norwaysaint Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 How many US states do you think there are? I've been amazed at how many people don't know the right answer. Try to answer without checking this thread or any other site.
Lets B Avenue Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 50. As The The sang in 86. "We are the 51st state of the USA."
JackFrost Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 (edited) isn't it 46? because Massachusetts, Tennessee and a couple of other 'states' are technically commonwealths? Edited 6 November, 2010 by JackFrost

Try to answer without checking this thread or any other site. I'm not sure why you're amazed. Theres 50 but hawaii and alaska aren't the most obvious to think of. It's not exactly top of the British school curriculum, and i doubt 100% of americans would know straight away if questioned in a family fortunes style quiz!
Whitey Grandad Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 The number of states is the same as the number of stars on the flag. The number of stripes is the number of original states in the Union. If you see wartime footage you can see the different pattern. What is also surprising is how recently many of the states have joined the Union. Florida was the latest before Alaska and Hawai, I believe in the 1920s.
scotty Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 UK needs to be included. and I did vaguely remember it being 52, didnt the purchase of Alaska bring it up to that? Or was Hawaii the last one added?

Whitey Grandad Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/States_of_the_United_States I was wrong about Florida, 1845 the same as Texas. Oklahoma joined 1907, New Mexico & Arizona 1912. The flag of Hawaii includes the Union Jack in the top left corner. Massachusetts, Virginia, Pennsylvania & Kentucky are Commonwealths. Puerto Rico is a US state in all but name
Deppo Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 Is it 51? I'm pretty sure it is because there's that film about Alaska called "The 51st state"
Baj Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 50, 51st state is always used as an abstract, like "12th man" in football
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 They're in a financial state right now f'sure.
rocknrollman no2 Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 Its 50 because many years ago when i was at school i had an arguement with my history teacher, when i said i thought it was 52.He made me get a map and write down every one. Well it definately worked because to this day i have always remembered it.
badgerx16 Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 Google says 52. Trader Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 There are 50. Alaska was 49th, Hawaii 50th and Harold Wilson wanted us to be 51st. There used to be talk of the Philippines joining too.
hamster Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 Pennsylvaina is named after Admial Penn who set sail from Deal Beach to found it. Second most famous person to have lived in Deal, but he wasn't born there which would have made him an even better man imho.
saint boggy Posted 6 November, 2010 Posted 6 November, 2010 (edited) havent looked at the answer or any of the replies on this thread.....i've always thought it was 52...... EDIT:... ah.......i see i thought wrong!!! Edited 6 November, 2010 by saint boggy
