Saints 3 Notts County 1 - Post Match Reaction

What is it about Saints, can't we ever do things the easy way? I do wonder whether our defenders are plain effing thick sometimes. They give away so many goals from simple set pieces - more than any other team I'll wager - and yet we never seem to be able to score from corners ourselves.

Meanwhile Brighton with no money and a team of players nobody's ever heard of sail majestically on their way. How embarrassing is that going to be if come season's end, Moneypots, got it all Saints only finish second to those penniless, nonentities from Sussex? If we had a really good manager we'd walk it surely, Brighton are proving it ain't that difficult to get out of this league?

It's still October. Brighton may continue their excellent run but, if you say they're penniless, they're probably not going to cope as well with injuries and suspensions as a better-resourced team. And I think we have a really good manager unless you can suggest somebody better who's likely to come here. But, anyway, I wouldn't really care if we finished 2nd to Brighton's (or anybody else's) first.

....they've got piles ?
It'd be slanderous of me to suggest that.

Certainly a bad case of sour grapes. Everyone dives, it's football. we get annoyed when it happens to us, it's nice for us to have to shoe on the other foot for a change.

Not many penniless teams have a £90 million stadium being constructed ready for the next season or buy Swindon's captain for £250k etc etc.

Not too much controversy here today.....

Good win on paper - however we are struggling for quite long periods in recent games.....

Two players in particular worry me - MS and JP. For me both have been quite a long way short of the quality needed for this team. JS is to be seen staring into space on many occasions. His speed of thought is just too slow for this team, his shooting is poor, his assists - has he had any? and his meaningful contribution is errrrr meaningless and no goals !!! Does he deserve to be playing in the same team as Adam Lallana? No, he doesn't, so stop wasting time and drop him - he will not make it - not ever...

MS .......Just doesn't make runs that hurt the opposition - 'Mr Safety'. Can be delicate and fancy but overall again doesn't contribute enough that is meaningful. These two cause us a headache......

So, 10 points off the top, 2 off second, 1 off the play offs.

This stage last season we were 22 points off top (Leeds were top with 33 points), 18 off 2nd (Charlton had 29) and 11 off the play offs (Bristol Rover had 22).

We're not playing to our potential and have had a huge amount of upheaval. I would imagine Lambert will start scoring more and, if needed, we will strengthen in January. This may sound egotistical, but the size of the clubs in L1 this season isn't the same as last season. Can I see Brighton doing a Leeds / Norwich? Nope.

Looking good from my perspective.

we have brighton and peterborough at home in the next few weeks..

yikes..!!!!!

At home !! We should be faves at home to those teams. Based on form of last 6 games, Brighton and Saints are 1st and 2nd with 1 point between them and then theres a big gap. All the other form teams didnt do great today - Bmuff, S wed, Br Rovers, Hartlepool, Posh etc

TBF i am pretty sure this is how MS is instructed to play so a bit harsh, he is a different player for France.

As for JP, i didn't see him today but from what i have seen at home it is a bit harsh the crap he gets.

Just got back, couldn't understand why Davis chased the referee up the pitch, but if you stop the video on 22secs, you can see Davis dumped on the ground by a County player.

(the away fans are now up the other end - this video was taken from the home end)

Just back from the game. First half we were dreadful, the distribution from the defence was dreadful and the midfield was getting overrun by the 5 men in the Notts midfield. We dropped very deep allowing Notts to get lots of men forward and putting us under pressure from set pieces. Second half we were better but did not look like scoring until the games turning point which was the penalty where we got a lucky break to get the ball to Lallana who played Barnard in who was scythed down for a stonewall penalty. Lambert was never going to miss and we were away, Notts being a man down meant there striker was left up on his own unable to hold the ball up and we put them under pressure. Barnard scored a nice finish from a corner and after that we kept the ball very well and saw out the game.

Davis - struggled to command his box(although the goal was a foul) with corners into his 6 yard box being left for panicky defenders, distribution was also poor and he nearly gave away a goal after dwelling on the ball too long, however he showed his fantastic shot stopping ability with a great reflex save in the second half.

Richardson- very very rusty and off the pace with a few poor crosses and he gave the ball away alot

Fonte- pure class, some towering headers when we were under pressure and some quality tackles,he also seemed to be organising the defence well so we caught them offside alot

Seabourne - very good in the air but looked clumsy when required to defend balls on the ground, his distribution improved rapidly after some abuse from the fans!!

Harding- solid but didn't provide much going forward unlike last season.

Puncheon- little of the ball and when he did get it did not too much with it and wasted some set pieces

Hammond - ponderous and did not get involved enough in the game

Schneiderlin - ineffective with surprisingly poor passing and was lightweight in the tackle

Lallana - brilliant on the ball, the only midfielder who played well, had the Notts defence panicking and deserved his goal

Lambert- off the pace, he wasn't even winning headers or holding the ball up as well as he does normally

Barnard- lively and works hard and did well to win the penalty and scored

Oxo- lively but didn't do a lot

Chaplow- helped us in the last 10 with his energy and helped us keep the ball

Bignall - looks talented, his pace gave us a useful outlet near the end of the match

Ref - hopeless, at times it was a lottery which way he would give a freekick.

