeing this beloved club of ours down in the 3rd division of English football. When a stranger asks you what team you support - that look of bewilderment (or is it pity ?) that comes over their face when you tell them "Southampton" is like a bleeding wound that will never heal with me. The truth is that this division and all the clubs in it just don't matter to the vast majority of football fans, and before we critise the shallowness of that attitude too much, if we are perfectly honest with ourselves how many of us really gave a toss about the lower leagues when we were back in the EPL ? I know plenty of Saints fans quite enjoy us being in the lower divisions because this means they can see us win more games. All I can say is 'good luck to them' but I for one will never settle for seeing this club reduced to the state of near irrelevance it is in now. You get what you deserve in life they say - the thing is that I've never been able to quite figure out what the average Saints fan has done to deserve the last 5 years of utter sh1t we've all had to endure. But hopefully we will be able to pull ourselves out of here and be able to hold our heads up high again soon. and in that one word you have summed it all up. It all seems a little bit hopeful. Hopeful that the team will click, hopeful that our away form will improve, hopeful that we can string a run of wins together, hopeful that we go up. Given the players we have the crowds we get and the financial backing we have we should hardly lose a game in this league, of course you will fom time to time but we have lost 6 of our first 16 games, more than a third. Over a season that is losing 17 games, which is poor for club which was supposed to win promtion at a canter. 10 place reflects where we deserve to be given our performances so far this season. I think anyone who is embarrassed about our position is an embarrassment to the Club. Real football supporters, as opposed to plastics, really do give a **** about the 3rd division or even the 4th and Conference. As for being in the EPL, it is embarrassing that anyone actually uses that term. I can usually forgive our Colonial cousins (if you are one then howdy), but really the EPL? It is the Premier League, not the English Premier League, or if you want to pander to corporate sponsorship the Barclays Premier League. Never ever is it the EPL. Saints were in the Premier League for what, 13 seasons in our 125 year history. Are you embarrassed about the other 112 years. I'm certainly not. Thanks to the creation of the Premiership it is now really only a handful of clubs even in the top division that count. I have travelled a fair bit around Europe on business, and even when Saints were in the Premiership hardly anyone had ever heard of us - our the city of Southampton for that matter. But at least I don't have to bother about local rivalries, its Coventry that bug me.

Are you kidding? I'd say I'm proud to be a Southampton fan, considering I'm actually from Southampton. I've been living in Somerset for the past two and a half years and EVERYONE supports Liverpool - some 200 miles away from where they were actually born and brought up. Now that's embarrassing. There's nothing more cringe-worthy than walking past a pub here when Liverpool are playing to see it decked out in red shirts. I just don't understand how you can have that much a connection to a club having lived in the city, only watched the team on TV and only been to a handful of games. cambsaint Posted 15 November, 2010 Share Posted 15 November, 2010 The blame is attached to one person alone -The absolute Lowest of the Lowe. His incredibly stupid and egotistical mistakes are too many to list. His insistance on knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing. His managerial instability, and look at the number of old Saints players who weren't even our best still playing in the top flight. The only funny thing is that if he'd kept us up the ruddy faced duck murderer would have made millions! Ther's still hope though -when Adkins gets his own team together we'll go places.
