Colinjb Posted 10 November, 2010 Posted 10 November, 2010 Big Crunch. Gravity will not just dissappear, and there will come a time when the force outward will not exceed the pull inwards.
benjii Posted 10 November, 2010 Author Posted 10 November, 2010 Before December 10th? I have a quality weekend planned.
Lighthouse Posted 10 November, 2010 Posted 10 November, 2010 Big crunch definitely. Gravity has near infinite range and will eventually drag the whole lot big to where it all started. All human endeavour is, ultimately futile so if you want you might as well post tubgirl, it makes no difference in the end.
benjii Posted 10 November, 2010 Author Posted 10 November, 2010 Tubgirl is a reaonable approximation to a unified theory, when you really think about it. And if you look hard enough you can see her Higg's.
Saintandy666 Posted 10 November, 2010 Posted 10 November, 2010 Infinite expansion. I wish I could explain why, but it's in a book somewhere that I read with a lot of evidence. Basically, it all ends up with only a few photons left in the entire universe My own theory which is totally unbacked up by anything is that the universe continuously refreshes itself. Black holes munch up matter and spew it out elsewhere.
Lighthouse Posted 10 November, 2010 Posted 10 November, 2010 My own theory which is totally unbacked up by anything is that the universe continuously refreshes itself. Black holes munch up matter and spew it out elsewhere. So it's kind of like Windows 98?
andysstuff Posted 10 November, 2010 Posted 10 November, 2010 Infinite expansion - universe expansion speed is increasing and gravity can't keep up. Doesn't matter really as it's too long away to worry about. I'd be more interested to know if intelligent life was likely to be found elsewhere within my lifetime.
Saintandy666 Posted 10 November, 2010 Posted 10 November, 2010 So it's kind of like Windows 98? I don't get this one, maybe it's because I'm a bit dumb on windows or that windows 98 was a bit before my time!

andysstuff Posted 10 November, 2010 Posted 10 November, 2010 44 - I'd hope to get that amount in again. It's a reasonable timetable.
benjii Posted 10 November, 2010 Author Posted 10 November, 2010 44 - I'd hope to get that amount in again. It's a reasonable timetable. Most of the experts seem to think we'll find proof of alien life in about 55-70 years. On the bright side, the aliens might be right little tits.

Lighthouse Posted 10 November, 2010 Posted 10 November, 2010 I don't get this one, maybe it's because I'm a bit dumb on windows or that windows 98 was a bit before my time! Nothing to get, it's just a naff joke about Windows 98 being a bit crap.
Saintandy666 Posted 10 November, 2010 Posted 10 November, 2010 Nothing to get, it's just a naff joke about Windows 98 being a bit crap. Ah right. I was trying to analyse it too much trying to fit black holes and photons into windows 98!
Whitey Grandad Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 Steady state. Mathematically it's the same as continual expansion but the light slows down over long distances so from our viewpoint you can't tell the difference.

angelman Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 Silly question - what is on the other side of the universe and what does the universe fit inside of?
Jimmy_D Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 Infinite expansion as the rate that galaxies are going away from each other is speeding up somehow. Eventually all matter will split apart from itself into a huge (think all matter in the universe) uniform sub sub sub atomic plasma ball Zoom out from that plasma ball a near infinite amount and you have a superparticle in an infinite universe, which will explode into a big bang and create a new universe.
Whitey Grandad Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 Silly question - what is on the other side of the universe and what does the universe fit inside of? The universe is everything that we can observe or experience, so if we can imagine anything outside of it that also becomes part of our universe.
trousers Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 a) Steady State b) Infinite Expansion c) Big Crunch Please give your answer with reasons. Ta. Depends which of the infinite number of universes you are referring to.
Ken Tone Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 a) Steady State b) Infinite Expansion c) Big Crunch Please give your answer with reasons. Ta. Finite expansion ...because we will experience the heat death of the universe before it stops expanding. Namely (brief version) energy is conserved overall -whenever change from one sort of energy to another, some becomes heat energy ..eventually all is heat.

Namely (brief version) energy is conserved overall -whenever change from one sort of energy to another, some becomes heat energy ..eventually all is heat. We knew this as the Clausius Inequality, or the second law of thermodynamics. The first law says you can't win. The second law says you can't break even. The third law says you can't stay out of the game. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clausius_theorem
scotty Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 Silly question - what is on the other side of the universe and what does the universe fit inside of? not a silly question at all, if the universe is expanding, surely it must be expanding into something.
Whitey Grandad Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 not a silly question at all, if the universe is expanding, surely it must be expanding into something. Not if there was nothing there to start with.

scotty Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 Not if there was nothing there to start with. therein lies the conundrum. How can you create something out of nothing?
mcjwills Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 therein lies the conundrum. How can you create something out of nothing? Welcome to life at Krap Nottarf
scotty Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 Welcome to life at Krap Nottarf surely thats the chaos theory?
Whitey Grandad Posted 11 November, 2010 Posted 11 November, 2010 therein lies the conundrum. How can you create something out of nothing? I refer you to the third verse of the Book of Genesis. Not that I am religious or anything, but God did like a big bang once in a while.

dune Posted 28 November, 2010 Posted 28 November, 2010 When I first started smoking draw i'm sure I had the answer to this, but since then I smoked that much i've forgotten what it was.
scotty Posted 28 November, 2010 Posted 28 November, 2010 Umm... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11837869 wasnt there something along these lines about the ripple effect? something to do with concentric circles in water but on a cosmic scale?
Whitey Grandad Posted 28 November, 2010 Posted 28 November, 2010 I remember some research that showed that the galaxies were not evenly spread out in the universe but were arranged in 'walls'?
Whitey Grandad Posted 28 November, 2010 Posted 28 November, 2010 And to get you thinking... http://hubblesite.org/gallery/album/entire/pr2004007a/large_web/ Try and count the galaxies first, then the stars.

Apparently we're being dragged towards it at 14 million mph

Apparently we're being dragged towards it at 14 million mph Interesting indeed. Perhaps that explains my increase in mass in recent years? Or maybe my gravitational mass is attracting everything towards me at cosmic speeds? My mind is boggling.

Smirking_Saint Posted 28 November, 2010 Posted 28 November, 2010 I believe our universe is just a marble in a large game of marbles being played by big blue aliens.
Whitey Grandad Posted 28 November, 2010 Posted 28 November, 2010 maybe that where your hair colouring went mate, left behind in the wasteland of space.... It could be. I'm looking forward to the day when I can get a coloured rinse. Do you think I should have blue or a pink one?
