Saints 3 Notts County 1 - Post Match Reaction

OK the result is great and a big morale boost.

But, that is the second away game in a row where we forgot to turn up for the kick-off, and produced kindergarten errors of marking from set pieces.

Something somewhere still needs to be tightened up, either it is complacency in the players or concentration, but it is still down to things possibly being done wrong on the training ground. (Familiarity breeds contempt maybe? Our facilities are too good and too professional for this level?)

If we are to really move on and make this a memorable season then these (possibly) mental problems have to be solved, on another day - as at Huddersfield - we may not be able to mount a stirring comeback as we are too far out the game already.

Don't believe it is simply a "manager" thing at all, think sometimes our players really don't seem to start the games understanding they have to fight for the right to be "The Best Squad in this League". At home they can impose themselves with pace and skill. Sometimes away they may need to think more.

If we don't solve it, we'll still win enough to go up but IMHO we will still have a roller coaster ride. If we DO sort it out then we really could be on our way and with two games to come against Brighton we could cruise past them before the end of the season.

Overall great start for Adkins, much better position now than last season and much more fun on the match thread watching the first half wrist slitters morph into Happy Bunnies, and it certainly left me in a great mood last night.

But I am damned sure our Nige won't get carried away by the return of our long lost friend the 3-1. Still work to be done I believe.

Brighton are not penniless. How much have they been promised and who is their backer ?

Brighton's backer is their Chairman Tony Bloom. I believe his father was was also an Albion director years ago. Bloom is a local multi-millionaire - his Dad made a fortune in business and TB is a property investor and a professional poker player. He put £80m into the club last year. The cash was said to be mainly to finish the stadium, but they attracted Poyet as manager and brought inquite a raft of signings in the close season.

We do need to beat them on Nov 23 and remind them that we are the team on the south coast.

A Very Good result and we could be in the Play Offs by 10 pm on Tuesday the first time in League 1

Although I think the Penalty and sending off was desrerved we need these sort of decisions to continue to go for us .

Apart from Brighton I cannot see that any other team is guaranteed a playoff or promotion place so I am confident that we will have every chance to be promoted

Was his dad one of those who sold them down the river when they sold Goldstone

2,229 away support

Good numbers

On the field County without 4 players and down to 10 which favoured us.

Seems we have still to hit top form

...and I see the total attendance is given as around 9,500 which means the ground was only half full. Get away, there's a pub nearby called the 'VAT and Fiddle', how appropriate. We had over half of the stand down one side, County fans in the other bit and every other stand looked 80%-90% full.

Good noise from the home fans, mainly their 'Kop'...needed the drums to get them going tho'.

It was his Grandad who was apparently vice chairman in the 70's so no. In fact he may well have been there during their most sucessful period.

Thay said we still need to beat them next month.

Poor start to the game by Saints - we were second to every ball and didn't look like we were ready for the game to start. Fonte was excellent at the back and made several crucial tackles to keep us in the game. Up front Barnard was palying well and loked like he wanted to win, but was getting hacked by the County defense and getting no support from the officials. Rickie was double marked for most of the match and didn't really do too much except the free-kick which hit the post. It was no surprise when they scored. A lot of our attacking went through the Punch, who always seemed to run into dead-ends orplayed a far too ambitious ball. I don't remember seeing much of MS or Lallana much in the first half - Hammond was putting himself about but we were losing it in midfield.

Second half didn't really start much better and to be frank, until the penalty and red card, I was expecting us to lose. Even playing with 10 men we managed to let them threaten us far too much, and even with the second goal (couldn't see too much from where I was stood) we didn't look very comfortable. Lallana's goal was pure class, what a player!

MOM - Barnard - for keeping their defense nervous and occupied all game.

Great day out. Only two things to say davies love him and hate him. JP he musy be giving cortese's mrs one, why esle would he even be in hampshire. Not only would i have subsituted him he would be walking home via hong kong.

JP seems to have changed his style of play of late, he used to be a bit of a card collector, total of 9 yellows and a red last season, now he's gone all pussy and I don't think he's had a single card this season as yet.Anyway as I don't think AOC is as yet ready for week in week out 90 minute football I might be persuaded to try a Hammond,Schneiderlin,Chaplow,Lallana midfield and keep

Barney and Lambert in attack against Dagenham.

With Chaplow on the wing? interesting idea

no with either he or Morgan playing in front of the other 2 in a free role,it works for a lot of other sides that don't use conventional wide players. It might allow us to play higher up than of late.Lambert used to like going out wide a bit last year, oh I don't mean racing down the flank all the time but he did have a penchant for pulling out wide right and launching attacks from there. With Lallana,Barney and Lambert we'd have a very nice looking 4-3-3 set up and benefit from all our better players being on the pitch at the same time.

Still quite concerned despite the win. There was an alarming lack of creativity right from kickoff, and even now as I am writing this I'm not sure how we won.

Davis: 6- did what he had to do

Harding: 6- solid performance

Seabourne: 4- looked very shaky through the whole first half, terrible distribution. I would prefer Jaidi.

Fonte: 7- didn't do anything wrong, mopped up some sticky situations.

Richardson: 5- rusty, but will get better.

Puncheon: 6- By no means worse than anyone else, put himself about.

Schneiderlin: 4- Didn't get near the ball all game, completely out of sorts.

Hammond: 7- most creativity came through him, attempted to keep the ball on the deck when everyone else played hoofball

Lallana: 8- always a threat, class above most

Lambert: 5- although had a goal and assist to his name, seemed very slugish/ half hearted.

Barnard: 6- didnt see much of the ball, despite his efforts.

I agree the ref was a joke, Lee Barnard was getting pushed in the back every header in the 1st half, that is what lead to Rickie being booked as he kept complaining..

What is Kelvin doing when he has the ball at his feet ?? Nearly got caught out a couple of times and just before we got the penalty the forward tackled him and we were lucky it deflected wide.. GET RID OF THE BALL QUICKER !!

So we have 3 "porte bonheures" competing for superiority.

We shall test them come Tuesday evening then. Now it will be dark in Dubai so Eric will have to guess what the sky is doing, about

3pm in Columbus or Cleveland so Ohio will have to sneak out of his office for a "lucky smoke" and the new England Red Shirt will doubtlessly be worn under the Sash so we shall see.

Well well well.

I wore my lucky shirt tonight and we won 4-0.

Coincidence?

I think not
