David Strover Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 I agree with this comment. The same fans often moan that we are a 'laughing stock' because we've had so many managers etc....
Saint Stimp Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 I think the majority of people (myself included) think that yesterday was the first time Adkins has gone wrong. If he learns from his mistakes there wont be a problem.
The9 Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 A cynic would point to defeat at Carlisle compared to a 4-1 cakewalk at Wembley and defeat at Huddersfield compared to a 5-0 win at St Mary's under Pardew. But generally I agree with you. People are far too ready to criticise, we're going to lose some games here and there but overall should have more than enough for this division. Save the criticism for a time when we're not in a strong position to challenge for promotion - the margins in this league are usually defined by effort, and both the teams I mentioned above had the additional motivation of their last result against us. No doubt someone will be starting a thread about Pardew's success damaging Adkins' chances now...

There will always be a knee jerk reaction after a game either getting too carried away if we win and too despondant if we lose. We all know the time to judge any manager is perhaps after 18 months. Personally I am glad we have him managing our club.

And what is the difference between these performances ??? it comes down to the same 2 men all of the time, Antonio and Lambert. One's no longer here the other is just a cardboard cut out of the real thing.
Rory Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 Nigel is doing all he can with the players he inherited from Pardew. They're really good players but clearly not performing. Lambert has looked poor since the very first game of the season, and this definitely isn't Adkins' fault. I'm pretty certain Adkins would have a higher win ratio if Lambert was the player Pardew had last year.
The Kraken Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 Adkins harshest critic is going to be Cortese; if we fail at promotion this year then its touch and go whether he'll keep his job. And we obviously have not set the world alight away from home, which is an issue that needs to be addressed. The next two home games will also tell us an awful lot about this team. And I fully expect Adkins to be given funding for 2, maybe 3 players in the transfer window to really start turning this into his team.

Although I don't think the answer is new players all of the time. That's probably what got us into this awful shambles of a division in the first place.NA has to decide what his first team is and play it.To me the team that he has been playing of late isn't the right one and yesterday he seemed to realise that and tinkered with it but in a sort of half hearted way.Until he makes the obvious change that he seems reluctant to make (or is he even allowed to!) we are going to have problems. Lambert is absolutely dire and it's plain for everybody to see,yet it's Barney that gets dropped,Guly must be wondering wtf he is doing here, he sees the abject Lambert getting 90 minutes every week and he doesn't even get 5 minutes. The players must be thinking wtf is going on.

Toomer Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 I see some people are looking for the revolving door fitters again already.
dubai_phil Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 Not that I can be @rsed to trawl through some of the build up threads, but it would be an interesting nerdy exercise to see how many of the outspoken critics after the game were the same ones demanding a change in tactics or an experiment with differing formations. There is a simple reality here. In our last two away games we have started VERY slowly, lost one and had a roaring comeback in the other. The ONLY way I would have an issue with NA is if he had NOT tried something different yesterday, as CLEARLY in the previous two games there was something not right. You cannot blame the manager if players make stupid mistakes, after all HE CANNOT BUY ANYONE until January so has to use what he was left with. Maybe they are good players technically who are simply THICK when it comes to the task of marking players. He tried something different, it didn't work. No need to slit wrists, just wait and see what happens next away game. Oh and FWIW I REALLY do not think it is entirely intelligent for an ITK'er to come onto this forum and announce our tactics and team selection to the opposition 24 hours before a game. yeah sure axe to grind and all that but it harms the build up and any element of tactical surprise, so do us a favour and STFU

The problem with that is that I just don't see Guly as a natural replacement for Lambert; I think he's a completely different type of player than that, and one you perhaps have to fit your team around. And Adkins doesn't seem to want to do that. As (IMO) he's not a replacement for Lambert, we simply don't have anyone else who can come in and do a better job in that role. I didn't go yesterday but have been to all the last few home games and have seen a gradual improvement from RL. Not to the extent that he's the player he was last season, he clearly isn't, but I truly believe that an off form Lambert in that role offers us more than any other player we currently have. I don't know what the solution is; clearly Lambert is enough of a potential that we have to give him time, but while he's still well off being the player he was last year, when we fail to win games some tough questions are going to be asked.
Legod Third Coming Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 I'm not sure if Lambert is off colour or we simply play a system that does not suit him. Rickie thrives on a long-ball game because he controls the ball so well and holds it up for other players. He played best in a 4-5-1 when he was given great support. I didn't go yesterday so can't really comment but having seen us at home this season, he will not be suited to the short, sharp interplay stuff because he has no natural pace - it's not what his game is about.
dune Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 There was always going to be few that would seize upon the first opportunity to slate NA. Personally I think he got it wrong by playing 1 up front, but that's just my opinion and I remain 100% behind him.

