Window Cleaner Posted 18 November, 2010 Share Posted 18 November, 2010 NA took the job knowing that though, I'm pretty sure he didn't say in his interview that he need to buy a load of players and needed a pre-season if NC wanted promotion this season. In fact I'm sure one of the first things Nigel said when he took the Job was how good our squad was. Also it's not up to the fans to give the manager a fair crack of the whip that's the job of our esteemed chairman. He said he'd inherited the best squad in the division, seems to have been deceived a bit then. Then again one of the first things he did was to ship out one of the only players he'd worked with to a higher league club, not sure where we are with Fish Mills now though. Anyway, I had no different expectations when Adkins came in than I did pre-season....90 points and automatic promotion. We may still get the latter but the former is a bit of a forlorn hope now. PaulGilchrist_76 Posted 18 November, 2010 Share Posted 18 November, 2010 Nigel Adkins was only thought of as a cheap option by some unrealistic fans on here. He is well thought of, and imho, a good appointment. Would have loved Jose but Cortesse wouldn't stretch to that I bet the folks in Carlisle and Huddersfield think he is a wonderful appointment ! PaulGilchrist_76 Posted 18 November, 2010 Share Posted 18 November, 2010 Those living in the real world already know that we've spent more than Blackpool did and they've got to the Premier League. Those living in the real world already know we have spent more than enough money to get out of this division, as all the clubs that have got promoted before us have shown - Leeds didn't spend anything like the money we have to get out of this division. Who on earth is this "top class manager" desperate to come to third tier Southampton that you think we'll get. Pardew was the biggest name we could have possibly got, and Adkins is pretty much around that level too, albeit less proven further up. Yeah, it's me not in the real world.....sheesh. Oh, and "the likes of Rochdale and Carlisle" have top class managers and expensive squads do they, as you seem to think they're so much better than us? I bow to your superior knowledge. Of course we don't need any more players to secure promotion. Of course we didn't struggle against Rochdale, Carlisle et al. Of course NA is the best manager we could possibly expect in our wildest dreams. Of course we are top of the league and everything is great. david in sweden Posted 19 November, 2010 Share Posted 19 November, 2010 I am interested to know what those who thought Nigel Adkins' appointment was a 'masterstroke' think and if they remain steadfast in this opinion still. This is not a NA bashing thread at all,i can assure you. Retires to bunker. well......it sounds a bit like it from here. My answer is YES I'm fairly satisfied considering that he isn't on the pitch himself...and I don't expect him to get us up to the Prem by next May. We had a good second half to last season , but there were still flaws in the system then (AP)...at least NA is doing something about it ..so generally speaking ...yes I'm impressed . Charlie Wayman Posted 19 November, 2010 Share Posted 19 November, 2010 Not played at the Emirates??? Hey! I love it, you have a great memory. Let's be realistic 'though Alan Pardew gave him a team on a plate so he could hardly fail to get good results early on. Now he's tinkering it's all beginning to fall apart and Puncheon's departure as well as being totally unexpected is also a signal that all is not well behind the scenes. ...and what happened to the one-touch pass and move football we were promised? France demonstrated how to do it with style on Wednesday; you probably noticed that there were 3 gooners on one side and 2 on the other by the way ;-)

PaulGilchrist_76 Posted 19 November, 2010 Share Posted 19 November, 2010 how is being in the top couple of the form table falling apart? Exactly, we are really top of the league by 25 points. According to CB Fry, we are going to be just like Blackpool, reaching the premiership without spending a penny! Just by being a bit more organised. He has totally sold me his vision. Can you imagine being just like Blackpool? The Illuminations, the Tower, the Pleasure Beach. After all, we already have the donkeys!

