Yorkshire People

Not really, if you read the OP and the tile, it's the attitude of the people in this boundry, not the locations inside it.

Just to make it easier to understand, it would be a bit like a Yorkshireman saying that those people from Hampshire are an insufferable lot, especially those from Southampton, Portsmouth, Chichester and Haywards Heath.

So IMO your assertion is weakened because two of the places that you gave as examples aren't even in Yorkshire. Mind you, it would also be absurd though to believe that once one crosses a boundary line on a map into a different County that the character of the indigenous population would alter greatly or that the characters of the city dwellers is identical to that of the country folk. This is the problem with broad sweeping generalisations.

As for Earl Grey and Darjeeling being head and shoulders above Yorkshire Tea, that is surely a matter of personal taste.

Oh i dont have a problem understanding it, i understand totally what you are saying. I've already corrected myself swapping S****horpe and Grimsby for Selby, Rotherham, Doncaster, Keighly, you could add Wakefield as already been mentioned or Batley, Castleford, Guiseley etc. As usual on here though you cant make a point or raise a light hearted off topic conversation without people nit picking at it and trying to prove what a clever clogs they are.

So where exactly do they grow the tea in Yorkshire?

( Please note, this post is in no way intended to cause offence or present a rascist opinion. It merely illustrates a local colloquial nomenclature applied to a northern former mill town, by it's indigenous population ).

I and a couple of the guys from the same company worked in Dewsbury for a while and made some friends there. We arranged to meet up with our firends for a night out on a stop over after a Saints game at Old Trafford a few years ago. Before we could head off on the night out, we had to go to our friends brother in laws birthday party in a pub in Wakefield. Our friend told us that everything had been arranged and we were welcome to go along. However we got a shock when we got there to find that the place had been decorated with confederate flags and that the birthday boy was wearing a state troopers uniform from one of the southern states, and a few of his mates were wearing confederate uniforms.

I got the distinct impression that Southerners were not welcome unless they were of the gap toothed, ye-haa, family member sexual loving variety from the US of A. I was expecting the birthday cake to come out with burning crosses on it instead of candles. Things got more frosty from there and we eventually made our exit when our friends sister said it would be better if we left, I certainly wasn't going to argue with her.

That's not the only bad experience i've had with the so called friendly Yorkshire people either, so do not agree that they are nice and friendly people at all.

As for places on a par with the worst Yorkshire has to offer such as Wakefield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Batley, you need look no further than Portsmouth. By the way Basingstoke is a great place to live, as it offers so many things to do and has lots of well maintained public parks. I lived in East London for 15 years and can honestly say that Basingstoke is a fantastic place to live in comparison.

It's amazing how different people's experiences differ so much isn't it. I lived in Basingstoke for about a year at the end of the 90s and the impression I got from it is that it is a soul-destroying, god-awful, chav-infested, depressing concrete sh*thole. Swings and roundabouts (and where Basingstoke is concerned, mostly roundabouts) I guess.

on the slag heaps, everyone knows that.

isn't it on Ilkley Moor?*

*I hope the people of Nidderdale, Gardale, Littondale and Wharfdale and any other Yorkshire based moor or dale i have not mentioned are not offended by my assumption that Yorkshire tea is grown on Ilkley moor.

What about Cornwall then? Hardly any sh*tholes, mile upon mile of countryside and cute little villages plus a stunning coastline, dont here to cornish arrogantly claiming how wonderful it and they are.

there's me thinking the locals regarded themselves as being from a separate country.

Apart from the hardcore nutters who want independence for Kernow you mean? Hey, I'm not arguing with because I love Cornwall, and I'm not blindly defending Yorkshire either because I wasn't born here or anything. I just think you're being a bit harsh. In my experience, people from Lancashire are just as bad as Yorkshire folk for the negative traits you have described, and they have the added disadvantage of having towns like Accrington, Burnley and Blackburn, which are just as bad as anything that Yorskhire has to offer.

I can confirm that Dewsbury is full of nutters. My brother lives in Huddersfield and is a paramedic, he had a brick thrown at his ambulance windscreen while 'blue lighting' at 60 mph in Dewsbury. You will all also remember the Shannon Matthews debacle, well she lived there. I have another story from a copper, but I'm not going to repeat it, as I'm likely to get banned...

Aye .... but don't forget they had tough.

You try telling the youth of today ... they won't believe ya ;)

I've worked with a few Yorkies in my time and several of them were exactly as

portrayed!

Everyone's entitled to a Yorkie's opinion and one of them was even reported as

saying "There's two ways to do a job. There's my way and the wrong way"

Dogged, dour, determined and most would cut their own nose off to prove they

were being fair.

Great guys to be honest but, from my experience, the generalisms are close to

correct.

Well isn't that precisely the reproach that Turkish is levelling against Yorkshire folk? Cogito ergo sum, I am not a fan of Yorkshire.

The grimmest, darkest, dankest, hole in Lancashire is the Garden of Eden compared to the best that might be found on the 'wrong' side of t'hills.

Well I love living in Sheffield, and there is not a force in this universe that could make me want to live in places like Nelson, Chorley or ****heroe.

I do hope this doesn't cause you any offence.

Ooooh, that's pretty offensive.

In which case I apologise unreservedly. It was a callous remark, made without any consideration for the feelings of others who may have read it, and I feel shame and remorse for any distress, pain, suffering or death which my thoughtless actions may have caused.

Where does The North start then in people's opinions, I reckon it's Crewe?

I can't begin to imagine what it must be like to be a northerner, but they do come across as a generally glum race. Then again they do seem to see us as a bit stuck up, even our lower classes are seen as posh and superior in our own minds.

I've spent my whole life moving around the country and have lived in most counties, plus 14 years in jolly Jocko-land.

I've come to the conclusion that everyone's a c**t except me.

*hopefully I have offended you all in equal measure.

Chesterfield.

It's in Derbyshire and the inhabitants consider themselves as Midlanders rather than Northerners. But head 10 miles north to Sheffield and you are in no doubt that you're 'ooop north'.

Watford Gap. Northerners have no sense of humour. Not like us, anyway.
