Southampton are chasing £2.5m-rated Doncaster midfielder Brian stock, 28, after he snubbed a new deal. This source is from the daily star.

I doubt he'd cost Saints anywhere near £2.5m, with his contract running out in summer 2011, injury problems, nearly 30 etc. Would still be a great signing though!

Not worth even half that amount IMO. £1m would be a huge amount to pay for this player - £750k absolute tops I would suggest.

That's true. Probably half that then.

£2.5m? Behave, we payed that for Prutton when he was England U-21 captain. £750k - £1m would be somewhere about right, although half that would be reasonable if his contract is up in summer.

He is probably the best player in a mid table team in the League above Saints. I think he'd be great.

He was at his best 2 years ago, he missed the boat and so did we. I am sure there are better alternatives.

He is generally regarded as their best player but has had injury problems as you mentioned.

Having said that, as Stocks is keen to join Saints and is out of contract in July 2011, we could either sign him for a fee around £200k in January, or get him for nothing in July hopefully ready for the Championship next season. Brian Howard only signed a 3 year contract last summer and would be expensive but he has said that he would like to finish his career at SMS. From our point of view Stocks is much more likely.
