TijuanaTim Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 ...pennies to Brum for Europe's best left back and the finest player of our 'almost' team. Big Ron - Are you kidding me, all those goals for our moderate (at best) late 60's side. Dominated every single centre back that had the misfortune of trying to stop him. Dean Richards - was great for us, got a shedload for him and neve played a good game again. KD .75 in - 7.5 out, nuff said. Jimmy Case - old when we got him, even older when he left after many great seasons as a true leader. Who else...?
corsacar saint Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 I always thought you were a good judge of a player Kenny.[but then I doubt you would probably dismiss a player, that you have probably not seen play, like most on here].[Andy]
TijuanaTim Posted 2 November, 2010 Author Posted 2 November, 2010 Anthony Pulis - Who's she? ;-) Bambi - awesome Cassells - s****** Bally - oh yeah, terrific!!
Lets B Avenue Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 I respectfully suggest that you refer to the Stockport Fans site. I also have a good friend who is a Lincoln fan and has seen enough bad players to make a judgement. (No offence intended.)
Thedelldays Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 Le Tiss....cost nothing Niemi and Killer.. £2m each
Stu Man Do Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 James Beattie - 1 million really important goals out for 6.5 million Marian Pahars - 1m(ish)? The amount of money he must have saved the club with his relegation saving goals in the great escape season alone make him a good deal. Jasmine Wright/ Jason Mule - provided me and friends with hours of entertaining banter!
mikee Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 Ivan Golac Kevin Keegan Jimmy Case Chris Marsden and probably the best of all: MLT and Channon
TijuanaTim Posted 2 November, 2010 Author Posted 2 November, 2010 Shilts FFS - how did we forget him?
TijuanaTim Posted 2 November, 2010 Author Posted 2 November, 2010 MLT - Bale - Big Chiv - TheO etc all time brilliant, however was more looking for the sorta 35 grand spent on 'Psycho', complete waster with limitless ability 'til Lawrie mac signed him. Then instantly transformed into the consummate over-lapping, hard tackling, intimidating left back - Terrace icon t'boot. One of us out there kicking Dalgleish etc and taking the p!ss out of the best!!
Crab Lungs Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 Our Claus...in the middle of defence ! Most definitely. Awesome service for £400,000
Saint-Fred Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 Although at the end of his career with us, I always liked Mick Mills- around £40k and played around 100 games or so for us.
Saint-Fred Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 Shilts FFS - how did we forget him? Does that count..wasn't he the most expensive keeper in the world or something close at the time?
Under Weststand Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 (edited) Ivan Golac what an inspired signing he was & for a mere £50,000. Also Ivan Katalinic (or could be Catastrophic) was a great shot stopper but absaloute pants coming of his line for crosses. Edited 2 November, 2010 by Under Weststand
Badger Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 David Armstrong Good shout, possibly our most underestimated player we've had. But for value I agree with Dennis and Golac . From the 1970's - David Peach c£60,000 and Alan Ball 1960's - John McGrath, Jimmy Gabriel and above all Big Ron. Could of course add Terry Paine from the 1950's if we accept he was signed from Winchester rather than a 'youth product' from Winchester.
Dalek2003 Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 I agree with you Badger, Alan Ball was a great by on both accounts as a footballer and manager ! I reckon David Armstrong 'Bald Eagle' was one of the very unassuming but consumate professionals. Did a great job for us in the middle of the Pak and for his club 'Boro before us. One of my all time favourites.
VectisSaint Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 Edric Bates, how can anyone be better value for money than Mr Southampton For players that I saw play probably has to be Alan Ball.
paulwantsapint Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 Jason Dodd signed from bath for few grand played over 400 games Plus he is 40 today
benjii Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 Mickey Evans, hell you gotta be yanking my chain dude - this bro' was signed on a goddarn shoestring and hit the goal-strikes that maintained our EPL status when we were staring down the barrell of an early roster pick!
TijuanaTim Posted 2 November, 2010 Author Posted 2 November, 2010 benjii - nice effort me ol' China...not at the game then?
TijuanaTim Posted 2 November, 2010 Author Posted 2 November, 2010 (edited) Hmm...what did we pay for Shilton, I cannot remember, maybe 100K? Edited 2 November, 2010 by TijuanaTim
benjii Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 benjii - nice effort me ol' China...not at the game then? Cheers! No, not tonight. My location is actually wrong. I don't live in Soton anymore so seldom make the midweek games unfortunately.
Saint-Fred Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 Hmm...what did we pay for Shilton, I cannot remember, maybe 100K? I think it was 325k.
mcjwills Posted 2 November, 2010 Posted 2 November, 2010 Ivan Golac what an inspired signing he was & for a mere £50,000. Also Ivan Katalinic (or could be Catastrophic) was a great shot stopper but absaloute pants coming of his line for crosses. + 1
SuperMikey Posted 3 November, 2010 Posted 3 November, 2010 Shame Mark Dennis is such a c*nt on this forum.
Turkish Posted 3 November, 2010 Posted 3 November, 2010 Joe Jordan £50k from Verona Jason Dodd, signed as a kid from Bath, made is debut in the 4-1 win v Liverpool at home in 89 and never looked back Marion Pahars, £600k? Scored the goals to keep us up in the great escape season and a class player.
alpine_saint Posted 3 November, 2010 Posted 3 November, 2010 How about doing a "worst sale" or "best signings from Saints" ? Alan Shearer. Stands a mile above the rest. And we got f**k all for him (well, Speedie and Dixon counted as f**k all). Proof, if any more above team performance were needed, of what a prize c**t Branfoot was.

rolosfc Posted 3 November, 2010 Posted 3 November, 2010 Our Claus Chrissy Marsden football genius (loved the Paul Wotton version of this last night!) Ostenstad Kevin Davies

No sell on clause on the Shearer deal either, although a British record at the time looking back we were robbed. You dont know what you are talking about Alps "Dixon and Speedie will score more goals than Alan Shearer this season"
ericofarabia Posted 3 November, 2010 Posted 3 November, 2010 Thinking back to the mid 70's and early 80's , Lawrie was picking up players in the twilight of their careers for a song, and squeezing one last hurrah out of them. Obviously Bally and Jimmy Case have been mentioned but how about the likes of Phil Boyer (Phil Boyer 1st division top scorer!!) and his partner in crime Super Mac (Ted Macdougal) and not forgetting FA Cup winning captain Peter Rodrigues. And of course he snapped up Steve moran for the price of a pair of new football boots. Aye Lawrie was canny man !!
explorer saint Posted 3 November, 2010 Posted 3 November, 2010 Eyal Berkovic, just turned up at the Dell with his boots one day and asked for a game.
sebastian firefly Posted 3 November, 2010 Posted 3 November, 2010 Frank Worthington i still look for his name on the team sheet and always feel a little downcast each time i cant see it i think it was he that trully got me hooked on saints williams worthington wallace armstrong moran please dont wake me
The Sholing Shadow Posted 3 November, 2010 Posted 3 November, 2010 Alan Ball was probably our best value for money signing of all times, but Kevin Keegan, Dave Watson and of course Shilton must be up there. Le Tiss wasnt a signing - if he was he would be the best obviously.
georgeweahscousin Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 Marsden was pretty cheap, £350k or something like that. What about Ronnie Ekelund. Not a penny.
dune Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 Marsden was pretty cheap, £350k or something like that. Agree with this. He was pivotal in our good spell at St Marys. Ever since he left we went down hill and it's only now that we're recovering.
Fan The Flames Posted 4 November, 2010 Posted 4 November, 2010 I think Case is the winner, a mere £30k from Brighton. Lets hope we can take the **** out of them again this season.