CB Fry Posted 19 November, 2010 Share Posted 19 November, 2010 (edited) I bow to your superior knowledge. Of course we don't need any more players to secure promotion. Of course we didn't struggle against Rochdale, Carlisle et al. Of course NA is the best manager we could possibly expect in our wildest dreams. Of course we are top of the league and everything is great. You've got some serious issues. I said none of those things. What I did say is we have spent more than enough to get out of this division, and whinging like a sl ag for Cortese to "loosen the purse strings" when we've already financially blown every other club in the division out of the water is a little bit childish and shows no grasp of the real world whatsoever. And I didn't say we didn't struggle against Carlisle, just wondered why Carlisle don't need a world class manager and a multi million pound squad to beat us, but we need an even more expensive manager and even more million pound players to beat them? And yes, Nigel Adkins, a well thought of manager from the league above probably is as good as we're going to get. If not him, who else. I'll tell you who else, someone at about the same level/experience as Pardew or Adkins. That's our level you div. And, I said nothing of the sort. Keep taking the medicine. Especially as we haven't "not spent a penny", we've spent a bloody fortune. We've already spent more than Blackpool ever did, in this division or above. Just let me know how many millions of pounds we have to spend before we can possibly dream of beating Mega Spending Mega Club Carlisle? Oh yes, you've totally sold me your vision. We must spend at least £300m players on £150,000 a week wages before we can even think about finishing sixth in league one. Welcome to the land of the complete fu ck wi t. Thus far to me we play about the same, are achieving about the same results and have not yet stamped the authority we should on this league given that the squad has now been together for 12 months, is the most expensively assembled in the league and is supported by resources all the other members of the league can only dream of... If you're still in that bunker? I'd keep your head down until the smoke clears and keep your helmet on . Well, you are wide of the mark. I was simply enquiring of those who seemed to be stating as fact that Adkins was going to succeed, he was the best young manager out there and we were lucky to get him, again posted as fact by many. Are they still of this mindset, although i'm sure those that are will fervantly deny any such claims were made. I'm sure i have made it obvious of my stance,so therefore i will not keep my head down. Even with victories over the next two opponents will not change my view, his appointment is flawed in the longterm. And i strongly feel that divisions, unrest and the lack of progress by our squad, which in my view is being highlighted by the very poor displays and performances by some of our players, will continue. If you look at various ongoing threads at present the momentum is growing that some players should be shipped out,the same players that were performing well last season, something has changed, and not for the better. What appears to be going to happen now is that there will be a clear out and he will be bringing in his own players to play his style, well i hope for his sake that is the correct way forward, good players do not become bad overnight,it is now approaching the busy xmas period and a time to strengthen not a time to try and change a squad to adapt to your particular playing style otherwise it will be more time wasted. Prerhaps he should be utilising the players and playing them to their strengths, which served us pretty damn well last season,we were dominating sides regularly and we seemed to go into games with a very strong belief we would not be beaten, and invariably we were not beaten. The side at present do not look capable of the fluid free flowing football that was advocated by Adkins and those that championed his cause. He is going to tinker until he gets it his way which will mean wholesale changes, shame really i thought we had a side more than capable of taking us forward, the clock is ticking,so come January perhaps the 'new side' will take time to gel oncemore. He will not strenghthen, just simply shuffle the pack to suit his style, which in the longterm will prove us to be weaker. Christ our side is full of quality players for this league and we are underperforming thus far, something is wrong and it is not just the players. I sincerely hope i'm wrong and he succeeds,if so i will eat copious amounts of humble pie if so,but truthfully any half decent manager should have us playing so much better. He will of failed miserably if we are still in this league next season,he is in a lose lose situation,if he gets us up that was the minimum requirement, doing it playing well is another matter. Come on Adkins, give me cause for optimism please. Plus,i need the points in the prediction league. I could not give a toss who does not agree,it is a forum for opinioins. The Kraken Posted 20 November, 2010 Share Posted 20 November, 2010 Even with victories over the next two opponents will not change my view, his appointment is flawed in the longterm. Disagree; I think the next two games in particular are the perfect judge of where we are under Adkins; if we come out of them with 6 points then it's a real hats off to Adkins. A win and a draw, that's my minimum expectation and I'd honestly be a little disappointed, anything less than that is unacceptable IMO. Any manager can only be judged properly when he has had a fair amount of time to mould his team, and also the chance to correct any deficiencies he sees in the squad. Being as all summer there was a clamour for at least 3 new players (new CM, replacement for Antonio/Waigo, new CF) and we've only seen Chaplow come in and Oxo step up from the ranks, I think it's only right that Adkins be given license by NC to bring in players in January, and I fully expect this to happen. The departure of Puncheon further indicates that Adkins will be allowed to tailor his team to his requirements rather than be completely hamstrung by previous signings. Come on Adkins, give me cause for optimism please. Disagree with a lot of that. I'll agree that we still often look under par, but I have seen very many signs that we are a team in transition, and our playing style is changing and improving all the time. Where we have fallen down is that we haven't been able to put in winning performances against the top sides (apart from Bompey who are up there). I've said all along that these two games will define where we are under Adkins, and I'm confident of winning both.
