Footballfan Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 Anyone found any deals for this game yet, trains are costing more every time I go away.
bowers-sfc Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 on national rail, I found £25 for single there, change once. way back... if you wait until 8pm, and take the slower train, change 3 times. £12
Andy_Porter Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 The train companies have almost doubled the prices just because it's the last Saturday before xmas. Four travelling together from Soton the week before costs £30 pp, on the 18th 52pp. Looked at going on the national express from Southampton and it was just as expensive. We are going up to London Victoria and then getting national express from there to Birminham, think it works out at £25 each based on four travelling together. Gets to Birmingham at 12.35 so I'll be fairly drunk by then I'd have thought
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 You can get a mega bus to Birmingham £14 return then a return from Birmingham to Walsall for £4.90. Therefore if you don't mind getting a bus you can get a return for £18.90.
Griffo Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 If you split the journey up, you can get from Reading to Birmingham New Street for 11 pound single. 22 pounds in total with the return and then only the small fare from Southampton - Reading to worry about.
hamster Posted 5 November, 2010 Posted 5 November, 2010 I managed £32 return using raileasy, arrive 12:44 leave after game 18:23 https://directrail.raileasy.co.uk/go/home/?content=fare.default2main

Cheap ways of going from London to Brum are the line out of Marylebone to either Snow Hill or Moor Street (always cheap, even if you pay on the day and although slow, I'd take that over a coach) or the London Midland Service from Euston - again it is slow, but if you have Network South East Cards, buy returns to Northampton (or wherever the last station is within the "south east", I can't remember) and then another return from there to Brum. Also worth buying your tickets through to the Bescot/Walsall, as its minimal extra cost on the ticket and saves hassle on the day.

Cheers mate, going through Euston saved a few quid and I don't have to go on the coach.

Dan Posted 7 November, 2010 Posted 7 November, 2010 I booked mine last month. Southampton to Walsall via Brum New Street 9:15 returning from New Street at 19:ish for £22 return.
Andy_Porter Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 What's the best website for cheap train deals? I always use trainline.com and never seem to see any of these cheap pre booked deals.
SaintMilesie Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 I booked mine last month. Southampton to Walsall via Brum New Street 9:15 returning from New Street at 19:ish for £22 return. You did well mate we just paid £35 each from Soton to Walsall, arrive New Street 12.15
stevegrant Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 It baffles me why people continue to use thetrainline.com - they offer exactly the same routes and fares as the operators themselves, but they whack on handling fees at the end as well. I usually book mine through Virgin Trains, although it's often worth checking the operator of the train you're travelling on to see if the fare is slightly different. One leg of the return trip from Carlisle this week is using TransPennine Express rather than Virgin, and the same fare was about £3 cheaper than Virgin through their site.
scott_saints Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 Fock off, just came up as 60 odd quid each for a return, and that's with a groupsaver. Hmmm...
scott_saints Posted 8 November, 2010 Posted 8 November, 2010 Had more of a play around. 37 quid each to Birmingham New Street return from Eastleigh. Bit more acceptable. Will taxi the Brum New street to Bescot bit.
Hemel Saint Posted 10 November, 2010 Posted 10 November, 2010 Had more of a play around. 37 quid each to Birmingham New Street return from Eastleigh. Bit more acceptable. Will taxi the Brum New street to Bescot bit. you could train it. Bescot Stadium Station is right behind the away end, and the train to new street return is just £3.10. approx every half hour and a 20-30 min trip.

Bescot Stadium Station is right behind the away end, and the train to new street return is just £3.10. approx every half hour and a 20-30 min trip. I couldn't seem to get decent times/prices online, but suppose we could just buy the Brum New Street tickets in advance, and the final leg to Bescot on the day.
SaintMilesie Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 I booked mine last month. Southampton to Walsall via Brum New Street 9:15 returning from New Street at 19:ish for £22 return. For those going up by train any idea of best pub within 5-10mins walk from New Street Station ?
stevegrant Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 Fock off, just came up as 60 odd quid each for a return, and that's with a groupsaver. Hmmm... I don't think Cross Country accept Group Saver tickets... have you tried looking at going via London?
Kaiser Soze Posted 8 December, 2010 Posted 8 December, 2010 Break the journey up - Soton to Reading, Reading to Banbury, & Banbury to Brum. It means an extra few tickets but works out alot cheaper because you can take advantage of the cheap days returns rather than one open return on the one ticket. The service from Soton to Brum goes via all these stations so you don't need to get off. Doing this it's about £35 quid return, whereas Soton to Brum on one ticket is about £65.

Although, I might be wrong, but can just do it Southampton - Banbury and then Banbury - Walsall.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 9 December, 2010 Posted 9 December, 2010 For those who don't know, the Bescot stadium has its own train station. Not sure if it has been mentioned already but i can't be bothered to look. Any idea how many tickets have been sold?
voteforpedro Posted 13 December, 2010 Posted 13 December, 2010 Got my 3 tickets in the post today, but no idea how many have been sold. After saturday I'm not sure we'll shift all 2,300. It was a pretty good atmosphere last season with 1,800 I think, I'd expect to get around that again.
Saints foreva Posted 13 December, 2010 Posted 13 December, 2010 There's a topic on the Walsall forum that says we have requested more tickets. Surely that can't be right?
SaintMilesie Posted 18 December, 2010 Posted 18 December, 2010 I don't think Cross Country accept Group Saver tickets... have you tried looking at going via London? Does any one know if Cross Country trains ran today between 9am - 10am ?