Fans- superb, very loud and a wide variety of songs, did not shut up at any point including the half time match on the pitch, a real 12th man.

Very ordinary until we equalised, but after that we controlled the game. Enjoyed the way we ran the clock down at the end with loads of little flicks and quick passes in the corners.

We seemed a bit slow in midfield for the first hour, and gave the ball away too cheaply. There seemed to be little rhythm to our play and it was all a bit scrappy. Maybe that's what comes with playing against an Ince side although we should be good enough to cope with that and keep possession.

Spot on from where I stood!

First half we were poor and County probably deserved the lead, despite Kelvin being massively fouled. Ref didn't give us anything and our only real chance was Lambert hitting the post from a free kick.

Second half started very boring, little between the two sides. Barnard was then taken out in what, from where I was stood, was an absolute stonewall penalty/red card. Ricky pounded it in and it was all us from there on in.

Thought Lallana's goal was possibly deflected? Great show of support today in numbers and voice.

I think the table will start to spread out over the coming weeks and we have some important games coming up, but playing poorly and winning is what being promoted after such a long season is all about.

Disagree with some people's assesment of Hammond's performance, thought he was good today, much better than Schneiderlin and got forward well.

The ref was a farce for the whole game, but for anyone to dispute the penalty is a joke, typical post match reaction from Ince's rabble.

Didn't see the problem with their goal at the game, but looking at the pictures its a clear foul.

Chamberlein really needs to start on Tuesday, Puncheon was poor again today and needs a wake up call.

Back from the game half hour ago.

I would say we just shaded the game, but were actually reasonably poor. Sign of a good team though? We were very poor in the first half and not much better at the beginning of the second. The sending off and the penalty was a real turning point and I feel we would probably have lost or drawn the game had the penalty incident not occured. Fonte, Lallana and Barnard were our best three and our most stand out players today. Slightly dissapointed with the noise we made if I'm honest, but to take well over 2,000 up to Nottingham is a bloody good showing and I never expected we'd take as many as that. Good win and a good day.

After the sending off' date=' we had 75% of possession and also fannied about with it at the back for periods at the time as well. That will skew the stats.[/quote']

Enjoyed the first two minutes of injury time where we kept the ball in the corner with little flicks and tricks. County couldn't get near us and were getting so frustrated.

well done to all who went.woeful performance for the first and start of the second half but then the sending off and the pen totaly turned the game round in our favour and we looked comfortable.till then we didnt look like we would get anything from this game.well done to nigel adkins for the subs, changed things at the right time and chaplow made sure that they didnt run the midfield.not sure why were hoofing the ball to barnard when he has to be the smallest player on the pitch.something still missing from rickie.on this showing i feel today we will go up.its a sign of a good team when they play poorly but can nick a 3-1 win.have put two videos up on you tube, put in saints v notts county 30/10/10 wifm or

Really sh*t game I though, which swung on one incident packed minute. Three key factors which changed the game. The goal, the red card and Chaplow replacing Morgan. We looked clueless up until them and worryingly loose at the back. Still, another game where we've played sh*t and got a result. Hopefully a sign of things to come. If we can stay in contention until January, then hopefully NA can bring in a couple of players and we can get back on top of Brighton. Not literally, I know they're a bit like that. As has already been alluded to, the ref was retarded. Chant of the day? "Ole ole ole ole Guuuuly Guuuuly! ole ol... oh s**t it's actually Bignall!"

Davis - 5 - Distribution very poor and looked a bit shakey. Almost gifted them a 2nd at 1-0, when he dithered on a back-pass and ended up getting tackled (in a very similar vein to that one against QPR a few years back).

Richardson - 5 - Looks rusty as you'd probably expect.

Fonte - 7 - How does the song go? Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right and here I am stuck in the middle with Dan Seaborne.

Seaborne - 6 - A bit old school, hoofy Seaborne today.

Harding - 6 - Had a tough first half against a pretty goof player (their #11)

Puncheon - 5 - Ineffective. Missed a sitter in the 2nd half.

Schneiderlin - 5 - Ineffective and looked a bit lightweight

Hammond - 6 - Not his best performance. Never really got hold of the game

Lallana - 7 - Easily our best midfielder, not as if that's much of an achievement. Quality goal at the end, worth the ticket on its own.

Lambert - 5 How does such a bit lad get beaten in the air so easily? A shaddow of last year. Good pen tho.

Barnard - 6 Worked hard, but County got away with kicking the crap out of him first half. Pushed their luck too far with a combine harvester of a tackle in the penalty area. Stone wall penalty.

Subs:

AOC - 6 - A couple of lively runs but didn't do all that much.

Chaplow - 7 - Added some much needed grit to the midfield.

Bignall - 6 - Didn't see much, but seems to have some good pace.

I cannot believe we won last night! I went to bed at 1-0 and figured that we weren't going to recover from new manager syndrome and slump to defeat. However its great to be proved wrong and I was stunned at the final scoreline!!! Great job Saints, that's exactly what we need to be doing if we want to get promoted and catch Brighton!