patred44 Posted 20 November, 2010 Share Posted 20 November, 2010 (edited) When he came here I was open minded, but hopeful. Results have been fairly good, but nonetheless no more than what was expected with the strength of our squad. Our only two 'toughies' away from home Huddersfield and Carlisle were lost before we kicked a ball IMO. Particulary the Carlisle game, where we very negative, in approach and selection. Adkins will be judged by Cortese's willingness to back him in January. To get that we need to be in the race for promotion. Are the players any happier under Adkins? Some signs that some are. Recent leaks from inside the club suggests that there is still a lot of problems at the training ground. Has he got the best out of our players? Not yet he hasn't. He certainly hasn't got the best out of Lambert, nor did he Puncheon. Oxo, and Lallana are playing well under him. Fonte has been inconsistent, and the whole defence has looked a bit shaky in the last few games. This will continue until Fonte gets a partner he is happy with. The promising Martin hasn't had a look in, for some reason. The zonal marking at corners he introduced, has been a disaster IMO. Another struggling to play their best is Schnderlin. Barnards future at the club is still uncertain, apart from his misconduct out of hours, he is still not utilized to his full potential. He is first to be dropped, first to be subbed. That doesn't help with his confidence. Tactically, Adkins has proved to be a lot more cautious than Pardew. He communicates well with the fans, and I believe he relates to them more than the previous manager. Overall, he is OK, but could do better I'd give him a mean 6 out of 10, mindful that the two biggest games are to be played today, and midweek. Two good results.. could raise my hopes;) and his marks ! Edited 20 November, 2010 by patred44

Two good results.. could raise my hopes;) and his marks !I was and still am encouraged by Adkins appointment A new Manager coming it will have new ideas and that takes time. As you say, results have been OK in general. Any better or worse under Pardew, we will never know. My view is a similar outcome at this stage. Huddersfield and Carlisle were tough. In the former we, and I include Adkins, were naive. We had just previously completed a flowing game at home and thought we had arrived and that was the only style. A lesson we will learn well from. In the latter there was no problem with the formation or tactics. It was poor individual errors. Not the first time and changes in today’s team will likely reflect that. We got forward well, had more shots and possession and scored two goals, hardly negative. However, I was not at those away games so am basing my opinion on second hand reports. Adkins will be judged on whether he can get us promotion from this and the Championship, not on what money Cortese and the Liehberr family release. Whenever a new Manager arrives there are always some that are disturbed out of their comfort zone and may resent it. Good players can play under any Manager. Leaks from the training ground? What are they other than leftbacks revelations. I am not hearing any negative reports from my contacts but maybe they are not saying anything as it should be kept in house (or, in the words of Adkins, in the building) Is he getting the best out of our players. He is still assessing but I see no worse than Pardew. He has indicated on SaintsPlayer that Lambert has only just returned to full fitness. He has kept faith with him so far. Not sure Puncheon responded under Pardew either, other than the initial few weeks he signed. Fonte has occasionally struggled a bit this season but that was evident from the start, not since Adkins arrived. I agree he needs a steady reliable centre back he is happy with. Not sure what the story is with Martin. Initially injury. Perhaps he thinks he needs to ease him in. Seaborne is injured it leftback is correct. He seems to be first choice to accompany Fonte and I think he has a great future with us. Jaidi has the experience, reads the game well and a secure in the air. Age is slowing him down and if, as I suspect, he plays today he will be troubled by a speedy forward. I agree that zonal marking at corners is clearly is not working, but is that because our players are not doing what they are told in training? Worth a look today to see what happens. Shcneiderlin struggled last season as well. I put it down to the lack of width preventing him from releasing the ball but he is too much in his own comfort zone. Our movement off the ball is almost non existent. Perhaps that is the reason! Barnard has put his own future in doubt by his off the field activities. I do not see Adkins using him any different that Pardew! Do not agree Adkins is more cautious. He have widened our game, the team is beginning to defend further up field and the reason the goals are not flowing as much a slast year is an out of form/injured leading scorer and a lack of the same pace of last season. He inherited that from Pardew. As you say, a better communicator. Do not disagree with 6 out of 10 at present or your comments on the two big games this week. .comsaint Posted 20 November, 2010 Share Posted 20 November, 2010 I think Adkins has done a good job so far & gets my vote to carry on as he is. And that has got nothing to do with today's 4-1 win over The Posh. I think last week NA messed up with a very negative formation at Carlisle . . . and he knows it if he's honest with himself. We are a 4-4-2 side without any doubt. We have the firepower within the squad to win games - even if we concede a goal or two. Attack is indeed the best form of defence. Our current form is good but we must keep it going (or improve even). Adkins has only been here 10 minutes & as someone else said above; it will take time to get his ideas & playing style over to each & everyone in the squad. And (of course) we all hope that where we're lacking on the field, Mr Cortese will finance an addition or two come January. But yeah - as of tonight - I am pretty pleased indeed with Nigel Adkins thus far - and long may he continue. It's still only mid-November & a long way to go yet until May's finishing line. A win over the Seagulls on tuesday will only increase my admiration for Mr Adkins still further!

