Seeing the great thread by GWC got me thinking - I'm sure someone will do the 125 reasons to hate being a Saints fan one day - but thought I'd see what the "If Only moments" were.

What silly snippet or big moment did you miss for what in hindsight are all the wrong reasons.

For me -

1) The Palarce Semi-Final of '76 - had to go on a Geography Field Trip to North Wales as part of our A-level...... If only I'd told the teacher to sod it.

2) If only I hadn't been holding a cup of coffee when I heard about Keegan signing - took weeks to get the stain out the carpet so we could get our Student Digs deposit back

Any other regrets?

Being stuck in Basrah air station for the Sheff Utd game. With only the sky updates.

When Stern John scored what turned out to be the winner running around like a **** in the ops room shouting and crying while bemused yanks looked on. They thought there had been a serious incident out on the ground.

Being on a business trip in Damascus. Driving across the City to The Sheraton to find the English Pub shut. Getting the Bar staff to change the tv's in reception to show the Saints v Man Ure Cup game so the whole place knew I was a Saints fan.

And getting walloped 4-1 at home

I really think this one was as defining moment it Saints downturn as anything else (Including administration) .

If only Crouch had run the ball into the corner against Middlesborough.

Posted (edited)

and before anyone else mentions it ................................ if only Steve Williams was match fit and that ***t Adrian Heath had missed arrrggggggggh!

(and the old man had taken me to the match in 76)

...Niemi had scored at Loftus Road

... Keegan's overhead kick had been onside

... Pahars hadn't got injured in '03 (Cup win and CL spot anyone?)

Today, technically it would have been....!!!

If only we had re-appointed Glenn Hoddle in 2004 instead of Wurzel !

If only Lowe had ignored the vocal minority that put their own selfish and vindictive agenda before the good of the club.

Then we would probably still be a Premier team now.

If only the football League when forming the Second Division had the balls to invite Southampton to join, we would now be a club of Arsenal size a success.

If only I wasn't chasing a bird I would have watched Tim flowers go loppy when we beat Man U on penalties.

Direct quote from Glen Hoddle.

The chairman wanted me to come back and I wanted to come back, but I needed 100% backing of the board and there were a couple of Directors, who weren't in favour, so i just felt i couldn't do it and explained that to the Chairman.

As for probably being a prem team now, Hoddle, failed in every job after Saints, but you know that anyway, but if it keeps you off the streets, then keep on posting about twaddle.

Of coarse we would. If Hoddle hadn't rejected Saint's for spuds he would now be the most bestest manager.

Yep, and jumping up & down like a loon when we finally managed to get the radio working at the right time to hear the immortal words.....

And now over to (was it?) Stamford Bridge, where Southampton have gone further ahead.

Did a remembrance trip up to the top about 5 years ago. It's still a fecking long walk

1/ Missing out on The ZDS Cup by 48 hours because i couldn't change my leave request and get back in time.

2/ Missing out on 2003 Cup final ... couldn't get leave (or probably a ticket either tbh!!)

3/ Having to watch JPT from a bar in france. This time I had leave booked, but when I booked the skiing hols back in Sept The JPT Final Date wasn't high on my agenda!!

4/ Not having 19C's ability to realise that Lawrie Mac and MLT are actually a pair of blood sucking leeches, rather than 2 of the top 5 all time ever most important Saints EVER. ;)

5/ Subscribing to Saints Player. (or should that be HAVING to subscribe to saints Player as it is the ONLY option available to us expats.)

If only my father had not given in and taken me to The Dell all those years ago. I am sure I would have

become a much more balanced person than I am now. Heck I might have been nearly normal instead of flitting between

being "over the moon " or "wrist slittingly depressed " all of course depending upon how Saints did.

If only Ekelund hadn't got injured and signed permanently.

If only we hadn't got relegated from the Premiership and kept our promising youngsters like Walcott, Bale, Baird and Crainie.

We could have got a chairman that swapped his ambition for being super friendly to the media :(

If only we had a chairmen who understood what it takes to realise the clubs ambitions, (rather than his) and picked his fights accordingly.

(Sorry, but he started it)

You have supported my argument in that the reason those Directors got cold feet about Hoddle was because of the protests by the misguided and vocal few.

I don't understand this.

Nor really picked his fights accordingly.

In fact, what are you on about ?

If only that rosy-cheeked bastard had put us into administration a few days earlier.

Hmmm you still miss a piece of the jigsaw my friend

Perhaps more to the point, If Only Lehmans had never been born, The Rosy one would never had had the place in history he now holds

It's late I've had a weird day so my real If Only for today is...

If Only we could go through ONE home game without some **** nearby MOANING about a player on our team while we are winning
