I'm not sure why you're amazed. Theres 50 but hawaii and alaska aren't the most obvious to think of. It's not exactly top of the British school curriculum, and i doubt 100% of americans would know straight away if questioned in a family fortunes style quiz!

The number of states is the same as the number of stars on the flag. The number of stripes is the number of original states in the Union. If you see wartime footage you can see the different pattern. What is also surprising is how recently many of the states have joined the Union. Florida was the latest before Alaska and Hawai, I believe in the 1920s.

I was wrong about Florida, 1845 the same as Texas. Oklahoma joined 1907, New Mexico & Arizona 1912. The flag of Hawaii includes the Union Jack in the top left corner. Massachusetts, Virginia, Pennsylvania & Kentucky are Commonwealths. Puerto Rico is a US state in all but name

Its 50 because many years ago when i was at school i had an arguement with my history teacher,when i said i thought it was 52.He made me get a map and write down every one.

Well it definately worked because to this day i have always remembered it.

Alaska was 49th, Hawaii 50th and Harold Wilson wanted us to be 51st.

Pennsylvaina is named after Admial Penn who set sail from Deal Beach to found it. Second most famous person to have lived in Deal, but he wasn't born there which would have made him an even better man imho.
