I'm thinking of doing of abit of traveling, Oz, New Zealand, South America etc. Anyone know if I'll need a visa to visit and also if I'm likely to get one with a criminal record???? Went to Canada a few years ago and spent four hours in Immigration before they eventually let me thru.

Any tips on travelling would be appreciated, thinking of doing a year maybe more depending on funds etc.

Dont mention criminal convictions! They have no way of checking UK records and the only way they will know is if you tell them. If just creates a lot of hassle and will possibly see you being refused a visa.

That's what I always thought but the authorities in Canada seemed to know all about me. Nothing major, just football related stuff etc.

I had the same problem at Munich airport en-route to Portugal for Euro2004. They said they had phoned their colleagues in the UK though, maybe they tried to double-bluff me, either way, they made themselves look ****s as I don't have a criminal record anyway.

Make sure you have at least 6 months validity on your passport after your last date abroad. The US can be touchy about criminal convictions. They do not ever regard these as 'spent'. http://london.usembassy.gov/b2.html For Australia I believe they are no longer compulsory. ;)

This! KS, a mutual friend of ours has just had his Visa application fro Oz turned down, right pain in the a*** as he leaves for 6 months travelling at the end of Nov. Considering either staying on NZ longer or getting in on a banana boat from SE Asia now! Apparantly he was too honest, should have just kept it quiet and he would have been allowed in.

You shouldn't need a visa for any of the countries you've mentioned, athough you have to apply for an e-visitor thing for Australia. Very simple and takes 24 hours or so to come through. Went to Chile, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay and Brazil last year and they all just stamp you in and out for 90 days.

I have travelled to Australia on a criminal record for football & other criminal records, no problem, their main issue was my passport stamps containing Istanbul & Bangkok on many journeys which cost me 3 hours interigaton.
