ericofarabia Posted 7 November, 2010 Author Posted 7 November, 2010 For us a pretty poor showing. Not helped by a relatively small following for a game that some on here were dubbing Shrewsbury's Cup Final. Maybe they objected to paying so little cash for admission or maybe they found an away draw to a L1 team on the fringes of the playoffs an offer they could refuse!!! BUT, have a look at the rest of the Round 1 crowds and we are the only side to crack the 10000 barrier and were over 3000 more than the next biggest gates. "Local Derbies" at Gillingham v Dover (next highest just under 7500) and Plymouth v Swindon suprisingly less than half our gate, puts it all into perspective how popular this stage of the cup really is I guess. Those other massive south coast clubs Brighton and Bomo could barely beat our crowd with their combined total.

I think that bascially sums it up: we are the biggest in what is a poorly-supported event. Heard some *** on 606 going on about "how crap Saints were with big stadium nearly empty" and the bigging up Shrewsbury as tha "next big club to break through" with their "new 10,000 capacity stadium". Yet how many did they bring? 1500? Spare me days, eh?

georgeweahscousin Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 The crowd was nothing to worry about. Following football is an expensive hobby and it wasn't an attractive game.

Wes Tender Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 "Bearing in mind the opposition and the number of other significant home matches during November, the Club had wished to push through discounted rates for this match, in order to reward our most loyal fans." So Shrewsbury couldn't be bothered to bring more than a paltry 727, despite our best efforts to get their fans a really attractive price and our own fans couldn't really be that bothered to go and watch us play a fourth division team either. Rather tends to justify the statement made on the OS, doesn't it?

chocco boxo Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 I think that was a good crowd considering several factors. a) we are not going to win it b) we will have had 5 home games in 5 weeks come Dec 11th. c) Many of the missing fans are season ticket holders d) Bonfire night weekend, some may choose to put their money into that this weekend? e) Who the **** are Shrewsbury ;-)

MarkSFC Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 Not fussed thatvthe crowd was "only" 10,000 ish, especially as it was the largest of the day. It hasn't effected the result, and in these tough financial times isn't it better that people save their money for the next two home games which ate far more important!! Hopefully 24-25k+ at both!!

paulwantsapint Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 Maybe if shrewsbury hadn't wanted such expensive tickets a few more thousand would have turned up saints wanted £10 shrews wanted £20+

Agreed - the empty seats never look great, but when you compare with others in a similar situation, the crowd wasn't too bad at all. Didn't look like Shrewsbury had that many, thought they would have brought 1.5/2k down.

Dr Who? Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 was not interested in yesterdays game at all. It would be better to have a non league team away. This would make it more old style and FA Cup like. We are not going to win the bloody thing and would prefer to get on with the league. Saying that I love the FA Cup and loved watching the giant killings yesterday, the little boys day in the sun, now that is completely different, but a home tie against Shrewsbury to us is a nothing game really. Hard to put into words but would have loved to play a Dover or FC United.... away, and be part of their big day!!

Saint_clark Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 For the first round of the FA cup getting over 10k is a very good achievement.

ladysaint Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 Thought they could have rewarded ST holders with a free ticket for this round, may have got a few more there but obviously not make any money. Though 10k was a good crowd for this round.

Saint_lambden Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 Considering that it was a main night for fireworks , the Kingsland and half the Chapel was shut and it was only Shrewsbury then you can't have been surprised at 10,000? Still the biggest in the round , Plymouth had half our crowd - now thats awful considering that's a heavily populated area around there.

Matthew Le God Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 It was the 1st time Saints had been at home in the 1st round for over 50 years. It was easily the highest attended game in the 1st round. What did you expect honestly?

JRM Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 Let's hope Cheltenham allow us to do £10 tickets for the next round, with peterborough at home on the 20th and Brighton at home on 23rd, both of which are big home games in the context of our promotion challenge, I can see people spending their money on those instead. Cheltenham on 27th should be £10 adults and £1 kids try and get 15k for it.
georgeweahscousin Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 Still the biggest crowd in the round, and that includes ties between two League One sides, I don't see the issue.
JRM Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 Still the biggest crowd in the round, and that includes ties between two League One sides, I don't see the issue. I agree, but in terms of % drop from our average home crowd it was small. I reckon we'll get about the same for Cheltenham. Maybe even less with the other home games that week.

Though 10k was a good crowd for this round. I am involved at a non league club and we are not allowed to give out Free tickets for FA Trophy and FA Cup ties. The only people allowed in for nothing are pass holders such as visiting directors.
Sheff Saint Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 Wonder what the attendance would have been like if we had have charged £25 a ticket?

Thedelldays Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 In the same way that Saints game at Notts Co last weekend was a local derby. not quite....swindon is slightly closer to plymouth than nottingham is to southampton do you know what geography is..?
The Kraken Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 not quite....swindon is slightly closer to plymouth than nottingham is to southampton do you know what geography is..? Driving distance, Plymouth to Swindon: 159.5 miles. Driving distance, Southampton to Nottingham: 166.5 miles. I suppose those 7 miles make all the difference.
Saint Lindford Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 As a ST holder object to paying £15 to watch a 4th division side, if ticket prices had been cheaper then might have made the effort to go. Chose to watch England v All Blacks on the telly instead.

Lighthouse Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 Southampton to Meadow Lane - 3 hours 8 minutes Swindon to Home Park - 2 hours 47 minutes. Not sure which "Worlds" you can drive accross in 21 minutes but there you are...

Lord Duckhunter Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 I bet the ones who had great excuses not to make the game, will be free for a third round game against The Skates or Man Utd.