NickG Posted 20 November, 2010 Share Posted 20 November, 2010 IF we beat Brighton. We will have been the best performing team in this league from the day Adkins took over.

NickG Posted 21 November, 2010 Share Posted 21 November, 2010 Hey! France demonstrated how to do it with style on Wednesday; you probably noticed that there were 3 gooners on one side and 2 on the other by the way ;-) top of home current form 2nd in total current form gained 6 points on Brighton and Bournemouth in last 6 games I hope this poor cheaply appointed manager continues to have a team falling apart! NickG Posted 21 November, 2010 Share Posted 21 November, 2010 current form over last 8, (and sorry just don't get Lard's and Charlies view on team falling apart and underperforming) Played 8, won 6, drawn 0, lost 2, F19, A 8, points 18, point per game 2.25 Best in the league. http://stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/D2/oform.html Continue for the rest of the seaon and we will have over 92 points - plenty to go up. We have not had a forward hit form yet, have a bigger squad than most as injuries and bookings become a factor, and apparnetly money to spend. Why would you not be optimistic that Adkins is going to take us up?

"Do you not think up until today we have seriously under performed, both collectively and on an individual basis? And with some of the changes made,Puncheon out,Harding out,Morgan out, that some of the players were not performing for Adkins? i include Lambert quite obviously also. But as fickle as some are i'm sure you like others will think all is rosey as we have just beaten Peterborough. At last it seems we could combine playing well and getting the result, the key is now consistancy. Well done Adkins and the boys, keep it up. Big Game Tuesday, don't throw away any good work done, any improvement, however small is a bonus. I will however refrain from wetting myself over this long over due display coupled with the result." He has been a very good manager for us -so far. Season is far from over but looks - as it has from day 1 - a good appointment. I reserve to the right review my judgement if he ****s it up! saint lard Posted 21 November, 2010 Author Share Posted 21 November, 2010 All i'm asking for is good performances from a talented, expensively formed,(for this league) and according to some, be it delivered by our 'we are lucky too have' manager. Faz Posted 21 November, 2010 Share Posted 21 November, 2010 But it's not just about this season either is it? Yes promotion is the priority, but building a squad, and style/pattern which will see us succeed next year is also important. We don't want to have to start again next year, whichever division we're in. Whatever the result on Tuesday, it won't define our season. It's overall consistency that counts. I fully expect us to go on simillar runs to the last 8 games, peppered by the odd defeat there and there.
NickG Posted 21 November, 2010 Share Posted 21 November, 2010 no team in prem, league 1 or league 2 can match our return over recent form - derby can match it. If that is your basis for being "underwhelmed" and "more than disappointed" in him, I can guarantee you would have been let down by any manager we have and always will be. St Marco Posted 11 December, 2010 Share Posted 11 December, 2010 I said it before and i will say it again. We haven't improved under him "yet". Our wins of late have been against poor teams and we have had a lot of luck. When we come up against teams who want to play we don't do so well, Brighton,Carlisle, Huddersfield and now Brentford. You can talk about home runs or winning stats but the real number that is important is we have now got 4 points from the last 12. That is not promotion level. What he does now will define our season in my opinion. Lambert is out of form and the fact we rely so much on him is screwing us. It is like what happened with Rasiak and John. We can't seem to play another way and in that regards it is like Burley is in charge again. When teams come and want to play, chase the ball down and put in the energy we become un-stuck, we lack ideas and get frustrated. Today a lot of players made mistakes so you can't place all the blame at Adkins but he had no plan B just like Burley. His subs were wrong and changed it so late it was pointless, again like Burley. So far i don't think he comes across like a man manager, watching him on the line he doesn't seem to do much, a few shouts here and there, again very much like Burley. The team we have is good enough to get promoted. It should get promoted. Right now things have to improve.
