Want to get a cheap week away in the sun in the next few weeks. Looking at the Canary Islands with the family so not up for joining the drunken masses but also don't want to be in the middle of nowhere. 2 late 30's and a 3 yr old.

Whats good and whats not my Alan Whickers, thought about Cyprus also???

I am going to Gran Canaria at the end of November for seven days, but I'm not expecting loads of sun as it is often overcast at that time of year. However it will be mid 20s Celsius which will do enough to prepare me for a Manchester winter!

Los Gigantes in Tenerife. Up the coast from the rabble.

I love the island of Tenerife because of the micro climate and vegetation due to the geography. You can go from hot sun to snow in an hours drive, from arid moonscapes to lush vegetation. It's a perfect holiday destination if you love nature. Also the people are civilised and hygienic and the roads are good and the food in rural restaurants is really good.

I would recomend Los Gigantes also as it's an amazing place next to the highest sea cliffs in europe and close to the teno mountains and the ribben road to masca, but personally the next time i go i'll be staying in puerto de la cruz for a change. A really nice resort with plenty to do and with a great casino. That said Los Giganates is the hottet and sunniest place on the Island so is the best bet for Nov.

It beats mucky places like Turkey and Egypt by a country mile.

Would agree with all of the above, Mrs Toomer and I have been out there in November, temperature very nice during the day just had to put a light weight jumper on when we went out in the evening.

Tenerife. Great place. Apart from the darned Timeshare sharks. Rent a car, drive around the Island and through the Volcano on your own with a picnic rather than on a big tour bus

One point worth checking is the latest Exchange rates. Euro countries vs Dollar based countries can swing around like crazy at the moment in terms of prices when you arrive.

For gauranteed sun then you need to come this direction, but prices are just nuts these days.

Somewhere completely off the wall though and away from the crowds? Don't leave it TOO late as it does get cold later is Syria.

Some time on the beach at Lattakia and some time at the historical sites like Palmyra, Alleppo & Homs. Not a riot, but great food and wine and beer and restaurants and also once there cheap. Have recommended it to many friends who have all loved it

Hiring a car is cheaper in tenerife than anywhere else. I always use holiday auto's who in turn use Record Spain. Record Spain are no longer based at Tenerife Sur airport - you find the woman at the airport who puts you on a minibus to the car depot which is about 10 minutes away. One English couple were moaning about this, but personally i thought it was better because when you get in a different car with the steering wheel on the wrong side i think it's easier to join the motorway from a simple road rather than having to navigate out of the airport, likewise it's easier for drop off.

Had a reccommendation of Tunisia, anyone been??

Hotel is near Susah.

I went to Tunisia in 06 with the incumbent and her family, not great to be honest. Stayed in a place call Port El Kantaoui which is kind of man made marina, a much better version of Port Solent if you will, i think it is trying to be like the Tunisian Marbella (we dont know this when we went) Its okay as place but i wouldn't go back. The hotel was supposedly one of the best ones in the resort but was full of northerners, of particular annoyance was a bloke who had spent his career as a magician in Blackpool and talked about it non stop and thought he was still on stage doing card tricks everynight. Two families of northern chavs, looked like parents with their daughters and grandchildren, the daughters were about 30 years old, overweight with kids, two of them sha**ed a couple of young Tunisians from the entertainment team. Most annoying was a couple from hull in their 40's with an older couple in their 60's. The classic Brits abroad on an all inclusive drink as much as you can all day everyday "because its all free" The 40's couple wore tracksuits and a heavy gold chain and the 60's guy was so p*ssed one afternoon he had to be put to bed by the waiters in the hotel. It was funny watching it but not really my sort of place.

Dont think you can go far wrong with the Canaries though, Egypt is quite reasonable, Agadir in Morrocco is not bad went there three years ago and off to Marrekech on saturday for a week. Cape Verde is good for winter sun too and Gambia is reasonable, 2 weeks BB for £500 each.

I've just come back from a break in Antigua which worked out cheaper than you'd think.

Flights were less than £400 each and a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom villa with all mod cons including aircon, patio, deck and mooring 200m from the beach was £500 for week.

Temp' around the 30c mark.

That is bloody good, who did you book that through?

Guess you'd get that sort of scenario in many places but Canaries is looking like a good bet. At least we can get away from any potential undesirables by getting a car and heading off into island every day.

Eilat in November is very nice.

Temperatures coming down from the summer maximums in the 100s, and now around the mid to high 80s.

People tend to avoid or not think about Israel for holidays, but believe me, it's a great place.

Eilat has some amazing, Vegas-style resort hotels (the King Solomon, The Dan, etc) and you can also get away for some great day trips (Negev desert, Sinai Desert in Egypt, and even Petra in Jordan).

People will quite happily go to Sharm-El Sheikh in Egypt on the Red Sea, but that's a bit of a poo-hole. Eilat is much nicer, cleaner, civilsed, European. People somehow think they will suffer trouble in Israel but it's more likely in Egypt, where armed guards have to protect resorts like Sharm from Islamic extremists.
