saint lard Posted 6 November, 2010 Share Posted 6 November, 2010 It appears that some people are, quite simply, never happy. We didn't play brilliantly, but we won. How many times have people moaned that we never win with late goals? Then we do and people still moan! This was Shrewsbury's big day out, in the FA Cup, and they made it hard for us, but we got there in the end. Job done, and that is all that matters. Brighton drew 0-0 at home with non-league Woking; on the basis of the reaction on this thread, I would guess that most Brighton fans have therefore topped themselves by now. Or even well according to reports. However much it is good to see us gain results while playing so poorly,it does seem to be a reoccuring theme after matches, unless we beat the mighty Tranmere or Dagenham and Redbridge, then of course everthing is rosey. We are neither convincing, consistant or as dominating as i would have hoped by now. This, by far, does not mean we should be steam rollering all and sundry,we have no devine right to do so at all. To me something is still missing. Hence i will still not join the love in with Adkins that so many have had since the moment he was linked with us.If i'm honest i think it was that fact that put me off him straightway.Good luck to the fella, take us up please. I will not apologise for my opinions,in the same way i would not expect others to do.

Weston Saint Posted 6 November, 2010 Share Posted 6 November, 2010 (edited) Davis - nothing much to do but 1 world class save Richardson - quiet game for me. Hardly noticed him there Jaidi - never put a foot wrong. May lack pace but still our best centre back with Fonte Seaborne - decent game but nothing outstanding Harding - not really at the races for me today. Could and shoulld have linked up more with Lallana Chamberlain - ok but drifted inside too much but still a great prospect. Chaplow - put himself about and I thought he had a decent game. Always trying Hammond - I know he is the holding midfielder but no where near enough effort from him. Poor header over the top when he should have scored! Lallana - Quiet first half because he did not receive the ball enough out wide. Good second half and probably my man of the match Barnard - running round or falling down without effect. Poor game Guly - seemed to be playing behind Barnard and not very effective. Couple of decent runs in the second half Connolly on for 3 minutes - 1 goal and 1 assist! Says it all Poor game and not worth the ticket money. Still we did win but not enough of the team are trying. Adkins still has a lot to sort out. Avenue Saint Posted 6 November, 2010 Share Posted 6 November, 2010 Lallana was class all game, lambert carrying too many pounds n boy did it show in his play when he came on. Needs to get fit as currently, shadow of old self! Oxo is a BIG talent n shows a lot of composure and ability on ball. Barnard n gully on totally different wavelengths. Our Brazilian clearly has ability but players around him just wouldn't pick him out for one reason or another. Not best of days for him. Hammond has another average game. Lot of energy but no attacking instinct or savy at all. Chaplow played busy n well. Not best of games overall, but lallana is fundamental to anything this team wants to achieve. Toomer Posted 6 November, 2010 Share Posted 6 November, 2010 Forget the 90 remember the 3, they gave MOM to Lallana but Chaplow edged it for me, the Shrews rushing the net when we got the first what was that all about.

Today we controlled the game but were too slow in getting it to feet, there were still some good performances especially Chaplow. Bailey Posted 6 November, 2010 Share Posted 6 November, 2010 Well, a win is a win, but it wasn't the most entertaining of matches to say the least! At least we're in the hat for the next round though. For me, Guly was poor. He strolls around way too casually for my liking, and he just wasn't at the races. Connolly did more with two touches than Guly did in 85 minutes! Other than that, there's not much else to comment on. Rather just put this one to bed, move on and look forward to Carlisle. Still a lot of work to be done before we're 'firing on all cylinders' so to speak!
sotonjoe Posted 6 November, 2010 Share Posted 6 November, 2010 This was not a pretty game. For much of the first half we simply didn't have enough possession. For parts of the second half we had more possession, but were wasteful or pressured too quickly by the opposition to know what to do with it. Things were more positive, if a little desperate, from 80mins onwards, but it was still looking unlikely that we would score. Lallana frustrated me today. I thought he had the whiff of Fernandes about him; turning this way and that, frequently without an end product. I know he scored, but that doesn't negate the bad points of his performance. I don't think he does a great deal when he's off the ball either. Chamberlain struggled to have the same impression he did against Notts County; his football brain clearly hasn't developed yet at the tender age of 17! He found himself in the wrong position to receive the ball on occasions and couldn't do the right thing with the ball at times when he had it. Leaving the game, I knew that if it hadn't been for those two surprise goals, we would have all been very, very disappointed with the performance. markr27 Posted 6 November, 2010 Share Posted 6 November, 2010 Second half Shrewsbury hardly threatened and it was all Saints, but they just had no end product and were choosing the complicated pass when a simple one would do far too often. Aside from a five minute spell during that period, I got the feeling that Shrewsbury had one eye on the replay and a possible TV pot of cash, but they were denied by the superb move that led to the opener. You can understand people leaving in injury time, but not five minutes from the end. Perhaps this result will stop that, for the next game at least... I still think the central midfield needs a box-to-box attacking midfielder, Ryan Harley at Exeter would fit the bill perfectly.

