The Kraken Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 still...remains that our record straight after a cup game over last season was poor and cost us... Why cup games in particular? What about midweek league games, do they not count?
Lighthouse Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 (edited) still...remains that our record straight after a cup game over last season was poor and cost us... WTF? No it doesn't we've just explained this. We lost many other games and put in some poor performances in games which didn't follow cup ties. There were also wins against Charlton and Ipswich which were left out of the list of games following cup ties. If you still don't believe me, look at the 2nd biggest distraction we had last season. Pompey in the cup. Next game? We went and hammered the eventual champions in their own back yard. What is it about a cup game which prevents you from performing well in the League exactly? Don't bother mate; it's a ridiculous accusation using less than sound logic to try to prove a (very poor) point. It doesn't take into account the fact that many games were played away from home, against decent opposition. It doesn't take into account that some cup games were played on Saturdays. It doesn't take into account the cup games played after a cup game. It doesn't take into account occasions where we played a league game during the week and then again at the weekend; surely if weekday cup games are a problem then weekday league games are too? In short, its a very trivial argument to try and make. And as you rightly say, if playing cup games were such a problem it doesn't explain why, having done so, we were subsequently able to give the League champions a hammering on their own patch, turn over Ipswich (from a league above), beat Charlton in the JPT etc etc.

So much so that for all but one week we played a midweek game. So the cups stretched us right? And by your reasoning we should have struggled because of that, correct? Our record for March and April was: WLWLWWWDWWWWDW. That is simply brilliant form, and came when we were playing more games that at any other time in the season. So I'm afraid your argument just doesn't hold up.

You're saying the midweek cup games definitely caused us to lose points, but the midweek league games didin't. It doesn't make sense.

There is far more to it than that as we've already explained.

Block 5 Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 God help us! Another plank pops up in the form of saint mears.

To me, by neglecting to look at midweek league games in the same manner, it's about as relevant as saying that we dropped 17 points to teams whose names begin with the letter B. Anyway, let's leave it there. Past history anyway, and it's not as if we have any cup distractions this year anyway....

doddisalegend Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 still...remains that our record straight after a cup game over last season was poor and cost us... How do you know what the results would have been if we had not played a cup game before hand? we might have still lost those games we will never know you've got nothing to compare to. We won a ****ing cup only saints fans would complain about winning a trophy after 34 years of not winning anything.
Lighthouse Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 Our highest League finish in the last 20 years was 8th in 2003. Just goes to show what a team can achieve if they don't have an extended cup run to distract them.
corsacar saint Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 Without being pedantic our highest league finish in the last 20 years was 7th last season.[Albeit in league 1,and not in the premiership where we achieved 8th].For the record with that 7th finish last season,we did pretty well in the cups.

I'd call that 51st (20 + 24 + 7), but yes that's being pedantic. We also finished 6th in the CCC a couple of years ago.
Wes Tender Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 ... and it's not as if we have any cup distractions this year anyway.... So we've told Shrewsbury that we're not interested in a Cup run this year?
aintforever Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 You're right, we won't agree. Anyway, let's leave it there. Past history anyway, and it's not as if we have any cup distractions this year anyway.... Not really irrelevant, if we play a scheduled midweek game the team we play on the Saturday would also have played midweek so it's no disadvantage either way. The only disadvantage could be when we play a rearranged midweek game due to an FA cup run. A friend of mine is good friends with another League 1 manager and he says they are "Glad" to be out of the JPT - that's a word of a professional football manger. Our results for last year following cup games don't prove that it was a distraction but it proves beyond any doubt that winning cup games creates a "winning habit" than transfers into league form. I think we probably played more games than Man Utd last year, it had to be a distraction IMO when the ONLY thing that mattered was getting promoted.
Thedelldays Posted 4 November, 2010 Author Posted 4 November, 2010 The charity Barnados look set to rake in the cash after Nicola Cortese airbrushed several saints legends from the club history, meaning that Saints fans are now able to donate large amounts of autobiographies and momentoes to the charity. Already the book Dell Diamond is on the Barnados shelves as Saints supporters consider it a work of complete fantasy and a phoney second only to the Turin Shroud. Thousands of fans are expected to shake Cortese by the hand at the Shrewsbury game to thank him for exposing Bates as complete fantasy and for refusing to allow the sham to continue by cancelling the Ted Bates Trophy game. Mick Channon was also exposed as a charlatan and a man who was only concerened about lining his own pockets when he deserted the club for Man City and Cortese has already started to take down the signs for the Mick Channon suite now calling it the 125 Club in honour of the number of year Saints supporters have been waiting for him to arrive. wow...straight from the uglies....
corsacar saint Posted 5 November, 2010 Posted 5 November, 2010 Your right about the 6th position Lighthouse, perhaps you and I should both brush up on our facts.
Lighthouse Posted 5 November, 2010 Posted 5 November, 2010 Your right about the 6th position Lighthouse, perhaps you and I should both brush up on our facts. It's all pretty trivial anyway.
Saint in Paradise Posted 5 November, 2010 Posted 5 November, 2010 Over the very long period I have followed Saints ( I am quite old ) having Mr Cortese in control has given me a lot more confidence that Saints will be very sucessful. I have in fact not felt this way for many many years. Really sucessful people have to be a tad ruthless at times and make choices that some others find distasteful. How sad, too bad. They also make mistakes now and then but as long as they learn from them they tend to go from strength to strength. Posters should remember that Mr Cortese has to answer to the Liebherr family who no doubt want Saints to be a great sucess. Whether that is to sell the club or for their personal satisfaction no-one on here can answer.