I'm not sure if I agree with that actually; I think Lambert is starting to create a really good partnership with Barnard. And I think Lambert definitely has a role in the team, he's still played as the fulcrum of the team and brings team mates into play with his general hold-up and link up play. In fact, the area of his game I've noticed he is perhaps most off colour on is his aerial dominance, last year he seemed to win absolutely everything, this year it's sometimes looked like he's struggled to get off the ground. I think he'll come good, and I also think he offers us a lot despite not being on top form. I do think he's suffered from not being fit at the start of the season, and is also having a mini crisis of confidence. A couple of goals from open play would do him the world of good.
WATERSIDEIFASAINT Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 I am happy with NA despite yesterdays result.I think it is the players who are on trial and if they don't perform they will be replaced in January imo.I get the feeling we will be active in January if we need to be and we can be absolutely certain there will be changes upfront. Lambert is the big problem this season and if he had shown half the form of last season we would currently probably be sitting top with the amount of chances we have had in most games despite not playing that well. I will be interested to see if we try and bring another striker in on loan before the loan window closes to make sure we are still in the mix come January or will NA have the guts to drop Lambert and play Guly and Barnard next Saturday? It might just give Lambert the kick up the backside he needs and will at least take him out of the firing line for a game or two.

benjii Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 Lambert's not been as lethal in front of goal and his hold-up play hasn't been as good as last year but it's not right to suggest he's suddenly awful. If you look at our first goal last weekend, who was it who saw the potential of Harding's run and quickly dropped off his defender to play the one-two? (it was Lambert).
Badger Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 Some people clearly have not got over the disappointment that we failed to appoint Phil Brown or Paul Hart.

Badger Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 Or MON. But realistically who were we more likely to end up with MON,or the likes of Brown,or Hart ? Lets not forget MON was not universally popular at Villa in the dressing room if media and forums are to be believed.
georgeweahscousin Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 I despair at how reactionary some Saints fans are at times. Is it any wonder that we go through managers so rapidly.........
ottery st mary Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 (edited) In all honesty the vast majority of Saints fans want Our Nigel to achieve at this club.. I for one want him to get two home wins and go on to have a very fruitful run of games in December. Like many I was frustrated with the Pards saga but am now fully behind Na AND THE TEAM.. We all know that terrible feeling after a loss..hangs around for a day or two until the build up til the next game.. I will not debate whether NA is the right choice whether he is better than Pards or George Burley.. He was chosen by NC and is our boss now and he will strive hard to get this team moving in the right direction. Come on Nigel earn your pounds now and get us back up there amongst the promotion candidates. Two wins coming up... Come on you Saints...... Rikkkeee sort it out. View From The Top Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 The only people with an anti Adkins agendas are class 1 c**ts. Thankfully they really attend games, which is true of the majority of the whinging moaning c**ts on here. End of.
aintforever Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 Anyone who thinks Adkins should be sacked is an idiot. Anyone who thinks our fan base is to blame for our demise is an even bigger idiot.
corsacar saint Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 I have no problem whatsoever with NA,I like the man. The problem I have with yesterdays result is scoring 2 goals away from home, and losing the match, simply not acceptable.
ericb Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 The NA reaction thread is a joke. Supporting Saints was a much more sane experience before the wonders of the internet. That's exactly the answer, the majority of people on here don't really represent Saints fans in general, it's a weird little microcosm of geek's; obsessives; conspiracy theorists. The extremes are fortified to the point where common sense no longer exists - if we win we're the best in every league, if we lose we're about to collapse from existence for ever - then add to that there's camps of "identity" formed which exacerbate these extremes. In all honesty i tend to think the truest representation of football fans on here are those on a wind up, since they're carrying on the terrace tradition of taking the mick (and being pretty funny in the process). In general i'd suggest ignoring 95% of what's on here or taking it with a massive pinch of salt. From the instant reaction to managers, to the barracking of the echo none of it reasoned and most of it ********. Also the few "regular" posters i've had the pleasure to meet have struck me as geeks of highest order, that need a little more to their life than analysing the stats of a third division football team (i'm sure they're nice people but **** me they're dull). Anyway i'm back to lurking now and laughing at the pompous crap that's posted on here.

You are stirring the **** Whatever happens results wise we can't even think about replacing him until this season is over - he has got to be given time. Yesterday sounds like he made his first big mistake tactics wise - let's hope he learns from it.
dune Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 You are stirring the ****. So what are you doing? He seems to be tinkering too much perhaps (sounds like that was the case yesterday) - perhaps NC is putting on the pressure and he is getting jumpy? What is you agenda against NC all about?
hypochondriac Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 No way do I want him out, I just haven't been too impressed with our performances under him as of yet. We don't look like automatic promotion candidates.

Faz Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 Does anyone think we wouldn't have played 4-5-1 for this game under Pardew? It wasn't the tactics by the sounds of it, but the execution.

gjphilsaint Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 The anti NA posters are as relevant and as predictable as the so called "popular press". A complete waste of time. I am glad to say that the "get Adkins out" fraternity certainly DO NOT reflect or represent my views, opinions or wishes for the club. This club is being turned around by the new manager and he hasnt had the luxury of dipping into the transfer market either...... the maths of our current table position, is not a worry.
corky morris Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 I certainly support him, but yesterday he got it wrong. I am sure he will again. The purpose of a forum is to share views, that is exactly what people are doing for christ sake.

Saint 76er Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 Surely Cortese would not be spooked by one narrow loss in a difficult away game, and surely NA is here until at least promotion this season is out of reach? However, might be interesting should Ray Wilkins happen to end up here in any capacity. That would certainly keep the pressure on Nige ....
NickG Posted 14 November, 2010 Posted 14 November, 2010 my response to other thread applies before Adkins L 0-1 W 2-0 D 1-1 L 0-1 W 4-0 L 0-3 L 0-2 L 0-1 since L 0-2 (in post for about a day!) d 0-0 w 1-0 d 1-1 w 2-0 w 2-0 l 0-2 w 2-1 w 3-1 w 4-0 w 2-0 Since he has been here only Brighton have done better.