Chez Posted 6 November, 2010 Share Posted 6 November, 2010 Very interesting game. Shrewsbury were a decent side if lacking in real adventure until the last 15 minutes or so. We dominated pretty much from start to finish but just didn't tuck away the couple of chances we had such as Jaidi missing from a yard or so. I thought we lost our way pretty much as soon as AOC was wrongly substituted. It was a poor decision, with Guly looking lost out wide, not causing any threat going forward and not tracking his runner. Their left back started to come into the game and we had to do some defending. Guly shouild have been subbed about five minutes after he was moved to the right, but Adkins was far too slow making the change. We ran out of ideas and went as tad ragged. Yes the late sub won the game, but IMO Adkins got it wrong and should have made the move much much earlier. Still, it all worked out and class told in the end with some great play by Harding, Lallana and Conelly for the two goals. Davis 7 one great save, distribution spot on. Came and caught. Faultless really. Richardson 7 Very solid, a little hit and miss on the angled balls. Seaborne 8 I am not a fan, but he was as solid as a rock, albeit against a small forward, and apart from one or two poor passes (considering how many attacks he started that isn't bad) his distribution was pretty good. I imagine a few will disagree as they have made their minds up about him, but he is improving, I still wonder if he will do it against better attacks. Jaidi 8 never loses a header. If we are playing aganst a lump he has to start. Good positional play in first half. Personally I just feel confident defending set peices, much more so than with Fonte. Harding 7 The winger beat him for pace early doors and I thought it might be a tough day, but he was never exposed again and he was not beaten again. Brilliant run for the goal. Chamberlain 8 Caused lots of problems for them in the first half, genuine threat, but worked back hard as well. Should not have been subbed IMO and we went downhill fast afterwards. I can only think it was to rest him for next Saturday. Chaplow 9 MOTM. Absolutely everywhere. Hammond 7 decent controlled display. Allows Chaplow the freedom to charge forward. A couple of poor passes as he tired late on. Lots of square stuff, but he kept us moving. Again, I'm not a big fan, but hard to complain his workrate. Lallana 7 usual flair and skill but not quite enough end product...until he made it happen at the end. He is a class act. Guly 4 OK up front, working hard across the line, but a little too slow and casual in posession, and never real did much to hurt them Barnard 3 Lots and lots of poor first touches, which is not like him. One great chance when he got a yard head start on their big CB, but he beat him for pace which is a little embaressing . Still worked hard, but not this day. Lambert Yet more poor touches, too slow and still leaving my very uninspired. Connelly Sharp and great to see him show is striker postional play. Holmes Looked sharpo and strong in only little run he had

Hunt's Copse used to be my Sunday team's home ground until this season. Apparently the FA didn't like lots of teams that weren't 'senior' sides playing on it (so much for supporting grass roots football I guess). Lighthouse Posted 6 November, 2010 Share Posted 6 November, 2010 (edited) Adam post-match 'chat' in the Itchen today: I was stood right next to you. "Have you got Morgan's number?" Thought it was a very dull game with nobody really standing out as great. Chaplow and Lallana were decent and Connolly had a good cameo, but for 90 minutes there was absolutely f**k all to get excited about. Hammond put a header miles over, Chaplow found row Q in the first few minutes and that was about it. We won. It was NEVER going to be a classic against a 'play for a replay' League 2 side but we got there in the end. lol@the leave early brigade. Also I think I can shed some light onto where we're going wrong Shot by Dan Harding (Southampton) left-footed from left side of the penalty area (18 yards); saved (punched) by Kelvin Davis (Southampton) Edited 6 November, 2010 by Lighthouse

corky morris Posted 6 November, 2010 Share Posted 6 November, 2010 We were poor pretty much all game. My 3 year old's first ever Saints game. He lasted 35 minutes before asking when we were going home which I thought was quite good! Why when we are at home against a team a division below us do we insist on having nobody up the park when the opposition have a corner?? Even they kept one up when we had one!!! Stupid if you ask me. I thought nobody was outstanding. Chaplow tried hard, but gives the ball away too much. Hammond was pretty poo. Again he tries hard, but would not know how to deliver a killer pass if he was given 10 minutes & written instructions. Harding assisted for the first goal, but apart from that was not good. Guly???? Not sure why we have him on loan. Simply does not do anything special. I would let him go back to Italy & get us a young quick striker from somewhere (easier said than done though).
