Why do IT companies make life so difficult?

I have just bought an iphone 4 asw I thought it was about time I got with the 21st century. Now I have an old version of itune on the PC at home and the phone wants to be connected to it before it will work. WTF in the old days all had to do was to charge it and stick the sim in.

plugged phone in and it wasn't recognised. After a bit of rooting around on the forums I found out that I needed the most upto date version of itunes - fair enough I thought. This is where life became really diffiicult.

The latest version of itunes point blank refuses to install correctly. It merrily deleted the old version and will not work. After four hour of installing and reinstalling i have to revert to an old version of itunes - and guess what I cannot activate my new phone.

Apple have been completely useless - the most helpful comment was "have you considered upgrading your pc". B*stards. I knew the iphone was pricy but I didn't expect to have to pony up for a new computer to run it on.

Now I am faced with a pretty collosal argument to try and get the phone replaced with something more end user friendly. It is sh1te like this that will eventually do for apple. There arrogance towards customers is quite breathtaking. :x:x

Deep breath: I feel slightly better after getting that off my chest

What spec is your pc? What OS are you running?

Only asking this as there may be a work around.

The Windows hw and sw specs needed for iTunes 11.

Windows hardware

  • A PC with a 1 GHz Intel or AMD processor
  • Intel Pentium D or faster processor is required to play Standard Definition video from the iTunes Store
  • 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor is required to play HD video, an iTunes LP, or iTunes Extras from the iTunes Store
  • 512MB of RAM; 1GB is required to play HD video, an iTunes LP, or iTunes Extras
  • Screen resolution of 1024x768 or greater; 1280x800 or greater is required to play an iTunes LP or iTunes Extras
  • DirectX 9.0-compatible video card with 32MB of video RAM; 64MB recommended
  • QuickTime-compatible audio card
  • Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store
  • iTunes-compatible CD or DVD recorder to create audio CDs, MP3 CDs, or back-up CDs or DVDs

Windows software

  • Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, 32-bit editions of Windows Vista, or 32-bit editions of Windows 7
  • 64-bit editions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 require the iTunes 64-bit installer
  • QuickTime 7.6.6 or later is required (included)
  • 200MB of available disk space
  • Screen reader support requires Window-Eyes 7.1.1 or later.

Seriously, if your PC doesnt meet the minimum needed there (Windows XP SP2, 1GHz proc and 512MB RAM) then you really should have thought about it before buying a powerful smartphone.

Cant you just find someone else who has the latest version of iTunes and activate that way? And in the mean time, wipe and reload your P.C and then try the latest version of iTunes. Apple can't account for someone having a P.C that won't allow software to install, that isn't up to them

It's not always the Company that is wrong, and on this occasion it seems like 'typical end user syndrome' to me

I had trouble with Itunes 9 on my office machine. Worked ok at home but when I updated to Itunes 9 the program just refused to run. The previous version worked fine (as fine as it ever could be) so I had to uninstall and revert whcih was not easy as there are load of 'hidden' files to get rid of.

Isn't the latest version Itunes 10?

The PC is upto spec although it is XP - have now activated at work so at least I am off and running.

And now is won't connect to the mail exchange...

Now I am not computer illiterate but I sometimes feel that you need a degree in computer science to acheive anything. Our It dept isas flumoxed as I am as to why it won't sync up - happy days. On the up side I have a good reason to give to the missus as to why we need a new state of the art pc

If you purchase an iPhone from the Apple Store they will activate it for you in store so that's it's ready to use. Perhaps try taking it in there and asking politely if they'll do it for you anyway?

Unfortunately, you can't expect Apple to refund your phone just because you can't get iTunes to work as there's nothing wrong with the phone itself.

Face it - its your computer - nothing to do with Apple, IT Support, Bill Gates, Windows XP etc.

You've probably looked at too much porn and now it's clogged up with viruses and registry errors.

This is exactly my point. IT companies should expect that a large percentage of there customers will want to look at porn and should adapt their products so it is completely compati8ble with said porn or the viruses it leaves behind.
